So, how do I get in? Playing with Preserve Mode: Off and the level intially felt (special) meaning there was at least one artifact on the ground somewhere. Fortunately, a little poking around revealed Glamdring and Mook sitting on the floor in a small glass walled vault off the right side of the screen. After that, the level went to "Bad Feeling", so I got the artifacts and its ok to leave, the question remains: what if I hadn't gotten lucky? I'd pretty much be screwed if there was something nice in there. Anyway, its a problem with Preserve Mode being off. Another possibility would be to earthquake or *destruction* part of the vault, as I believe that changes the nature of the squares affected, allowing at least the possibility of phase door/teleporting into the vault.
