          such stunt.

Way too early to be posting, I know, but I just wanted to let people know I'm attempting Nightmare Mode again.

Why Ranger? Well, my 3 favorite classes are Priest, Ranger, and Magic-Eater. One of the big benefit of Priests and Magic-Eaters (0% Fails on things like Heal and/or Destrution) doesn't apply here because of the hidden 5% fail. The other reason is that Rangers actually are pretty decent in the early-game, and IIRC, I was struggling a lot with getting to clvl 20 before when I tried Nightmare Mode.

Thieves Quest was a bit of a scare. I had even leveled up to 8 farming Worms and Rats in Yeek Cave before tackling it, and they were still hitting much harder that I would have thought. Barely made it though, thanks to a !oHeroism.

Wandered around Outpost waiting for Lion Heart or Farmer Maggot to show, and Lion Heart dropped a cool Defender weapon, covering both RBase and FA/SI.

I'm a bit curious how to continue now though. Dlvl 6 quest might be hard, and Orc Camp quest for sure cannot be tackled easily as a normally do. I suppose the only thing left is to try to hunt down Maggot..

Sigh, RNG doesn't seem to want me to have any INT or CON stat-ups. Gotten 3 WIS already..

Anyways, Smeagol dropped Gloves of Genji, which marks only my second (or is it third?) time ever of finding these. Wielding them for now for the DEX bonus, but I doubt that I'll dual wield in the end-game.

Finished the Orc Camp quest, after buying plenty of ?oTeleport. I remembered that I had Berserk-at-Will, so I didn't need nearly as many !oCSW and !oCCW.

So, mentally divide damage by 2 for Nightmare Mode, I'm about 53 damage per round. Of course, then there's the speed penalty, another -30%, and I'm at the equivalent of about 35 damage per round in a normal game.

I get the feeling Slayer is destined for greatness. Orfax, encountered in Angband 10, drops Nature's Gifts!! So, I'm at an amazing 131 AC already. That, plus Berserk ability, makes me amazingly effective at combat already, although I'm still trying to take it easy for fear of Nightmare Mode.

Ghost 'Q' dropped fairly wimpy reward: Boots of Jumping. Ah well.

OMG! Mimic quest gave an awesome randart bow with +20 todam, XMight, and +3 CON! Also Thranduil for ESP! Awesomeness.

Emboldened by that, I went ahead and tried Vault, but that ended in ignominomy as shown in the screenshot. Then, since I had Stoneskin and ESP already, plus Nature Awareness for Detection, I went into Killing Fields and gained 6 clvls (24 to 30) as standard practice. The Warriors moved faster and hit harder, but still not too bad.

I would have stayed longer, except I blew up my Wand of Teleport Other on the 3rd recharge (killing only the Warriors outside the room by then :/

But still, doing good!

Went and read some of Elliott's comments on his Beastmaster for hints on how to go through the mid-levels, but it doesn't seem to be of much help.

Specifically, he didn't have one problem that most characters have.. SPEED! I'm definitely switching over to Sorcery for second realm once I hit clvl 34, but until then, I'm likely to be stuck at +0 speed, which makes me *very* worried in Nightmare Mode. And on top of that, I don't seem to find ego items nearly as a often as normally, so money is actually still a problem (I usually set the automizing to start destroying everything around now, but due to the high consumption of ?oTeleport, that's not possible yet for Slayer).

The other annoying thing is that, I'm not really brave enough to attempt Arena against the Basilisk yet. True Resistance is still much to high fail rate, and Poison at double-damage plus the faster speed could be doom. I should be able to knock out all the other ones (including the Mithril Golem, which is usually the bottleneck).

Oy, drew Ghatonotha for dlvl 24 quest. That was a "head immediately up the stairs" type quest. >_<

Decided to risk it with the Basilisk in the Arena with my 46% Fail True Resistance. And of course I fail twice in casting it. But fortunately for me, the Basilisk took all of its turns to approach me, so after my two fails, it was right next to me, and then I just smacked it down with melee.

Ran to Ry'leh for the Scroll of Acq, and got ambushed twice in the course of that. Managed to survive both encounters (although just barely on the first.. after a teleport to get away from a Kraken, I landed fairly close to a Fasti-thingamabob, and it spent its turn trying to curse me (which I successfully resisted) rather than breathing acid).

As for the reward.. well, it's an upgrade to my non-ego Splint Mail, but I must say I had much higher hopes.

OMG!! Okay, some characters are lucky, and some characters are -=*LUCKY*=-. Guess which one Slayer is.

So I wander around Castle early 30's looking for stat potions, and find a group of Magma intrusions. Since I was complaining about money before, I decided to farm those for a bit, and got back killing ~400 of them, with nearly 100k in gold. I check Armory.. and see that awesome armor with +4 Speed, STR, CON, and RShards, RConf, RChaos, and RDisenchant for sale for 140k.

I sell some 3rd level books I had been collecting and buy it, of course. I head back down and start looking for potions once more, and ended up killing Rich. Level feeling immediately changed to Special, and not too surprisingly Eowyn was there. Wow, that's pretty good, I thought. Another +4 Speed on top of my +4 speed from Armor. But then I realized since I had the Gloves of Genji, I might as well try to dual wield (since I hadn't hit dlvl 40 yet, RPois from spell should be OK).

So I ravaged the dungeons with my +8 speed and 500+ damage per round. Robin Hood shows up and casts some traps, so I shot him in annoyance. And... level feeling goes Special again. Check the loot, and what do I find but Ringil!!

OMG, +14 base speed barely an hour after I was just complaining about Speed.

Cloning Pits complete. There was a fairly big scare because two of the random monsters were a DE Sorceror and a Dracolich, but I managed to prevail. Used 9 !oSpeed and 5 !oHealing. Gachapins were surprisingly easy, thanks to detection range pulling. Father Dagons a little bit of an annoyance, but also not bad.

Shameful as it may sound, I actually had some trouble at the beginning against the melee units. The Grendels and Toms and Dungeon Cleaners were substantially more buff than I expected.

Got hit with the Moronification, as expected. I'll leave with it. It's pretty much inevitable.

7 artifacts to show, including Caspanion and Fiona. Nothing immediately useful though.

Vapor Quest and Old Castle complete.

Picked up some 20 mutations from Vapor Quest, but one of them ended up being "Vulnerability to Elements." Ugh. Sold some books and headed to Zul, where I found that again, Mutations costed 5k to remove (did Brian make this permanent?). So I grudgingly shelled out the cash and was quite unhappy to see Telepathy and Extraordinary Resilience removed before Vulnerability finally disappeared.

The mutation I wanted most on Slayer was "Hit and Away." Unfortunately, I did not pick this up. Did pick up (and retain) Teleporting Randomly (yay for following Oberon!), Eat Magic (Hm.. normally I'd be ecstatic, but this is Nightmare Mode, and I'm doubting my ability to hit any good Fail Rate for Herbal Healing..), Magic Resistance (good for killing Amberites, but not touching Chemist with a 100 foot pole), and White Aura.

Then went and did Old Castle. It was surprisingly easy, all things considered. Each of the two Greater Titans costed 2 !oHealing. Dracolich, Iron Lich, and most other things taken out with ease. The Raal's room at the end was really annoying though:

First try, I realized they were abusing my weakness and exclusively attacking with Poison. So I teleport out, rest up, swap in the Shield to get double RPois, and try again. Attempt to approach, and realize I'd die before getting into the room. Teleport out, swap in Brand (which I found off a Fallen Angel in the Old Castle), and try again. *STILL* can't approach quickly enough (and realized that when in LoS of all 4, they dish out more than 300 HP of damage per round). Teleport out, and finally, decided to approach from the South instead of the East, and shot them one by one with arrows with my Longbow. Finally Mission Success.

Geez. Not that Long Bow of the Bard is any good compared to "Grizzly Bear."

On 28.6.2006 04:05 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote:

Found a decent number of artifacts, including Jack's Cloak, Hell Collar, Crimson, and some guantlets with +4 CON.

On the contrary, Elliot, I find Bullseye to be one of the more useful of the new artifacts, because I see Moronification as inevitable, so the +3 INT and +3 WIS from a cloak slot is a huge help for tryingt o get over 18/200. Sure wish I had it right now..

Fail rate for Wall of Stone and Herbal Healing is still 60+%, so I'm not doing the final few Arena fights yet. I'd like them to be no higher than about 25% for fighting against GWoP and Babble.

RDisenchant doesn't seem to have shown up on many items so far, other than my current body armor. Looks like that might be end-game gear, despite the relatively low AC value and the lack of RBase.

How many characters, after finding Anabasis and Maelstrom, would choose to use neither? And if it wasn't for Jack's Cloak, I wouldn't be using Diatribe either. Telepathy is paramount is a game where just about everything can breath for max damage.

Who would've thought that when I finally switch to Brand, it would be for RFire, rather than for the +10 speed? But in fact, it is so:

I'm at +28 base speed without Brand, and have Haste Self spell, so that's more than enough speed. Found Ingwe recently, which gives a nifty +3 INT and covers all of RBase.. except RFire. I could swap in Anabasis, but then my damage output is shot. So I switched in Brand.

Just... total... WOW.

Mephistopheles, my dlvl 76 quest, after proving his scariness by dropping me down more than 900 HP in a single double-move round (Hand of Doom + Breath Nether), down to 4 HP, proved not nearly as difficult when set up correctly in a nice anti-summoning corridor (and my saving throw is pretty high... must have failed to save against the Hand of Doom because I was Berserking).

Guess what he drops? FEANOR + SHIVA'S JACKET! Another another Xmight Crossbow, but that's small beans ^^ Though, it gives +3 to INT, so I might use it later if I want low fail Herbal Healing.

Can't fit in Feanor yet, because Buffy (the boots I created are now my only source of RDisenchant), and I need both Ring slots for RPois and RSound. Very tenuously covering all resists at the moment.

Benedict on Angband 90 dropped another Ring of Lordly Protection, which was generated with RSound, so finally I get to remove my Ring of Resist Sound, as well as Frakir. With all resists covered and 1 free Ring slot, I was a bit at a loss of what to use.

First instinct drifted to RoExtraAttacks(+2) and the RoSpeed(+10), of course, but neither is really that useful. The former boost Ringil's damage by about 150, or a total damage increase of 15%. The latter would bring my speed up from 33+10 to 43+10, but I think that's in the saturation region.

I decided to do something weird and put on the Ring of Mana. And then I realized another of its powers that I had never noticed before.

It improves the min fail rate by an extra 1%! That is, I can cast my [Master] level Nature Awareness at 2% Fail right now. So, if you're a Ranger, and you wear 2 RoMana, plus the Robe of Incans, then presumably you can get down to 0% fail on Herbal Healing O_o.

If I win with this guy, I'm going Magic-Eater next for Nightmare. But we should migrate back to Heng for a real challenge ;-)

When's the last time someone saw a character with this much speed? 59+10 ^^

Went ahead and won, with a little more difficulty than I should have had, because I caught the Serpent in my *Destruction* radius when I had him at 2 stars >_<

Not too much to say. Was a bit disappointed that I never found my namesake, Slayer, but I can't complain with Ringil and Aglarang with Genji Gloves.

Switched to Death at the very end, because I realized I didn't need the Haste Self anymore at +59 base speed, so I actually used it mostly for the Polymorph Vampire spell in order to reduce fail for Herbal Healing. Of course, the fact that the Serpent kept dispelling it made it not see that much use after all.

Too bad I never found any Amulets of INT +5 or +6. If that was the case, I'd have switched that in for Hell Collar, and used much less resources for the last two fights.

Obviously, I wore Bullseye for the fight. Under 900 HP isn't acceptable against the Serpent.

Dave, congrats on the win. By the end, I decided that while Nightmare mode is certainly harder than regular, its not nearly as difficult as I expected.

I think my hard starts, at least, came from two factors: 1) Not knowing what to expected. Hard to know what to expect when you have no idea what the monsters (or you) are capable of. I remember probing EVERYTHING in the early going to see what was what.

And, 2) Intimidation. Probably as a result of 1) above, and reading about all those horrendous things, I was pretty scared. But, really, its like the Serpent. Its hard and all, but if you can survive dancing with it for a bit, you kinda get a feel for what it can do. Once the first couple of stars come off, barring something unlucky like a double-move mana storm, you'll probably take it down.

Still, its pretty darn hard and your congradulations are well earned.

Maybe I'll give that Nightmare mode Bard a try in Hengband and see how ferocious it is.

Did you know the Hengband World Score Server is back up? Looks like it went back up in June. That gives Hengband some of its old fun back.

Yep. Nightmare mode in Hengband is quite a bit more difficult than it is in Entroband.

Hm, I tried it a little bit, and think you may have been onto something with the Beastmaster. Except you need an early mount. So Cavalry might actually be pretty good. I managed to get Rhaegar the Draconian Cavalry up to clvl 12 before he died (shortly after his horse died).

One thing that kind of upset me was that Maggot and Lion Heart never showed up in Outpost (I scummed a good 10 minutes). Those two aren't removed in Nightmare, are they?
