Ok, here we finally go--an Entro paladin. I'm having a heck of a time getting good gear, but I've made it through the lvl25 quests without too much trouble. I made the mistake of not playing for virtue at the beginning, became evil, and had to deal with massive penalties on my fail rates for a while. Next time I'll know better, since most of my damage is coming from spells right now. If I could get a third attack...or switch off this defender...sigh. "Lucky," he ain't.
Preserve Mode Off is driving me nuts. I had to pass up a vault with at least one artifact in it--the Phial--but hopefully only that one. I'm not sure my psyche is strong enough to keep missing artifacts...if/when this guy dies, I might switch back to the comfort of Preserve.
On 6.11.2005 20:12 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: The Lucky effect on item generation is actually rather small ... something like 2-3% more likely to get an excellent object. My Lucky Android Warrior felt like he noticed a difference, especially w.r.t the towns stocking excellent items, but my main reason for picking the personality was skill based. The stat penalties are really hard to overcome ...
Still, everybody seems to like this personality, so maybe there is a bit more to it than I think :-)

Haven't made too much progress, but I had my first fun experience with Preserve Mode. Got the feeling, but didn't have any ID, didn't have slow digestion to go with regen, and I was low on food. With 1 ration left I scored Theoden and a !Dex. I've lost some damage and ResPois, but the Wis/Con/Telepathy is too good to pass up.
Now to find my super-shield...
On 8.11.2005 03:29 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: I found that turning off Preserve Mode (well, once I realized it was off, anyway) significantly changed my gaming experience. I'm far slower about diving and MUCH more methodical about clearing levels. Picking up Enlightenment helped a lot, though. As then I could at least eye-ball the items that stood any chance of being useful artifacts.
On 8.11.2005 05:56 Elliott946@aol.com wrote: I'm surprised the effect of "Lucky" on item drops isn't bigger. My various Lucky characters have, IMO, gotten noticeably better equipment than average. Of course, the single "Luckiest" character I've ever had was actually Mighty, so there's lots of variability.
I found that Lucky works the best with characters that aren't as constrained by stats. Archers' missle weapon RoF, for example, is determined entirely by their level and equipment. STR helps their damage modifier, but DEX only impacts to-hit. They, and any other missle weapon-based class, are good ones to use Lucky with. Lucky Balrog Ranger is personal favorite of mine, though I've never actually had any success with it.

Well my frustrations with this character may be passing. Tooling around Angband 37 for a while netted me this slick sword which I've not had before...hurray for Werewindle. Now I can wear my RoS+7. Also check my supafly Dragon Shield. Things look a heck of a lot better with 5 attacks (with slays! yippie!), so now I will start taking a crack at Vault, Ang38, etc. Too bad I had to give up telepathy...time for an amulet of telepathy, RNG!
Also, now that I have the hang of Preserve Off, I think I may actually like it more than Preserve On. Knowing which levels to search takes a lot of the frustration out of art-hunting. On the other hand, I haven't lost anything to an impossible vault yet (other than Phial and Tetusga), so maybe I'll change my mind again.
On 10.11.2005 02:37 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Hmm...how did I miss these posts from you guys? I'm certain they weren't here when I last updated. A refresh error? Or senility setting in?
Anyway, with my last Lucky in Heng 1.7.0 I seemed to find tons of great drops. That could be RNG luck as opposed to personality luck, I guess. Anyway, I should stop complaining about drops--just got Hammerhand in a vault. Speaking of which, has anyone else noticed that the super-frequent vault phenomenon is restricted to Angband? I've seen 0 vaults while exploring the Castle repeatedly but around 10 in Angband.

Regarding Preserve off, how many "false positives" are you getting? Part of my bias against this play option stems from days were special = jelly pit. Perhaps I'll give it another go as both you and Elliott seem to be getting along with it :-)
On 10.11.2005 15:21 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: I haven't received any false positives yet. You even get updated level feelings, so you know if you've grabbed all the arts on that level. Grab that helm that turns out to be Hammerhand, and the next time level feeling is updated it drops down to "good feeling" or whatever. It works in reverse too--I killed Judge Death and when his stuff hit the ground, the level feeling went from "excellent" to "special"--and there was Yeduson (ick) waiting to be picked up and smashed against a wall for being a piece of crap. I've worked the special feeling to my advantage 4 times now, and considering how rare Brian has made artifacts, I'd say Preserve Off is almost indispensible to collecting artifacts without going nuts. But again, you have to be well-prepared for a tough vault. I had to teleport several uniques out of the vault that held Hammerhand, and then I had to kill Mother Hydra (she can't be teleported). If you are powerful enough, I'd say that Preserve Off probably makes getting artifacts easier than On does--plus there's the excitement that Elliott mentions of losing something good. End of 2 cents.
Hope the email notifications start working again.

Hard to complain about luck after that smooth operation--easiest time I've had with the clones before, and I walked out with 4 artifacts and Glaurung's corpse. Never in any real danger, and I even took out the ants before they exploded all over the place. I had one gut-check when the Lesser Balrog summoned a Bodak which Werewindle then teleported away so it could start creating an army of demons. Anyway, the take was Glaive, Celegorm, a very nice randart bow and a cheap randart helm. My damage with Glaive is very nice, but I lose a lot of abilities from Werewindle, so we're staying pat for now.
On 11.11.2005 15:18 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Clvl 39 Royal Crypt
Another big boost in power, but very well earned. I forgot that Brian upped the Black Reavers, and the two in the Royal Crypt nearly forced me to abandon the quest. It was a Total War (tm) hammer-fest, but the take was tremendous--the best I've had in Royal Crypt yet. As a result my damage output is nearly doubled and all resists are covered.
Before that was a big party at the Old Castle, which was not nearly as lucrative but did bring in Stormie. Wouldn't that be a fairly sweet weapon to use against the Chemist? Anyway, we're done in Outpost as Brian has deleted the Water Cave quest (in case no one else has noticed that yet). Time to round up the uniques on my wanted list. And where's my Wrath of God?
On 11.11.2005 16:29 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: Nice damage output! But don't you find Werewindle the least bit annoying? Me, I have a love hate relationship with that particular sword, especially if you are trying to take down some beefy unique and it gets teleported away at the last minute, or that uber dragon gets polymorphed when down to 1 star!
Where did you put Feanor and Vorpal Blade? :-)
On 11.11.2005 17:06 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Oh I find it annoying alright. Once my 5d5 longsword drops, Werewindle is getting tossed in a river. But it gives damage, slays, resists, sustains...I can live with the chaos for now. The teleportation is sometimes handy, sometimes a problem, but usually it doesn't matter.
As for Feanor, Anabasis kept that one when he retired. I doubt I'll find it again. Why...does your archer want to borrow them? :)

I will play dueling artifacts with Chris. They may not stack up to Spec and Diatribe, but I found Jack's Cloak from Quachil and Soulsword from Mandor in adjacent rooms. Now I don't have to worry about Werewindle's idiosyncracies...and I have two acquirement scrolls waiting for me in Graveyard and Numenor. Yay!
(But shouldn't Soulsword have vampiric? I should say so...)

I've had some really fun multiple-unique battles, most recently Kenshirou-Bleys-Zhar. That one took all the consumables I had on hand, including most of a staff of speed. The take was poor--Rilia and Fiona, so how do I had these off to my ninja? :) I'm leveling at a terrific rate compared to my last paladin, who was an angel (and I was a rookie).
Now to score some big-big artifacts...Vilya to take out the Arena Shambler would be nice.
On 12.11.2005 18:26 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Clvl 47 Numenor
Just tried Jorgumund for the first time. Wow, that's not going to happen without a source of healing. I got him down two stars before retreating to heal up...and then realized he has quick regen. I think I'll save him (and his Acquirement scroll) for later. From a chamber near the Midgard serpent I did pick up Calris and a special pair of hard leather boots...randarts, sadly. Ummm...found my dragon killer, that's for sure.
Vecna's scroll got me Fingolfin, but for now that's a mere +2 damage at the cost of constitution. Another item on the "later" list. I think it's time to return to Angband for a while, and hope to score WoG and some uber-arts. Where oh where is my Anabasis shield?
On 12.11.2005 20:53 dzhang@its.caltech.edu wrote: Hm... I have an opposite on the Preserve Mode Off, coming from paranoia in the early levels. For most classes that give some form of a detection spell, you can find stairs before you get the level feelings, and it's been killing to realize that I didn't manually wait for the level feeling every time until AFTER I walk down.
BTW, does anyone know how that works, with the semi-permanent levels? I.e. if an artifact is on a level, and you go down, but then go up the same stairs an return to the same level, is it still there, or gone?
On 12.11.2005 23:56 roblt97@hotmail.com wrote: Not sure about that one Dave (perhaps I will save-scum to test it for you). Here's a problem I encountered with Preserve though...
I somehow missed out on Padre, which is too bad but not the end of the world. It must have been when I recalled to R'lyeh to use my acquirement scroll and then left without waiting for a feeling--a practice I've only now realized is terribly stupid with Preserve Off.
But that got me thinking back to a weird thing with Preserve from a while back...it seems that the updated level feeling was "incorrect." I 'k'ed a bunch of stuff and left behind a jo staff marked 'special' (but not picked up or IDed, just left there on the ground). When I picked up another artifact later in the level, the feeling dropped from special to good, even though there was an unID artifact on the ground. There may be a perfectly reasonable explanation for this, but it makes me a little nervous about any level with multiple artifacts.
On 13.11.2005 00:17 chriskousky@hotmail.com wrote: I don't know for sure, but perhaps the Pseudo-id'd {special} artifact is no longer considered when generating the level feeling. This would be a very good feeling. On my dragon fest level, I had to leave dozens of artifacts just laying on the ground. That they would not be considered in the level feeling once identified, or even pseudo-identified would definitely be a plus.
Does anyone know for sure? I am just speculating ...

Ooh, fun story. I dropped into Angband 80ish and hit a greater vault. Shoot, I thought--no Wrath of God (with Armageddon), so I'll have to take a pass on any artifacts...my ubers better not be in there! And then the level feeling kicks in as merely Superb! Hah, just my luck, a greater vault with no artifacts. Well, ok, let's go kill this GWoChaos...and of course he drops Wrath of God for me. Ah, Julian the Punk...he dies and leaves me the Blue DSM artifact (which seems singularly worthless to me). Now here comes a fistful of summons, and the vault has broken out, and Wahha is loose and I'm destructing everything in sight...Ah, good times. Armageddon fills me with a happy glow...is that bad? =)
On the serious side, virtue has a HUGE impact on my fail rates. Thanks to slaughtering sleeping baddies, my alignment was fairly low--only Good--and the fail rates on WoG spells was pretty bad. Now that I've picked it back up to Lawful, the rates are dropping. I'm going to have to really work on getting up to the 700 range of Anabasis, who had terrific fail rate on Armageddon.

Who was wondering where I put Vorpal? =) Clearing that vault was pure pleasure, although I did destroy a new artifact with Armageddon--hermit's purple--and an unIDed amulet (not at artifact though). I left behind the 3d8 mattock guarded by Mephistopheles--talk about a bad risk-reward ratio! My goal now is to clear these vaults until my special shield shows up...I'm dying to know what powers Brian gave it. This new Tulkas is pretty cool, too--but I'm conflicted about what to swap out if/when I find a +2 attacks ring...
Still waiting on Lightning immunity for the arena...

A half-sized bubble-vault on 93 was stuffed with artifacts and uniques. I killed Wahha, Shuma Gorath, Hela, Corwin, and nearly got Daoloth before he teleported away. I destructed Destroyer, Sauron, Gothmog, Azriel, and Cantoras. In addition to some randarts and a few less useful artifacts, I pulled out Bullseye and a PDSM. Now my abyssmal Wisdom and my resists have all been fixed...hurray! I also found this very nice ring of +2 attacks/wizardry which seems perfect for a paladin. Too bad I can't spare the +10 speed ring or Tulkas right now...
