The Hengband Screenshots Gallery: Metal Babble Stats by kingvictory2003

The Metal Babble ('j')/('j'): [(r)ecall, ESC]
You have killed at least 5 of these creatures.
It is normally found at depths of 4000 feet, and moves incredibly quickly. A
kill of this creature is worth about 615384.62 points for a 50th level
character. It is magical, casting spells intelligently which produce fire
balls, invoke raw Logrus, psycho-spear, produce mana bolts, blink-self or
teleport-self; 1 time in 1. It has an armor rating of 10000 and a life rating
of 3d2. It is cold blooded. It is not detected by telepathy. It resists all
and teleportation. it won't evolve. It cannot be stunned, confused or slept.
It is ever vigilant for intruders, which it may notice from 2000 feet. It may
carry up to 12 exceptional objects. It can hit to disenchant with damage 1d10,
hit to disenchant with damage 1d10, touch to drain charges, and touch to drain
charges.

Metal Babble Stats
Among the numerous things in Hengband that make it my favorite variant, the japanese RPG references/monsters are some of the best. The famous Metal Babble I think originally appeared in Dragon Warrior II, as a very low hit point, very cowardly monster with near-invincibility to damage. Only a few special things in the game could damage it, such as dragonfire, and the (in)famous poison needle, which either does one damage, or has a low chance to instantly kill monster. As the Metal Babble only has 6 hitpoints, six strikes from the needle or a lucky fatal shot would kill it, but just look at the armor class, resistances, and extremely deadly arsenal of spells (which it casts 100% of the time when in LOS). The speed of the darned things is +80, but the rewards--exceptional drops, an insane amount of experience, and the pure satisfaction in exploding one--are well worth it.

Do you not get the basic 5% guaranteed hit vs the Babble in Hengband? With 6 blows/turn, that would off him in ~5 turns.

Actually, even with a Monk's 12 blows/turn with max level, ring of extra attacks +3 and jacket of shiva's avatar, I haven't been able to kill one without a poison needle, although in theory, it's possible.

In Heng monster armor reduces damage, not just hit rating, so you'll need up to 6 hits; a lot more than 5 turns

Haha, so it really IS a reference to Dragon Quest? THE METAL SLIME DRAWS NEAR! FIGHT MAGIC ITEM RUN :D

Wonder why it resists "All" AND teleportation, though? Does that mean it doubly resists teleportation? :P

Wonder if Hengband has some of those silly weapons too, like the aforementioned poison needle, or Astraea's abacus? ;)

Yes indeed, the poison needle exists in Hengband as a 1d1 weapon and is always (+0, +0). and to my great entertainment, it can be blessed by a priest--"The poison needle shines!"

I can't think of other silly weapons, although there might be a few references I don't get, such as the Nunchuku "Hyousi-gi" that actiaves for "beat wooden clappers" (read: aggravate monsters" every turn. There's also the Capture Ball, which I hear is a Pokemon reference.

The fishingpole of Taikubo, activable for fishing (dunno where it comes from). I never found any use to it.

The flail "Windblows", found on Bull gates in M$'s quest, which slows, produces chaotic effects, etc..

Also Excalibur Jr. found on "Pip, the braver from another world", relating to books "whose hero is you" (dunno how to translate it from french), it's a 'RPG' books collection : you open doors, kill monsters, get loot, playing with dices.
I dunno if they implemented it, but in the books, E.J. refuses to fight spiders.
