i would have kept those uniques alive at least until DL25, but likely deeper.
I can see why you'd want teh activation of the dragon mail, but with the crossbow you'd probably do better using the Dwarven mail.
is WIS your casting stat now? Because .... "nature" ?

I'm not wearing both rings of escaping right now but I had been up until just now. I just found boots of speed <+5> and the good ring of the mouse I bought from the store makes it seem worth it to swap out the second +3 speed escaping (I tweaked the 4.2.5 slightly, so that rings of the mouse show up in the magic shop, and rings of escaping have a range of +2 to +4 speed, among other small changes).

With a ranger or caster, I take bad mouse rings over escaping +2 any day. Even when escaping was +4 I rarely used it, instead preferring mouse or nothing (if I have something like a *thanc, I wont use escaping early on and on dlvl 35 Ill have better options).

Anyway, If you should ever use +2 escaping do post a dump.

i dont think +4 Spd is enough. Thats with 2 rings obviously. If you are a mage, this is still your best bet until you have rings of INT, because 2x ring +3 INT is better.
Rangers are the ones who profit the most from the old Escaping. Your to-hit is pretty much the same and +8 Spd from 2 rings is a massive increase, find any decent Longbow you can enchant to +8 or so and you are well enough to stay on DL35 until your stats are all over 18/50.
For mages, the situation is similar, your casting fail rate increases, but since you will be using almost exclusively Magic Missile, it doesnt really matter.
The real advantage is that Escaping *STOPS* you from accidentally meleeing mobs. You can play faster and dont have to worry about running into a mob you had no intention of attacking.

obviously it's all on a case-by-case basis. Depending on what early randarts you find, Escaping is still a viable option, even at +2.

Not I. +2 speed does not compete with rFire+rCold, or ring of mouse, etc.

High Elf Paladin ... "just trust me bro".

Despite me being 100% convinced i had used the "overwrite file?" - i actually didn't.

    5/5/5/5 starting stats.
Found a dagger of slay orc with ESP on DL2, then went again the route of the launcher + 2x Escaping. Sure escaping cripples your already meager casting early on, just carry more ammo, mmk? short bow of +1 extra shots, then stat gain until WIS 18/100.
Made it to DL98 with STR 18 !!, i was CL45 before i saw STR maxed.

found 2 Dragon Armors, so it was kinda like this:

    MoD 5d8 +15, +2 WIS

    the Light Crossbow of Sirethron (x5) (+8,+22) <+2, +1>
    ------------------------------------------------------
    +2 dexterity.
    +2 shooting power.
    +1 light.
    Provides resistance to lightning, poison.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
    Grants telepathy. Prevents paralysis.
    *for ESP*

    a RoS +12

the White Dragon Scale Mail 'Alath' (-2) [14,+40] <+4, +3>
    ----------------------------------------------------------
    +4 strength.
    +3 intelligence.
    +3 constitution.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, cold, poison, light, dark, sound,
    shards, nexus, chaos.
    Provides protection from fear, blindness.
Slows your metabolism. Prevents paralysis. Sustains your life force.

the Elven Cloak of Hilpelya [6,+17] <+2, +1>
    --------------------------------------------
A mantle made of curious silken material by the Galadrim that wondrously takes
on the hues and shapes of its surroundings.

    +2 wisdom.
    +2 stealth.
    +1 speed.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
    Slows your metabolism.

    Shield of Preservation
because i had a build with +23 base Spd but ZERO resists, and a melee setup.
i had found this very early:
the Small Metal Shield of Randundeb [5,+17] <+5>
    ------------------------------------------------
    +5 speed.
Provides resistance to lightning, fire, cold.
    Cannot be harmed by acid.
    Sustains intelligence.
    Speeds regeneration.

tons of Helms, cannot remember which one i used. something to cap CON probably, idk. Had plenty of ESP options.

    the Set of Alchemist's Gloves of Elebrie (+6,+6) [0,+17] <+2, +3>
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
Highly protective gloves designed for an alchemist's elemental magics.

    +2 strength.
    +3 infravision.
    Provides resistance to fire, dark.
    Provides protection from fear, confusion.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
    Feather Falling. Prevents paralysis.

the Pair of Leather Boots 'Randorim' (+5,+3) [2,+9] <+2, +6>
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    +2 strength.
    +6 speed.
    Provides resistance to light.
Cannot be harmed by acid, fire.
(could have probably benefitted from just using BoS +10)

    the Arkenstone 'Uindir' <+2, +3>
    --------------------------------
    +2 constitution.
    +3 light.
    Provides protection from fear.
    Cannot be harmed by fire.
Radius 3 light. Cannot be refueled.

When activated, it lights and maps the entire level, sensing objects.
Takes 51 to 100 turns to recharge.
Your chance of success is 96.8%

got this SUPER early, idk like DL13.

because you have Sense Surroundings and Detection, not quite as important as with other classes, but still nice to have. And +2 CON.
Not having to deal with Fear the whole game was nice too.

the Amulet of Earthilya [+2] <+3>
    ---------------------------------
    +3 strength.
    +3 wisdom.
    Provides resistance to light, chaos.
    Provides protection from fear.

    the Band 'Faron' <+1, +5, +2>
    -----------------------------
    +1 wisdom.
    +5 stealth.
    +2 attack speed.
    +1 light.
    Provides immunity to lightning.
Provides resistance to acid, fire, cold, light.
    Provides protection from confusion.
    Cannot be harmed by lightning.
    Speeds regeneration.

MoD was doing 740 damage vs evil. With +2 blows my worst weapon at home was doing 400 vs evil, so, plenty of choice. Had to use some weird rapier just because i had no rDisen and was already below depth for things like drolems and such.

CL50, cant remember how many HP but over 1k. 1017 ?
    Spd +19 loaded.
no sWIS but all the other plus every resist in the game, including pStun.

I think the right change is to get rid of +shots and +attacks entirely. I'd replace old +1 with +20% to damage, either shots or attacks. It's wrong that +attacks helps warriors the least.
i think the problem is that +blows was designed with standarts in mind. So a small agile weapon like Sting can have the damage of a bigger weapon, while maintainig the "flavour" of a smaller weapon. It probably was never intended to go on *any* weapon, just in case you get a randart MoD with 8d8 and +2 blows.

+shots is kinda "bigger nuclear bomb" situation. Rangers already have around 5/6/700 vs evil (1k with HM) and that already trivializes any encounter that you are willing to waste ammo on (e.g any top-tier unique). With extra shots you're just turning ridiculous into more ridiculous.

    Meanwhile,

    High-Elf Ranger: https://forum.angband.live/ladder-show.php?id=25745

again won by using 2x Escaping and 5/5/5/5 at character creation. I even considered quaffing some Intellect, although early ranger with low STR is such a pain to run.
ESP at DL26 on a blessed dagger, then a +5 INT crown drop. Randart amulet with +3 Spd, and a RoP with not many bonuses but pBlind and pConf, +3 Spd, rDisench, and then engame bow with +2 shots and a solid +27 damage.

Nowhere near the most ridiculous launcher i've had (i think we're talking x6 bow with +30 and +1 shots), and ate a lot of ammo, but easy enough to run with basic arrows and Tenser's.

BONUS: went down to DL101 and saw LF 8-9, and there it was, the second Dragon Armor artefact. A bit late

    +1 shots means +1 shots.

.. i died to Kavlax *again*.

Saw him - thought "oh no you're not getting me this time" - teleported away, cleared most of the level, completely forgot he was there, walked into a room and got breathed on w/ no resistance.

i've lost 4 rangers 1 paladin, ALL of which had offhand +shots and paladin had +2 blows in the randart set and a MoD 9d8 Slay Evil.

Thats not a bad melee setup on your mage. The only detriment being that you are a mage.

CL18 ranger dead because - trying to find what a -5 was on DL22 - i ran into a scroll mimic, phased, couldn't be bothered to phase again or even aim manually, trying to kill a druid while not understanding that the scroll mimic was still shooting bolts at me.
