    Am I Missing Anything to Move on?

    Hey all, been a while since I did anything here, or played angband. A couple of days ago I picked it back up as something to do. After dying a silly death on Floor 2 with my ranger to a spike trap, I wizened up on remembering cure potions and dove... and dove... and dove....

    I ended up getting my first character below floor 70, (and only 5th below 50). I hit Level 98 with 3 speed, rbase, and not much else. I managed to scum for gear, and I'm starting to think about Sauron and Morgoth, but have never even thought about this before. Was curious if I should be trying to get anything else before I head down. My current plan is to max my Constitution and hit level 40 for extra shots, but want to take this opportunity to avoid doing anything stupid, since winning won't allow me to run away from these two scary dudes.

      First, post character dumps in "code" tags so monospace alignment is kept.

      More importantly: no you can't take Sauron, Morgoth, or say number of deep monsters. Any monster deeper than FL 70 can kill you in a single turn--as can a number from ~DL 50 and below. To take Morgoth, at a bare minimum you need about 700HP and about 20 base speed. (You can get by with less HP, but you need to play games with LOS.) You absolutely need better speed and more damage.

To take Morgoth, at a bare minimum you need about 700HP and about 20 base speed. (You can get by with less HP, but you need to play games with LOS.) You absolutely need better speed and more damage.
        You actually have 35 base speed, so that's fine; in fact, you could sacrifice some of that to get better damage (you want to stay at or above +30 speed when fighting Morgoth, but +20 plus temporary haste will do that).

        As far as better damage goes, I would be looking for a better bow - judge by comparing arrow damage with two different bows equipped - and possibly a ring of damage and/or an amulet of weaponmastery. Quite bit of your gear could be better, too - particularly the hat, and there exist artifact gloves with free action plus other stuff.

        You'll also probably need a few more *Healing*/Life potions, but time spent deep for the other things you need will probably net enough of those.

          Whoops. I didn't catch the improved speed. I'd definitely sacrifice some speed for damage and especially HP at +35. Beyond about +25, returns diminish fast.

            Thank you so much, I appreciate the input! I'm glad to know I'm still short on gear, last thing I want is to try and get senselessly killed when I have the resources to be hypothetically prepared. I'd ask for specific Sauron/Morgoth tips as well if people don't mind, or I may go look up some old LP archives to get some ideas, and maybe browse the forums. In the meantime, I'll get back to looking for a better set of gear!

            And thanks for fixing my dump, very new to this forum style. I'll keep in mind the code wrap for the future.

              Aim for a minimum of 550 hp initially. Big elemental damage is capped at 533 if you have single resistance. (With Resistance spell, it goes down to 177.) But there is also Mana storm, which does 500+ damage. Also beware the Jabberwock, the claws that catch, the teeth that bite! It also breathes chaos for 500HP. As does the Great Wyrm of Chaos, and that of Balance.

              That ring of Constitution <+5> is surely better than the second speed ring for now. For other classes, perhaps Tulkas. But for a Ranger, CON matters a lot more than STR and DEX.

                Thanks for the advice. As an update, I found a ring of Speed +19, so I swapped out the other ring slot for the Ring of Tulkas. At 774 HP now, but still haven't found a new bow or helmet, and my gloves merely became gloves of thievery. I also switched my speed boots out for the boots of Thror. Character Con is maxed now, but going to try and at least get to 40 and maybe replace my bow before even thinking about Sauron. I appreciate the words of warning, wish me luck!

                  18/200 CON gets 75 more HP than 18/190 at CL 50, so that final point really counts. A CL 40 ranger with 18/200 CON, 25+ speed, and a good bow and arrows will have no trouble with the bosses. After that point, the only additional benefits are become better fail rates on *Destruction* and Rune of Protection spells.

                      two bits of advice:

                      1. ranger is imho the hardest class. They are ridiculously powerful when they hit level cap and have a x5 Lothlorien, but are pretty much useless until CL40, and really could benefit from the last few levels.
                      2. try playing with randarts on, it's a completely different experience.

                        Ranger is 5he hardest class to start, sure. But it is the easiest to win with. Or it was before 4.2 introduced Single Combat...

                          Honestly, I may try randarts. I wanted to see a few more artifacts in the standard set before switching, I feel like I see very few relevant ones. Maybe after my second win I will try randarts. I tried a warrior to try seeing a few more artifacts that were relevant. He got further than any of my others, but died when returning to DL 97 with word of recall. The stairs were blocked by thuringwethil on one side, and a greater hell wyrm in a room and ancient multihued in the corridor on the other. I had the main gauche that gives fire immunity and slays dragons, so I figured I'd keep my distance from the wyrm so he couldn't hurt me, use a temporary speed boost to outspeed him, mash the Ancient Multihued with my dagger, then run for the exit. Turns out there was also a Greater Balrog also in front of the stairs. I decided here, rather than teleworking away, to try and shoot and scoot the hell wyrm and hope the Balrog didn't wake up, then consider how I get to the stairs. Naturally as a warrior, I woke it up. I still for some reason wanted to kill the wyrm, so I just used a banishment scroll for the Balrog. I was at 245/360, and the banishment scroll did 300 to kill me. Oops. I think the next attempt at actually winning will be a mage though. Reliable detection is nice.

                            That's what _Destruction and ?Teleport level are for. I carry them in preference to things like slow monster.

                              I left Destruction scrolls at home, and I find teleport level to be rare. I had the speed advantage due to a staff of speed though.
