I lost a lv35 Dwarven Paladin with some pretty decent equipment a couple days ago. Pure stupidity - I was in my first ever greater vault, about 2/3 cleared, hadn't even cracked the rooms with the big uniques and I wasn't certainl I wanted to. I found out afterwards he'd got Ungoliant in his monster memory at some point and I was only at 2000' I meleed two Ancient White Ds with no problem and decided I didn't need to back off before meleeing the ethereal dragon behind them. Turns out I was wrong; it took my guy down in one turn.
I was pretty pissed because he was the highest level character I'd ever lost (I have one winner, High-Elf Ranger; otherwise I tend to lose them before clv15 if at all) and he'd just picked up all the stuff he needed to go down to 3500'. Lol I had so much stuff that would've saved him, just a phase door would've done.
Anyway I went straight in and rolled up another one on the same save, played a bit more recklessly than usual (I am the player who runs away from everything and won't even think of going past a depth without the recommended resistance, so I was quite proud of myself for venturing below 1000' without See Invisible). Down on dlv17 he hacked his way through a bunch of Novice Paladins, business as usual, and one of them dropped a pair of {excellent} boots.
Of speed.
+9.
And breaking news: he's just this minute got a Blessed Short Sword with ESP from the weapons shop, and Amras from a Spectre at 1700', which puts him at a tidy +10 innate speed, 3 blows and 2 shots per turn. My High-Elf Ranger winner only has +12 innate speed XD I don't have See Invisible if I equip it (I was using a Westernesse Katana), but I guess ESP can cover that..?
I'm still paranoid about going below 2000' though. He doesn't have poison resistance and drolems as far as I know AREN'T detected by ESP. I do have a couple of rods of detection, but unlike Qs drolems can move... I really don't wanna lose this guy right now XD What's the safest way to get poison resistance - hang around 1900' and hope for an artifact?
Oh yeah and idiot question. I'm using 3.1.0 beta but I downloaded it quite a while back. Do I have the perma-curse issue on my version, and if so has it been patched/can I fix it? I tend not to wear stuff without IDing anyway but I have butterfingers sometimes and I'd really hate to put Gorlim on by accident.
[As a general note to the maintainer: Thanks for the superb work, I love 3.1.0! I was going to go on with my High-Elf Ranger as well, and hunt for some of the rarer artifacts, but after having been exposed to 3.1.0. I can't stand 3.0.6 any more XD I didn't even know some of the interface stuff was annoying until it was fixed]
