How to make tome harder
OK, in order to play a *hard* game of tome, I turned IRONMAN_ROOMS on, and ALWAYS_SMALL levels. I cleaned out that small part before I had to flee. Found a manticore, and a bunch of snagas in there too... Note the dungeon and level

Yeah I'm currently trying to take a demonologist through ironman/always small. I tore down a wall on BDw1 and an Ancient Gold Dragon rushed me. Another time Medusa came running out and surrounded me with hydras--both times I got away with teleport scrolls. Gotta gotta gotta be prepared with the right gear to play ironman.

I don't know if ironman is precisely harder. It's just different. Certainly you need to be prepared (it helps to level up a bit in the wilderness first). Classes that find ironman rooms fairly easy (and it gives you a quick start to the game) include sorceror and possessor. I really enjoy the beginning of an ironman game but I frequently get frustrated later in the game and die stupidly... perhaps because I have less invested in the character because it levelled up so fast.
