I also managed to replace most of my body parts with better ones found in the dungeon. My clockwork arms gave me a second blow with my cutlass. I cracked my first vault, but Lot 249 proved too tough and chased me off before I found whatever was causing that superb feeling. I could have used it too, as I've yet to find an artifact or ego of any type. Putting all my points into melee skills. So far, so good.
Just one question.
What does the message "Your engine warms up." mean?
On 2.6.2009 06:41 buzzkill wrote: Well I found another level with a superb feeling and cleared the whole thing. Not sure what the feeling was for, unless it was the numerous books I found. The next level was better though only a good feeling, it quickly produced a spear of weakness, which I put to good use despite it obvious flaws. I hod no remove curse, so I used it to kill Light Fingered Sonya, Phineas T Barnum, and Lot 249, none of which put up much of a fight. Barnum dropped (or was guarding) both the artifact cutlass and artifact throwing hatchet in my inventory. The hatchet (3d8, 5 blows) far exceeds any weapon I've had previously. I was using a 1d8 (+0,+0) hatchet most often up to this point. Also picked up the steel legs with the nifty +5 speed and a big boost to AC. I feel sorry for the poor saps inhabiting the next few levels of the dungeon because there is going to be a massacre when I get there.
On 2.6.2009 07:13 Pete Mack wrote: That throwing axe is really sweet. 3d8|3 with a light weapon is god-like. (There's only one better light weapon--the Cutlass of Cpt. Nemo, which is preposterously overpowered)
On 2.6.2009 17:44 buzzkill wrote: As expected, moving easily up through the dungeon, only recalling when my pack fills with books. System Cypher now gives full resists as well as berserk and speed (sweet!). I gained a 6th blow with my hatchet (sweet!). I found even better legs and sold my old ones for 25000, so I guess GP is no longer a problem (nice!). A few more uniques died without a serious fight. My biggest problem is dealing with clouds and spirits as I have no attack other than melee which, for the most part, passes right through them. Four skills maxed out, still dumping most skill points into melee. Nothing much to buy in town.
On 2.6.2009 21:49 buzzkill wrote: My new overclocked head moves my base speed up to +13 (sweet!). Moving up into the dungeon meeting very little resistance. Even uniques aren't challenging. I'm probably playing a little too sloppily right now. I hope it doesn't come back to bite me.
What skills do I need to use the Book of Arcane Incantations (latin, occult, ritual)? I think it may be the solution to my 'clouds and spirits' problem.
On 3.6.2009 01:41 buzzkill wrote: New legs increased my speed up to +20. System Cypher is almost constant now so my walking around speed is +30. Just walked through and cleared a large vault without much resistance. I'm feeling invincible. Diving deeper almost as quickly as I can, taking time out only to kill uniques and explore unknown items. I haven't phased or ported in a long time. I'm beginning to wonder why I'm carrying the scrolls. Maybe my best character ever, and the realized potential to go much deeper.

On 3.6.2009 06:51 Pete Mack wrote: You're a bit light on WP and damage--invest in toughness (this is not optional!). In steamband, it's absolutely essential to *DIVE* the last 10 levels, kill the bosses, and retire. There are just too many insanely dangerous non-uniques 'above' dl 40.
On 4.6.2009 03:04 buzzkill wrote: Still on cruise control. I was up to DL20 but a rare crash set me back a little. Not many uniques (or useful stuff) appearing anymore. The only enemies that give me any trouble at all are those that resist both sharp and pointed weapons. Pride (my new best friend) falls easily and is worth a ridiculous 5000+ XP for my 30th level Tobor.
Pete, I wouldn't have considered toughness because WP's have never been an issue with this character, probably because of the high AC (most enemies just miss). Same with mana, so I may try to swap out the amulet of mana for more muscle or agility, and try to regain that 7th blow once again (I had 7 blows for a brief moment, but I lost it when I traded in my old set of legs for an extra +7 speed). Is there anything in my home that you would recommend using.
On 8.6.2009 04:40 buzzkill wrote: Still cruising and gaining levels. Found a vault on DL18 but by the time I figured out that Clipncut Soilders were rapid breeders, they had over run the area. With just my 'awesome' melee attack, I couldn't kill them fast enough. I did managed to knock off a few more uniques and collect a pack full of books. No new items of note.
On 9.6.2009 03:40 buzzkill wrote: Gained DL14. I had my first brush with death in quite a while. There's a vault here with half a dozen books in it, but I doubt that I'll crack it. A Chiang-Shi hit me with nether and took me me from full 700+ to about 150 HP in a single attack. Nether and Anti-Photons seems to be the attacks that are hitting me the hardest right now. I need a good blunt/swap weapon and some more device skill so I can use TO effectively.
On 9.6.2009 08:22 Pete Mack wrote: You are getting close to suicide dive depth--above dl 10, you need to quick kill the bosses lest the horrible (non-unique!) creatures kill you first.
On 9.6.2009 20:12 buzzkill wrote: Thanks Pete, those extra WP you recommended are really coming in handy. Finally have my magic device skill to the point where a can TO somewhat reliably (50/50). Made it to DL10 and spent a considerable amount of time getting into a small vault so I could secure my new body. AC now 200+. Rooster Cog breathed something??? at me and took me from almost full to 0 (zero) HP. I guess I got lucky there. I beginning to see what you mean about suicide depth. I have resists and speed +30 and some enemies can still dish out ~700 damage in a single attack. I've been taking out uniques but not nearly as many as I've seen. They are becoming very hard to get to, but only moderately hard to kill. The rapidly reproducing Cuttenclip Soldiers and Timothy Tummel's tunneling ants are a real pain in the ass.
On 14.6.2009 21:39 buzzkill wrote: Made it to DL2. The real non-unique killer is the guided missile. I've taken a few shots at the good doctor, the best of which had him down to 50%. He keeps summoning, and then the Lion Men stun me (and if I stick around, heavily stun me), so I retreat. I could kill him easily in a 1 on 1 battle (dishing out about 10% damage per round). I just acquired a few items that may help. The Trousers of the Chemist allowed to swap out my Ring of Resist Bewilderment for one of Accuracy +23, and the new Cloak of Shadow (+stealth, wraithform) should help me avoid the stunning attacks, as well as get around a little easier. I also picked up the locket of Madame Defarge (it was a viable option before I found the cloak) which would allow me to swap out the Ring of Free Action as well, but I'd have to deal with the aggravation. I'm running low on consumables. Repair Kits are hard to come by, and my shortened dives often don't restock the stores. I'm recalling when low on WP now, using my RK's only when I have a shot at killing the Doc.
The game has been crashing more frequently lately (not responding in Vista). It's frustrating, so I turned up the auto save frequency (less frustrating).
My legs and arms are both damaged (I think). I wish it would give you this info (as well as the penalties) on the Inspect screen. I can't remember what happened 10000 turns ago.
On 16.6.2009 03:43 buzzkill wrote: Congratulation to me on my first **WINNER** (of any rogue-like) ever.
The game crashed again after I killed Dr. Moreau. Luckily I manually saved it before proceeding to DL1. The Amulet of Stealth's wraithform ability made all the difference against the doctor. I was able to flee from most of his summons and kill the rest, keeping the main battle mostly one on one.
It took me a while to find Fu Manchu on DL1. The level was crawling with Nazi's, multiple pits and vaults. It took me a little while to find Fu, and a little while longer to beat him (partially because I had to kill off so many of his lackeys), as he had trouble keeping up with me as I drifted effortlessly through the granite. Also killed Jack the Ripper on DL1 just for kicks.
In retrospect I think the Dr. Moreau was the tougher opponent. Consumables were not a problem as I thought they would be. I only used a couple of RK's throughout the course of both fights.
It seems to me that the Auotmaton/Adventurer is an easy combo to win with, or maybe I just found a lot of speed and a kick butt weaponry early on. I did land on 0 HP's several times during my adventure. I wish I understood a little more about why that happens. Steam seems to have an inherent dislike of insta-death.
