Possibly the most embarrassing preventable death in history

After a long hiatus, I recently started Morgoth-hunting again. Today I dove quickly to 550', found a nice Whip(+3,+7) and was about ready to recall, when I saw a pair of gauntlets on the floor. Since my inventory was completely full, I decided to short-circuit the pseudo-ID process and equipped it straight from the floor to replace my shop-bought gauntlets. Much to my surprise, pseudo-ID came back after one turn.

    Camlost.

Before today, I do not recall ever committing suicide before killing Morgoth. Well, now I do!

PS Why do we never find a single glove or boot in Angband? In the dungeon where I live, Dirty Sock[+0] is found on the floor all the time, but Pairs of Clean Socks[+1] only exist in the vault. Is it because Morgy is really fastidious or something?

Which version? In current versions, only sticky curses are on the one ring and Morgoth's crown.

Good question. For some reason, the self-compiled Mac binary I'm using doesn't have a version number built in! The copyright notice says 2016, so I believe it's 4.0.5. I know this is a very old version by now, but I've never managed to kill Morgoth in this version, and wanted to score a winner under these rules before migrating.

I don't know about the latest version, but in older versions Camlost's curse was not sticky: although ?Remove Curse does not exist in this version (I believe), the curse can be dispelled by repeatedly enchanting it with ?Enchant Armour. The problem with my character was that it was too early in the game, and Camlost's penalty too big, for him to be able to scum for ?EA in the dungeon or the black market. It was much faster to just die and start over.

You are confusing sticky with permanent. Sticky means you cannot unwield the item.

In the current versions, you can unwield any cursed item without bothering to remove curse, with only the 2 exceptions. There is no pseudo. You are expected to wield items off the floor.
