(clevel:24, dlevel:13) Too early to be posting this guy, blah, blah, balh, but I just had to.

The idea was to try and win with an imitator. So far the imitation power has been totally useless (cast fire breath for 8 damage? Whooppiee. I expect it will improve later when he can start casting invulnerability and summon uniques, etc. later, assuming he lives that long) EXCEPT when fighting Wormtongue, because Imitators can pursue teleporting uniques, just like Keepers of Secrets do to you. That could be useful later on.

The plan was really pretty mundane. He'd stockpile magic whistles and use them all the time, calling up hordes of pets, which monsters would slaughter, allowing TwistedMirror to then imitate those spells. Rampant pet slaughter isn't perhaps a great plan, but it was the best I could do. For fun, I decided to make him a Beastman, because I hadn't really played one before and I thought the mutations might help.

Well, lets just say that turned out to be an understatement. He started off with an elephant trunk as his opening mutation, which was fine. Sometime during the Thieves Den quest, he got a Chaos Deity (Pyaray) who became enamored of giving TwistedMirror mutations as well, and you can see the result below. Level 24 and he's had 16 mutations already. 14 are on the list below plus he had the trunk replaced by a beak, and then finally he was turned into a Cyclops.

Considering how darn impressive some of those mutations are (telepathy! dispel evil!), I'm just as happy he's not a beastman anymore since there can't be that many more good mutations left. Of course, Cyclops isn't exactly my first choice for new race, but you have to take what the fates give you.

He's been pretty lucky with equipment finds (that crossbow was in the Vapor Quest of all places, Cambeleg came from a scroll of acquisition, the armor turned up during the Orc Quest, and his weapon was sitting in the Yeek lair) and if he only had some mana to power all those mutations, he'd been an absolute juggernaut at this point.

Oh what's up with that polymorph self mutation? I'm dying with curiosity, but also terrified of what it might do.

On 21.7.2005 16:41 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Just played with polymorph self for a bit and, umm, well THAT was interesting. I should have kept notes on what happened because I think he switched races from Cyclops to half-ogre to half-troll to dwarf to shadow fairy to golem to human to vampire. Plus, his stats kept swapping around and new mutations piled up at a frightening rate.

He lost the "teleport short distances one", but picked up all kinds of other stuff and that list is now 23 mutations long.

Since he's finally got his 2 bad stats into INT and WIS (I would have preferred WIS and CHR, which is where it started before he became a Cyclops, but I can live with this) and I'm starting to get terrified of how long his list of mutations is, I think he'll stay a vampire for a while. Time to go get rLight from somewhere.

Part of the reason he had so much going on was that when he changed to a race with a higher EXP requirement, his level would go down. Then when he changed back to one with a lower EXP requirement, his level would go back up and Pyaray would reward him. So in addition to everything else, he also got a club of slaying. He's now level 23 and I think he'll live with it.

I definitely should have written those polymorphed races down.

Yes - Beastmen are very interesting to play. I think I read somewhere (in the spoiler?) that they have a bettter chance to getting good mutations.... In any case that seems to have been the case with my Beastman Beastmaster. He also has the polymorph self mutation but I haven't played with it because he's got a ton of mutations already and only one of them is moderately bad..

If I win with him (big IF) I plan on playing with him to see just how many mutations I can give him... I think I also read somewhere that Beastmen are prone to getting the Polymorph self mutation ( but hey I could've just dreamt it ).

Are you enjoying playing an Imitator - I read the description for them and thought it would require a fair bit of patience...

Well, so far she's still playing like a nerfed warrior (not that I've actually seriously played a Heng Warrior, Samurai, or Berserker, but I've played them in other Bands), but with her tremendous physical stats she's a powerhouse in melee and that crossbow packs a wallop for ranged fighting.

She's actually clevel:31 now and down to about dlevel:40 (Chaugn Faun was the level 38 monster, which would normally have been an easy draw, except that it started awake right in the middle of a huge room with a pack of mature dragons right next to it. TwistedMirror fought through the dragons and got Chaugn Faun down to 3 stars when it summoned, getting a small army of medium strength monsters, plus Rolento who had a bunch of mid-30s humans for escorts. Took a long time to fight through them all.) and useful imitate spells are just starting to show up.

The trick is using the spells before they go away. Giganto breathed toxic waste during a recent battle, forcing TwistedMirror to teleport away and heal. By the time she got back to Giganto, she had lost it (which sucked. I was looking forward to using 'breath toxic waste - damage:600').

However, thinking back on the battle, it might not have been time that made the ability go away. On the way back, TwistedMirror ran into a Revenant which cast a few firebolts. When she got back to Giganto, she had two imitate options, both of which were firebolts.

Still, there are some nifty side benefits. One is that you can imitate non-offensive spells, too. Summon, of course, but also healing, haste, etc. Another bonus is that you get to see exactly how much everything does. If you check the imitate options you have, you can see how much the healing is for, how much each indiividual breath or bolt or whatever did, because that's how much your imitation will do.

(Clevel:31, dlevel:41) Clevel:31 and 663 hp. Life is good, but overconfidence is becoming a big threat.

Found Hagen's spear and the Soulsword. Decided to go with Sting over the Soulsword because she already had most of the high resists covered and while Sting does less damage, the +CON and rLight are more important. Dual-wielding with Hagen because running around at -2 speed just sucks.

She'd been piledriving every unique she's seen (Kavlax, Mandor and the Bokrug together, and Jurt on the last trip), but I couldn't shake the feeling that with just a couple small tweaks she could take a big step forward. Then Mandor dropped Isildur, which freed up both ring slots and covered Sound and Nexus (though losing rDisenchant).

That created lots of ring options. Go with rLight and swap in the Soulsword? Decided instead to go with the ring of +CON, the ring of damage (and dragonfire!), and stick with Sting, which brought her CON up to 18/220, and giving her the aforementioned 663 hp.

One problem with playing a Beastman is that from her recent CON gains I think her max CON is 18/70 or 18/80, and though she had a potion of new life, it would also wipe out her mutations. The imitator powers are nice sometimes, but the real source of her power is all those mutations. At this stage of the game, if I had to choose between them, I totally take the mutations over the imitator powers.

(clevel:33, dlevel:42) Breezed through the Cloning Pits. It helped that a gorgon was the toughest random monster. My last few times through have been horrible, either dying or just barely winning a massive slugfest, so this was quite nice. It was a combination of the monsters being fairly helpful and TwistedMirror just overwhelming them.

TwistedMirror just walked in and hammered everything into the ground. Started with the lower monsters and only the Dagons took more than two or three rounds to kill. Almost nothing woke up before it was attacked, none of the Gachapins breathed or summoned at all, and with the ring of extra shots, the crossbow averaged 279 damage/round, so things at range went down fast, too.

Once the lower monsters were all gone, she picked off the Toms and Fasolts with her crossbow until it got boring, then just killed them all in melee. I brough in a few healing potions and 50 CCW potions, just in case of trouble, but she never needed to drink any of them, or even rest, for that matter. Just a few speed potions for the lower monsters and then heroism and holy chant to help cover the still shakey to-hit.

Back to Angband, now.

Ok, I now see the value of being an imitator. She's in the late 40s in Angband and has just started fighting a Spectral Tyrannosaurous when a group of bloodletters come up behind her. They're not a serious problem, but it'll take 10 rounds to get rid of them, and that's way too long.

Earlier, for fun, TwistedMirror had bought a bunch of magic figurines of black ants. She now takes one and tosses it next to the spectral t. rex, which promptly melts the ant with a poison breath. I check the power listing, and, sure enough, there's the option for "breathe poison gas - damage:781". BOOM. Buh-bye, little bloodletters.

I've also just realized that TwistedMirror has hypnotic gaze. This could be a lot of fun.

But otherwise, I must say wow! You really got off to a fast start on this one ... Well Done!

I've never successfully used a capture ball before, so while the thought occured to me, I kept forgetting to do it. You're right. I should capture something big and nasty and run with it.

Haven't tried using double revenge yet, either. The problem is that it costs 100, and Imitators don't have mana, so that's 100 hp. TwistedMirror has a ton of hp for her level, but that's a lot even for her.

Plus, so far imitated attacks tend to fall into two categories - totally overwhelming (like the ones I've mentioned) and largely irrelevant (most of the powers she can choose from are things like blink-self and cause moderate wounds for 36 damage). I like to use the overwhelming powers to clear out groups of mid-level supporting monsters, because the big beastie that originally used it probably resists the attack and has enough hp that even if I double the attack it won't help enough (Giganto probably had 1800 hp left to do the 600 damage breath. Since he resists poison, it'd do 200 damage to him. Doubled is 400. That's nice, and I can see circumstances where it would be worth it, but its not the 1-hit kill you'd want in exchange for 100 hp.) and if you're using it on supporting monsters, the damage is more than enough already.

That having been said, if you capture, oh, say a GWoP in a capture ball and then double its shards breath against something that doesn't have rShards... well, now you're talking.

On 23.7.2005 04:21 blackreaver368@yahoo.com wrote:
Hmmm ... wow, 100hp is pretty steep. Probably best to lay off. How's the failure rate?

You probably already know this, but a Capture Ball really only has a chance of working if your opponent is down to 1 star (unless you are a BeastMaster). Once something is your pet, however, you may capture it at full health and carry it around with you.

(clevel:36, dlevel:61) TwistedMirror's fast progress crashed to a halt against Kenshirou, who was just too much for her to handle. Even fully powered up and with Kenshirou softened up with crossbow bolts, she just couldn't go toe-to-toe with him.

Frustrated, I decided to clean up a few quests and then try the Old Castle. It went surprisingly fast. The Iron Lich and Greater Titans even woke up (peroidically going berzerk has been a bit of a hassle since it wrecks her stealth when it happens) and came after her, plus they all summoned a few times, getting a dark elven sorcerer and a few other mid-grade nastiest. TwistedMirror just picked her spots and crushed them all. Go Go would have been a major disappointment if the fight hadn't gone so smoothly.

I felt a little better after that, and decided to go catch a pet. While stalking Brand, TwistedMirror managed to catch a Shoggoth, which was nice, because I hate them, though they have no imitatable powers. TwistedMirror and Shoggoth made short work of Brand (actually, the Shoggoth was quite capable of killing Brand by itself. Those things are nasty.) who dropped his crossbow.

Decided to dump the current randart and go with Brand. I decided that 75 HP and -4 STR was worth +10 speed. On the next trip down, the Shoggoth perished while fighting Ulik and Beld in quick succession, but TwistedMirror was able to replace with with a slower, but much sturdier and more useful pet: a GWoV. Hopefully the dlevel:62 quest monster doesn't resist poison.

Oh, also, TwistedMirror got Zantetsuken the old-fashioned way. Ran into Ishikawa Goemon at about dlevel:50 in Angband and killed him pretty easily. I had back-to-back characters scum for him and kill him, only to have him not drop Zantetsuken, and then another character spend an hour scumming for him to no avail, so I decided not to go out of my way to hunt for him with TwistedMirror (besides, its not like she needed any help).

"Oh, no, they say he's got to go
Go go Godzilla!"

Down goes Godzilla! The big lizard went breathing happy about mid-way through, but fortunately I had decided to use the Soul Sword instead of Crisdurian (paired with Zantetsuken) for this fight, just in case Godzilla decided to breath disenchantment. Which he did. About 5 frickin' times. Fortunately for TwistedMirror, Godzilla seemed more interested in beating on Bruiser, so she escaped the brunt of the melee damage. Fighting uniques is much easier when you use the buddy system.

TwistedMirror's kit made some big strides forward as Godzilla dropped Loehngrin (which is rather less valuable if you're a vampire) and Thror, plus Glaaki (who TwistedMirror had killed earlier on the level) dropped the Jewel of Judgement.

Sadly, because TwistedMirror seriously struggles to hit opponents with AC 160+, she had to use Berserk for the fight, meaning she didn't get to imitate any of Godzilla's nifty breath attacks. Maybe next time.

To recap some previous action, Stinky the GWoV ended up a disappointment. It tanked nicely, but its offense was much less than I had hoped. It got trapped between Jisisil of Ice and a hostile Ent, and the two eventually killed it.

TwistedMirror had to flee that engagement as Saruman and a Cherub got into a summoning battle nearby, and all sorts of random monsters came spilling over just as the fight with Jisisil got going.

While healing up, TwistedMirror captured a demi-lich, which was better offensively, but proved surprisingly frail when fighting a group of greater undead. It didn't even live long enough for me to name it. Finally, TwistedMirror managed to capture a Bloodthirster, named Bruiser, and that guy rocked.

When Jisisil was finally lured away, the Bloodthirster charged forward to attack it, while TwistedMirror swung around the side to attack Jisisil from behind. I thought Jisisil would slaughter Bruiser with summons and breaths, but I needed the distraction.

By the time TwistedMirror got there, Jisisil was already down to 8 stars while Bruiser hadn't lost any. Jisisil went down quickly once he was getting beaten on from both sides.

I've never really used pets or summoned monsters before. They sure make the game a lot easier. Its too bad Bruiser is useless for Imitator powers, but he's WAY to effective in melee to trade away.

Found a use for 'Double Revenge'. Back in town after killing Godzilla, TwistedMirror found she could still use a disenchantment breath (for about 450 damage). So after healing, she went into the arena to face her next opponent, a Nightwalker, which is a tough opponent, but only has like 1800 hp and lacks rDisenchantment. Her opening move was to 'Double Revenge' the disenchantment breath on the Nightwalker and the finish it off with the Soulsword.

On the bright side, TwistedMirror captured a Cyberdemon (named BFG) and I've had the fun of getting to imitate BFG's rocket attacks. BFG probably doesn't match Bruiser in melee effectiveness (Bruiser was entombed by rock while fighting Lems the Cyborg), but imitating that rocket attack makes it worth while.

And that was all she wrote for TwistedMirror. Dead while fighting, of all things, an Archpriest. Well, ok, it was a Ice Wyrm that landed the killing breath, but the Archpriest summoned it.

Sadly, I just didn't take the Archpriest seriously, and it summoned and summoned and summoned some more. Rather than really taking them out, I played with the various powers and tried to get a worthwhile new pet (BFG died fighting Gerard. Entombed in rock, just like Bruiser.).

When TwistedMirror got badly damaged, I took that one extra turn to capture something rather than teleporting away or healing, and a bunch of things all decided to breath or cast spells on TwistedMirror all at once. I was so surprised and annoyed that I failed to get the dump.

I guess the two big lessons from this are: take your opponents seriously (duh) and level 97 of Angband probably isn't a good place for level 40 characters to hang out.
