Finally a good start. The name is due to his original race - a vampire. I think maybe that RNG isn't as random as its name implies. The gambling place functioned more like a bank for this char. Within about 2 mins he was up to 500k from bout 15 or so - allowed him to buy the force claymore & the dragon armour

Oh, sorry, shoulda mentioned before. I picked in between. Good payoff for suprising results. I've done it quite a bit - win some lose some. I've tried poker - but its no jacks-or-better. Its straight or better and thats not even close to fair :).
The slots is the worst out of all of them. To get the 36-1 payout the odds are 1 in 729. It is, however, a very good way to lose all your money very quickly.

I notice from your other dump that you're new to heng/entro. Thats priority 1 for you there :).
And almost as close is priority for getting confusion resistance.

After that you are good to go and next will be poison / chaos resistances.

Nice weapon and rings for this stage of the game! I'm surprised your damage output isn't higher, though STR and DEX boosts should give you at least 2 more blows/round. Can you activate the confusing, blinding radiation, yet? It can do a whole host of bad things to all monsters within LoS.

FA is definitely your first priority. rConfusion would also be nice, but can wait. You might want to carry that ring around as a swap, just in case. I'd head down to Angband level 23 or so (don't go to 24 quite yet) and make regular rounds of the town Black Markets, looking for a source of FA. If that fails, one of the quests starting with the Mimic quest will give you an FA ring, but that first quest can easily go badly wrong.

Going on strong so far. A potion of polymorph got rid of some of my nasty mutations (real fat & rotting flesh - great combination) and a few good ones too. I have some specific questions - like, which weapon should I wield, is there something special I need to do to duel-wield, what is a good level to read that ?oAquirement, and is there a forum or FAQ that I can find those answers? I've tried to figure out the short-hand inscriptions - so hopefully you guys understand what that randart does.

On 2.12.2005 01:09 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Nice results so far. You've still got some good mutations. Steel skin is one of my favorites, as is being able to drive yourself berserk (hint: going berserk gives you 30 extra hp, or heals you 30 hp if you're wounded, and you can do it more than once. Handy low cost healing.)

Its great that you put in the effort trying to figure out the shorthand ego-item descriptions, but I'll tell you another secret. There's a MUCH easier way to do it. When you go to inscribe an item, type "%all" except without the quotation marks, and the game will automatically write out the description all by itself. Great time saver.

Ooh, the lance is fire branded AND force branded? Sweeeeet. Force branding eats up your spell points with every hit, but it stacks with the fire brand (force branding "aka strikes at enemies powerfully with your mana", is the only brand that stacks with other brands. Well, vorpal kinda does too, but it operates completely differently) and since lances are heavy, you're probably getting lots of critical hits, which ALSO stack.

You've got a real weapon dilemma. That lance does a LOT of damage with every blow. All brands multiply the base dice your weapons does, so vs. a non-fire resistant monster, your lance'll do 2d8*3 (for the firebrand)*3.5 (for the force brand until you run out of spell points)*2 ("good" hit)= 42d8+36 (your base damage bonus)+5 (bonus from "good" hit) means an average of 230 damage per HIT. Yikes.

On the other hand, you still don't have free action yet, and that's seriously going to kill you, and probably soon. How exactly did you get past the Dark Elven Lords quest without it? Remember those stunwalls on the right side of the map? They hit to paralyze. One landed blow from one of them and it would have been over.

Sting, as you've probably noticed when you *ID*'ed (you did *ID* it, right?) has a zillion good powers, one of which is free action. It also has extra blows, stat bonuses, you name it. Of course, it won't do anything near the damage that lance will do, but I'd still go with Sting for now.

You've got some nice other weapons, but none compete with Sting or the lance. Winblows does nice damage, but has too many penalties, and that falchion is superb, but I don't think it has FA, and doesn't do as much damage as the lance.

Wield Sting, clear out the Mimic's Quest and the one after it, wear the ring of free action, and then go back to the lance.

On 2.12.2005 01:15 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Dual wielding is really hard to do well. You need to practice with your weapons until you're very accurate with them, then try wielding two light weapons. Hopefully you'll be down to -30 or -40 to-hit or so, and then practice using dual-wielding for a while. You'll probably get your to-hit down to 0 or so eventually. With great weapons, you'll probably do better. That will work fine up on even moderately armored opponents (AC 100 or so), but it'll start being a real problem against anything tougher.

Certain classes (warriors, samurai, and berserkers) do it the best (especially berserkers), but the real key is finding either the artifact gauntlets "Spec" or a pair of gauntlets of Genji (ego item, but fairly rare), both of which significantly decrease the penalty for dual-wielding. You'll notice in the late-game character dumps that pretty much everyone who is dual-wielding is either a Berserker, or is using one of those sets of gloves.

Read scrolls of Acquisition as deep as possible. The first level of the Dark Cave (level 55) is a good choice, but your visibility is bad in there, so read it grab whatever you get, and exit fast.

On 2.12.2005 01:26 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote:
Elliott makes good points as usual. I'll just add that Dual Wielding with a Chaos Warrior is difficult since they start at unskilled. Wait until CL30 or so, and then pick light weapons that you are already Skilled or higher with. Finally, buy !oHeroism and ?oHolyChant ... lots of them. You will probably need both if you every expect to hit anything. Also, if you can get a Main Gauche or a Wakizashi in your left hand, then that will help out with your to hit with both weapons.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I used sting & the resistance shield for a little bit - that worked out well. I also thought about going to the level 55 dungeon to read the ?oAquirement, but I thought - if 55 is good, 80 is better. I just have to cross the sea without getting killed. It was very, very close. The only thing that saved me was multiple teleports until I hit the edge. I was rewarded with that ring of speed. After that, I was determined to use my lance with the speed and extra attack rings, so I kept diving to the same level and and continually checked the BM for something of free action. Found another ?oAquirement - this time I could recall to Rylah - much easier. I was rewarded with a cloak. I wasn't impressed till I id'd it - it gives me free action. So, All I need now are the whack of other resists.

Oh, and a note on how I finished the dark elven lords quests with the stunwalls - I am bery bery sneaky. I was stealthy enough not to wake anyone else. I got paralyzed a handful of times, but only one stunwall was ever near me and no other baddies - so it was a minor nusiance.

Again, thanks for everyones helps and hints so far - and keep em coming :)

Ooh, you're a lucky man to survive the trek to R'lyeh. Its definitely the place to read scrolls of acquisition, but after barely making it a couple times with mid-level characters, I finally decided it was simply too risky with characters under clevel 40 or so.

That having been said, scrolls of acquisition seem to produce rings of speed surprisingly often there. I suspect they are native to dlevel 80, making it the perfect place to get them.

Ditto what Chris and jmiddendorf said. ESP at this stage of the game is extremely handy, as you've probably already discovered.

You're looking really good, and can still get another blow with that lance if you can raise your STR and DEX enough. Don't get overconfident.

Looks like you have had INSANE luck with equipment.+8 speed ring on l28 char lol. I sure hope your next 200 characters always get useless spell book or magic resistance item for any caster.

I gave him till the good ol' father was just about dead then gave him a breath from my dragon armour - that finished off dagon and mosot of his crew. Then ubbo rushed me and fell quickly. He left me a nice gift - The plate armour of isuldur. I found the crossbow and helm in the BM - less than 100k combined for the two. Now looking for a better ammy. Yes, the Cloning Pits should be next on your to-do list, NOT the Spawning Pits.

Among the various town quests, the trifecta of nastiest quests are: the Royal Crypt, Eric's Stronghold, and the Spawning Pits. The Crypt has the single nastiest trick to play on characters, but the other two can easily spiral out of control for even the most powerful characters. In general, I wouldn't attempt those 3 until you're level 50 and very powerful. Even then, I'd consider just skipping them because the rewards, while reasonably nice (well, for 2 of them. The 3rd is a disappointment.), are nowhere near adequate compensation for the effort and risk.

As for the others, you're probably powerful enough to do the Haunted House, but it can be tricky, and you'll really want rPoison and rNether. Rise and Fall of Micro$oft I'd wait on until you have more HP (the treasure generally isn't very good, but there is one specific item that can be useful in completing your resistances), and the Killing Fields basically boils down to whether or not you can take a Maulotaur.

The Cloning Pits has a great reward, and its kinda considered a milestone for your character to cross. Your character is absolutely powerful enough to do it, BUT you're missing a few things.

Since you haven't done it before, you want to go in as fully prepared as possible, and that includes: rPoison and rChaos, 10+ uses of speed (some combination of potions and charges from staves of speed), 5+ potions of healing or *healing*, at least one potion of enlightenment (use it at the very start so you can see what you're dealing with), levitation, about 100 arrows that are enchanted as high as you can get them (+6 or +7 at your level), 2-4 potions of resistance, and as many potions of CCW and Heroism, and scrolls of teleport and Holy Chant as you can carry. Plus some food, of course. Oh, and bring 50+ scrolls of ID. If you manage to clear out an area, try to hide the scrolls of ID there so you don't have to lug them around or risk them all getting burned up. rNether might be nice, but isn't crucial.

Some of those things you already have, and with experience you'll learn to do it while missing one or more of those things, but don't try that yet.

Well, now that I had the basic resists covered (I picked up poison res with that fancy set of armour), i decided to try the cloning pits. Of course, my preperation was almost nil. I had 4 speed potions, 4 healing, 2 *healing*, no enlightenment, one staff of perceptions, no food. Luckily, I could continually recharge said staff, and whenever I felt a bit hungry, I went over and bit one of the trolls up top. A few careless close calls. Went into the mid single digits due to holding the arrow key. Gachapin knocked me down to 10 with a toxic breath. After the dust cleared, I had found a bunch of new artifacts : amulet of faramir, helm of hammerhand, some crappy randart armour, a sexy swimsuit (If I was really lucky, there'd still be something sexy in it), that leper mail, thror (which were fantastic until I got the quest reward - guess thats why I always see those boots on other chars), and aranruth.
A whole whack of non-chaos spellbooks. Very dissapointing there. So, I have many of the resistances covered now - anyone have any equipment suggestions?

I used Zacuthra for a bit, but it aggrivated too much. I found out the reason I lived this long was my stealth, so I went back to that lance. I found that fantastic shield floating around somewhere too.
I then went on to the dragons lair and found, in quick succession, the glaive of pain and then the fantastic mace that I'm using now.

Sometime before that I fought the black reaver in the arena and won. The *aquirement* scroll got me Dor-Lomin which completed my base resists for me.

Also, interesting note : I almost died against the reaver, and never went back in. I was down to the low double digits. Then it tells me that I was beaten by the Fenghuang.

Is there a list of stuff you get for the wanted list monsters?

You might consider getting Disenchantment resistance covered soon. With end game caliber items like Anabasis, Shiva's Avatar and Dor-Lomin, it would be a shame if they got messed up. I'm surprised the Black Reaver did not disenchant something!

The Rise and Fall of Microsoft quest has this as its reward, and if you can do the Old Castle, you can certainly manage that quest.

(BTW, if you turn on the abbrev_extra and abbrev_all options (Type '=' then '3') then all of your stuff will get automatically inscribed with %all, and we will be able to tell what you other stuff does. This will save you some typing :)

You don't need to do any other dungeons, but many of them have guardians that will be summoned by the Serpent in the final battle, and this can make things more difficult. Though with your Chaos realm, you will have ample destruction so you could probably just ignore the other dungeons if you like.

But, the most dangerous among the dungeon guardians are:
[1] Great Cthulhu. Now he is tough, and lives at the bottom of R'lyeh. I would hold of on him at the moment if I were you as I don't think you have enough healing resources. Wait for CL50 ...

[2] Null the Living Void. He's not to bad by himself, but he blasts sanity and has passwall, so I usually like to kill him too. He lives at the bottom of the Dark Cave, but man that place is pretty darn annoying to explore. I'd wait for the Jewel before doing that dungeon as you will want to use Enlightenment on every level.

[3] Jormungand the Midgard Serpent. Now he is a load, but he needs water to move. He lives in Numenor, but you might be able to get by ignoring him. If he gets summoned by the Serpent, just teleport away and he will not be able to follow.

[4] Vecna the Emperor Lich. He comes with a posse of Black Reavers so you do not want him getting summoned in the final battle. You could probably handle him now ... he lives at the bottom of the graveyard.

You might consider doing the Castle as well ... Again, you are suitably powered for this at the moment, and Layzaark can be mildly annoying as she has Psycho Spears ...

I generally don't kill any of the other dungeon guardians regularly except maybe Shelob if I'm in need of a poison needle or the Chameleon Lord if I'm playing a non-Beastman. I definitely don't kill the low-level guardians as there is nothing better than having the Serpent summon "guardians" and get Azog and the Minotaur.

That having been said, everyone going after the Serpent should really take out Cthulu first. He's an absolute beast, so having him show up in support of the Serpent really sucks, R'lyeh isn't that deep, so while its challenging, you don't have to dive very far to get to him. Plus, his reward could be handy for the right equipment set-up.

Null can do some annoying stuff when he shows up to support the Serpent, but he's really slow and thus easily escaped and, most importantly, after I struggle all the way to the bottom of the Dark Cave with my first winner, I swore I'd never subject myself to it again.

Jormungand... he's really tough, but not very mobile and has crummy ranged attacks, so I don't see him as a major threat. One thing that's kind of neat is that when the Serpent summons him, a big lake gets created around him.

Vecna's tough and has a rough escort, which is why I usually just plan on *destruction*ing him when he shows up.

Another one that I would add who isn't nearly as tough as these folks, but can be a pest, is Thorondor. He's extremely fast, a prolific summoner, and can teleport you around the battlefield, which can be really bad. I've gotten the other eagle uniques on the justice reward list a lot lately, and he might be worth taking out.

Still waiting for a weapon better than my mace (its pretty decent - 750 damage stock, 1100 cold/fire)

artifacts of note found : Tulkas & Shiva's jacket.

Definitely looking end-game ready. Maybe Fingolfin or Cambeleg for your gloves, but you're basically ready for anything.

I'm surprised Atlas is spanking you so badly. Assuming you're hasted, heroismed, and holy chanted for each fight, you should be noticeably faster than him, hit quite hard, and he should have at least a little difficulty hitting you. On the other hand, Atlas is a pretty darn formidable. Watch out for the earthquakes.

That weapon of yours isn't bad at all. There are better ones out there, but not all that many. Whatever happened to that lance you were using. Its possible it actually does more damage (at the cost of all your mana, of course).
