YACD from my modified version of Angband

Two of Spades, the Kobold Knight
First I'll explain the knight class: It's pretty much a warrior with a few prayers (good with remove curse and turn undead, very bad with teleporting prayers (learns portal at clvl27), can't learn orb of draining and cure mortal wounds is his only healing prayer.). He's almost as good a fighter as the warrior, but his skills aren't as good and he's the only class with +0 stealth. He can wear heavier armor than the paladin and still not be hindered by it in his prayers.

I was quite lucky to find a +10 boots of speed around L20. Here, I must mention that the only changes I made to the object.txt and ego_item.txt files were the changes for my late (~L45) see invisible idea, and a new weapon and two new armors (none of them major), I swear I didn't make speed boots more common than they were originally. BTW, with the late see invisible idea, defender weapons give infravision instead of see invisible. I am playing with auto-scum for good levels turned on, which I think I'll do more often now..

Seems to me like I should get more than 1 attack with Narthanc, but I don't (even without my Dex lowered). So I'll stick with the Rapier of Frost.

After finding the boots, I cleared a vault on L21 with a ranger who kept summoning animals including acid hounds (I changed their name because it doesn't make sense to me for water hounds to breathe acid). Other than that there wan't much tough monsters in the vault. In the vault I found the ring of sustain strength (dropped by a novice rogue), the cloak of protection, the boots of free action, and of course a few other things that sold well but weren't worth keeping. Among them was a small sword of acid, which was tempting to keep, but I figured some of the monsters who are immune to acid are some I would want to kill the fastest (acid hounds, ochre jellies, etc), so I decided to sell it.

hmm.. I redid the monster.txt file (up to about L29 -I'm still working on it), but the only monsters who happened to come up in my post are monsters who were already in the game. oh well, I'll post more dumps. Once I finish redoing the monster.txt file, I'll make the modified edit folder available for download.
Oh yeah, you'll notice the "odd rod", well I did some silly things to the flavors.txt file just for kicks. (I'll probably use the original flavors.txt when I make my modifications available to the public.)

I now have the monster.txt redone up to the L32 monsters, so I can play a little further with my knight. I didn't actually dive any deeper because I found a vault with good stuff to take back, and I forgot to buy food (or satisfy hunger scrolls) for the dive (knights don't get that prayer either). Then I went back to the dungeon, and realized I had forgotten to buy food Again. So it was a very short two dives, but I found a lot of nice stuff in that short time. I think I'll play with auto-scum turned on more often.
One thing I changed it that hounds do sleep sometimes instead of having 0 alertness which always makes them wakes up immedietly when you come in their range of vision. They still wake up easily, but if you have high stealth you can sneak up on them. I did mention that knights have 0 stealth, but kobolds are one of the races with the highest stealth, and I was wearing a leather scale mail of elvenkind before finding the dwarven armor I'm wearing now. Kobold knight surprisingly makes a good combination, the kobold's stealth makes up for the knight's lack thereof.
I don't know how many people buy stat potions from the black market instead of waiting to find them in the dungeon, but it let me get another attack with my rapier of frost. Careth Asdriag gives an extra attack but is a little heavier so I get the same amount of attacks with it as with the rapier so I only use Careth Asdriag for monsters who are immune to cold.

Oh yeah, there's another thing I forgot to mention:
On the dive when I killed Angamaite, I was clearing out a band of forest trolls, when I saw "the young multi-hued dragon breates acid". I didn't see a multi-hued dragon anywhere, but it was right next to me in the tunnel. Not only was it out of depth, but I couldn't see it. I had forgotten to give it a the line in the .txt file to assign a symbol to it, so it appeared like a dark spot in the tunnel. While I was realizing this, the young multi-hued dragon was decimating my hps, so I teleported away and recalled back because I was almost dead. I also saved the game, and fixed the symbol for that dragon before playing any more. (I'll make sure there's none of that kind of mistake before I put my edit folder up for download)
(So there was actually three dives between dumps, two where I forgot to bring food, and one where the young multi-hued dragon chased me down.)

I think its probably safe to dump this character to the Angband ladder, provided you clearly indicate that you've changed the edit files.

          Admin hat on.

I would prefer people not posting dumps of modded games on the ladder. That said, I will not delete them on spot either, unless the mod makes the game considerably easier (cheating). We had such incidents in TomeNET section already...

Update on Two of Spades the Kobold Knight and my monster testing:
I made a couple monsters easier, a some monsters harder, but I think overall I made the monsters slightly harder in general. So I'm wondering why
the game seems easier than usual. I can think of two probable reasons: I'm not diving fast enough (I can't really dive fast until I finish putting all the monsters in- right now I have it done up to L42), and because of the luck I've had with equipment with the telepathy and speed boots, etc. (maybe I should quit wearing the speed boots so I can test the monsters I put in better.) Oh and the amulet of sustenance helps too- I haven't had to bother with potions of restore life levels yet.
Other things I'm wondering about the monsters: Why am I still getting so many low-level monsters at L35-36 in the dungeon? Is it because there are more of them?, but shouldn't it usually pick monsters close to the current dungeon level anyway? Also, why do so many monsters seem to always miss me? I just killed The Skeezix, a 690hp unique minor demon native to L31, and it only got maybe one hit on me and lots of misses. Is it probably just my armor class or is it something else?
I'm also wondering if these same things happened when I got this far in the original version and I'm just noticing it more now because I'm thinking about testing the monsters while I play. With the original set of monsters, I wouldn't care if I seem to kill so many of them real easily or get a lot of low level monsters, but when it's my set of monsters, I want to make sure they are as tough as I meant them to be when I put them in the monster.txt file.

the game seems easier than usual.
I suspect it's a combination of things. The early speed is probably the biggest. That first +10 bump is huge- along with all its other advantages it basically doubles your damage output, and you're getting that without even having to give up a ring slot for it. BoS +10 is one of the nicest things you can find in the game- think of it this way, they are Boots of Extra Attacks (+4), with a lot of other benefits (like always getting the jump on normal speed creatures, and having a big advantage in choosing your positioning), given your current # of blows. ESP is also very nice, giving real-time feedback on what's happening around you. Add to that how slowly you're going and I wouldn't expect you to be having any difficulties right now. So unless you normally have +10 speed/ESP/475 hp/several fairly nice artifacts/every really important resist in the game at 1800', that explains a lot of it.

There are a couple of other things though. This Knight class sounds pretty nice- basically a warrior with bad stealth but priest spells (the skills are not hugely important, but- looking at your dump they don't look poor to me). OK, they don't get OOD, but with warrior melee they don't need it. I'd be interested to see what spells they do get, and at what levels and fail rates- if they get the detection stuff, that's pretty big by itself (remove curse is not important if you have warrior pseudo-id). A warrior's biggest problem is that they can't do anything except fight without the assistance of devices, and since devices tend to be single-purpose, that means a serious hit on inventory space. Also, a lot of the nicer spell effects aren't duplicated by devices until fairly late (if at all)- I'm always really happy to get my first Rod of Detection as a warrior, for instance.

I also think you may be underestimating the impact of having hounds start asleep. From the time you start hitting clear hounds right up to the end of the game hounds are omnipresent in Angband. If they were considered a single monster they would be by far the nastiest thing in the game. Part of the reason for that is that if you so much as take a step into their detection range they will start coming for you, and they can be hard to shake. In fact, there is only one monster at your current depth that should be dangerous to your character (in V, that is) and it is a hound...

Even in a Vault at 4000' a lot of the space will usually be filled by orcs and trolls, etc. The game would be pretty tough otherwise... imagine hitting Black Reaver depth and finding that almost every monster was a Black Reaver or a deep unique. It would certainly make diving impossible. I often play at depths where there are monsters who could instakill me. But killing a Forest Troll at 3500' has a much better chance of creating a nice drop than killing him at depth.

Could be. Your AC is pretty high for 1800'. Btw, you really haven't found anything better than that Ring of Protection? Damage, Con, whatever attribute you need to get more blows (do Knights use the warrior blows table?), even Accuracy would be better, IMHO.

Knights do not get call light, find traps, or detect doors & stairs. They don't get satisfy hunger or orb of draining, and as I mentioned before their only healing spell is cure mortal wounds. Besides those, I think they get the rest of the prayers in the first three books.
They get lower disarming, magic devices, and saving throw than any other class. They have the same max attacks as the warrior and same fighting multiplier, but have the same minweapon weight for calculating # of attacks as a priest and ranger (don't know exactly what this number does, but I gather that the higher the number the harder is it to get more attacks.).
As for testing monsters I'll just have to finish putting all the monsters in and start a new game where I can dive a bit faster. For the current game.. I seem to be doing mighty well. I'd seem a little weird if my first win came from the first game I played with my new monster set, and have that not be the reason that I won.

It's probably good that they don't get those two detects, it would make the first book a lot more useful than a warrior deserves, IMHO. Do they get prayers from books past the first 3? And what levels/fail values do they have? Rogues, for instance, have pretty good combat and att bonuses (though not as good as your Knight) and a fair number of mage spells, but they get most of the spells much later than a Ranger does. Of course, they have excellent stealth- try a kobold rogue sometime... it takes a bit of skill, but it's one of the better non-munchkin race/class combos. Kobolds and rogues are both underrated so the impressiveness/ease ratio is good .

Disarming is not, IMHO, all that significant (searching either). Save and device can be quite important. The importance increases as you go higher on the scale (i.e. being able to get a perfect save is really big, just as the difference between 5% and 0% failure on critical spells is much bigger then even the "20% difference" between 60% fail and 40% fail). In the early game magic device is important mostly for _tele and -teleother. But a good general rule is that making a class worse at something it is only mediocre at hurts it less than making it worse at something it is good at.

IIRC (and I may not), any weapon below the minweapon weight is treated as if it were of the minweapon weight, for the purpose of calculating blows. This basically means that only warriors can get 4 blows to start, even if another class has identical combat stats, but they have to use a very light weapon. I'm a little confused here, because I would think that you would get 5 blows with Orcrist as a warrior with your stats, but minweapon shouldn't affect a weapon that heavy. I think I am probably just getting senile though- that, or too lazy to calculate it. At any rate, you only need a small nudge to increase blows.

It would be a bit unfortunate, actually. I do think that your Knight class sounds a bit unbalanced, but not ridiculously so (depending on some particulars). Mainly, you had some very good luck in finding those BoS, and you have hung out long enough in the 30s to find some very nice stuff (hang out long enough at that depth and you can find quite a bit of a minimal winner's kit- I think the first time I found Ringil was only around 2100', but IIRC Ringil is the only top tier artifact that comes into depth at 1000'). But it would be sad to have to say "I've won, but only in a version I modified." No matter how legitimate the win, that hound doesn't quite hunt.

Fortunately for you a) the win is still a ways off, and if you've never won before there are still going to be lots of opportunities to off yourself, and b) even if you do win, having done so once makes it a lot easier to do it again, so you should soon be able to say "I've won, once in a version I modified, but also in V."

EDIT: and btw, if you want to win, get a better ring than Protection. +20 is a ridiculously nice one, but your AC is already high enough. I won't go so far as to say that AC is unimportant in Angband, but it is almost never a priority.

I also think that the amount of attention you are paying to the game by testing it (things like actually watching the messages, watching what getws generated, etc.) may be helping you out. The trend in Angband has been to make the game easier with every release. All you have to do to win reliably is pay attention, _all_ the time.
