    Really!!!! or YASD

So yesterday, tired of scumming for arrows of holy might I took on the big M. I had 30 seeker arrows of holy might. Not nearly enough to take M down, but enough to bring me close. So I'm playing really well since I'm Healing and not really letting M get in close combat for the most part. But I soon run out of Holy might and have to take him on hand to hand....again I'm doing okay with him phasing away and healing often. Until he summons dragons. Instead of using my scroll of mass banishment I use my staff of banishment. It works. Sadly I blank out on what letter dragons are since I have a hard time playing ASCII style. So I lose my turn M mana storms, a dragon breathes desechantment and I am him as I franticly press q so that I can quaff a potion of life.

Pretty f*4Ked IMO. I would have expected that you would have a choice of what to banish rather than having to know what to banish. Of course if I had been more relaxed I could have looked at the monster spoilers....

SO after the big tombstone I loaded up my save scum file and sure enough M bite the dust. But I don't have my clean win...yet. I made a new character and took out Farmer Maggots dogs with ease...which never would have happened before. Got to fourth lvl in ten minutes. But I want to play a newer version of Angband so I might start a new character in 3.1.2

Honestly though I feel that my characters death was a bit unfair. Preventable...yes, but still unfair since I would have had to leave the game and go online for the spoiler files. I'll have my clean win yet!

PS: use either the scroll or ?Phase at that point -- Staff of Banishment has a pretty high fail rate. With a well destroyed area, you should be able to phase out of range of at least most of the summoned monsters.

It didn't actually fail....It asked me what symbol to banish and I tried using the look feature. Which canceled the spell and lost me my turn. But that is a good point...a failure can kill you.

That really sucks. I feel your pain.

        I still occasionally press '*' for a list. I don't know why.

If you pressed 'l' key it wasn't canceled. You have banished poor giant louses.

P.S. That's pretty bad, dying in the final fight because of stupid emotional mistake. Good luck for you next time! And I'd say, definitely start new char in the newest V version.

Yeah, fighting M is not the time to try something new....Oh well.

Can we add something to banish?

Choose which monster race you wish to banish: l
Are you sure you want to banish 'l'? (y/N) n
Choose which monster race you wish to banish: D
Are you sure you want to banish 'D'? (y/N) y
              *poof*

This would be a nice addition, especially since you banish so rarely that it wouldn't be tedious.

See, that would have saved me...But its a learning experience I guess.

                    Even better:

"Are you sure you want to banish 'l' (Louse)?"
"Are you sure you want to banish 'D' (Ancient Dragon/Wyrm)?"

We already have a mapping of letters to descriptive monster groups (in cmd3.c), which you get when using the '/' command. No sense not using it here.

While normally I'm all for streamlining, I pretty much always inscribe stuff like *destruction*, teleport, healing with !*. Anything that is dangerous that I wouldn't be able to cancel, so I guess I wouldn't mind banishment also getting the extra keystroke.

The first time I played, I used tiles. I've found that the ASCII symbols are much more enjoyable since then. And things like trappers and lurkers actually work.
