Double-frost bolting was enough to vape me good, I'd hoped to circumvent it completely; cleared out a tough orc ecology (mages & black orcs primarily) and got a level, but no stairs down. I should note I died about 4 squares away from the '>'.

I probably should have rcalled, broken stats, carrying unided shots that made me 1 pt slowed, and definitely about time I spent some of that cash on enchanting my kit, but I had set myself the challenge of doing this in one dive, a decision which I still don't regret.

I do regret attacking in melee, instead of phasing or at least giving the lightning wand a try. I could also have swallowed a potion at this point, as I was somewhat injured (though not in a critical state, the bolts just hurt bad).

Back to the drawing board... (again)

You seem to dive quite aggressively --- nice. From my experience up to 4-level dungeons are fit for no-WOR, one-way adventures, because if you explore most of every level (which you have to do to get enough EXP and mush^H^H^H^Hequipment to tackle the guardian) you still have a chance of not having a totally overfull backpack or totally depleted consumables/stats. For this reason there are quite a few 4-level dungeons all over the place, though I"m not sure guardians are balanced with dungeon depths in all of them. (With deep dungeons this is not so crucial because you just explore them with WOR over and over again until you are ready for the guardian.)

Yes, something about UnAngband keeps me diving; if I don't like the ecologies or I'm bored of the feature tiles I just drop another floor; If I get a cool level, or a good feeling, I explore more fully.

With the smaller dungeons like Bree, Trollshaw or the Old Forest, I generally find clearing a couple of floors to get XP & supplies will give you enough power to defeat the guardian. This one is slightly longer, so it just means I clear some floors more completely (more XP, as I have to go deeper - I try to stay within 1 clev of dlev because thats where Un seems to be most fun, challenging but doable) and that lets me skip out some "boring place"s so that I don't have too much of a headache carrying stuff, or running out of supplies (I have no spare oil here - I "gave" most of it to Smeagol, but I'm not sure he appreciated my gifts!)

That said, just like with my last character, the best option would have been to recall, and do the guardian on a second dive; but, after dying on levels 11, then 12 it seems like the great goblin is due a home visit on floor 13 from me this evening... :]
