Last night I killed Saruman at 3600'. I cast Mass Identify, to find:

Cesti of Fingolfin
Shield of Deflection of Gil-Galad
Plate Armor of Isildur
'Glondricam'
'Mundwine'

Literally my very next turn;

You find a trap! You fall through a trap door! You float gently down to the next level.

Thank god for Preserve Mode, at least.

That is news to me -- somehow I though artifacts could be generated again unless they had been sold or were in your inventory/home.

Glad it wasn't Thorin/Ringil/Narya then!

I've been burned in this situation before as well. I get in the habit of *always* casting detect traps after killing any high-level humanoid unique.

Yep, I'm always so eager to, slay the evil and get to the goods that I often forget to detect traps in valuts, WHERE I KNOW THERE ARE ALMOST ALWAYS TRAPS.

it could be worse-possibly. You could step on a summoning trap after killing a high level unique, and summon time hounds...

I've never had even a mid range guy who lacked levitation...but I pretty much only play Hengband, perhaps it is more common in that varient.

I may be wrong (its been a few years since I played V), but I don't think you get levitation in Angband.

Only Slow Fall, which's only use is not taking damage from pit-type traps afaik.

Wow... that does suck pretty bad... I would promptly just run to my bathroom with a straightblade. =P

But of course if it had been Ringil I wouldn't have come back out either... lol. ^_^;;;
