    Really? Cursed.

    A Pair of Leather Sandals of Annoyance [1, -6] (-8) {cursed}
dropped by a Green naga at 350 feet (level 7)

    Cursed.
    -8 stealth, speed.
    Aggravates creatures nearby.

Thanks identify by use! Luckily a pack of novice mages made sure this ironman character wouldn't suffer long.

It looks as if the novice mage has a new strategy.

    1. Charm hapless naga.
    2. Give naga cursed boots.
    3. Wait.
    4. Have rarely occurring victory celebration.

Much better than their old strategy

    1. Cast easily resistible spell (x3).
    2. Charge into melee.
    3. Run away.
    4. Die.

Off-topic, but why don't these novice mages carry a bow? That's standard equipment isn't it?

Yeah, but cursed egos are incredibly rare now. Even if it did kill you, it's just a fraction of all games--not much more risk than dying to an acid trap on dl 1 was in earlier versions.

I strongly recommend that you make it a top priority to play priest or paladin with PB2, or else buy ?rCurse, when playing ironman.

Not to mention, an early short-distance teleport spell (portal) improves survivability by a large amount.

High-Elf Paladin is a pretty effective combo for ironman. (Adequate WIS and stealth, great other stats and abilities)

I won on my very first attempt at a dwarf priest ironman. That was the suggested race/class combo. It seemed pretty strong, and built for ironman.

I didn't use alter reality, but if you have no qualms about abusing it, alter reality makes the endgame a joke.

You might as well use teleport level unless you are abusing ironman. Someone needs to do a feature request to remove the alter reality spell. I do too many. How about it? Anyone?

I don't like removing things, but I would happily open a feature request to nerf it in some way (e.g. with a 500-turn time delay). Would that be acceptable?

No. It serves *only* for abuse in ironman. No one should ever use it for any other reason. The only fix is to remove it.

Nope, don't agree with that. It's also a pretty decent escape spell in an emergency. Better than *destruction* if there aren't any artifacts on the floor.

How is it better than destruction?

Destruction makes a bloody mess of the level and wakes everything up for miles. Alter reality makes you a nice clean new level, full of new treasure and largely sleeping monsters.

As far as escaping goes, I still prefer destruction. After a destruction you have at least 4-5 turns, often as much as 20 (depending on speed and passwall monsters) to heal or recall. ?destruction is a failsafe way to survive when you are in a really bad place and need a couple turns to quaff !CCW or stall for recall.

It seems though that you agree with Eddie in that Alter Reality works just like Teleport level. The 1 level difference doesn't seem to matter much.

I think Eddie's point is that Alter Reality == Teleport Level except it breaks Ironman because it doesn't move you down a level, which seems sloppy and unnecessary. Since Teleport Level already exists, what is the point of Alter Reality, if not to exploit Ironman mode? You could just give priests TL instead.
