(clevel:20, dlevel:18) Ok, way too early to be posting this guy (and he even failed the quest for Shagrat! Oh, the shame! Archers don't handle big packs of monsters terribly well. Tentaclehead fired off all his arrows, but Shagrat wasn't quite dead and his pack wasn't quite gone, and an un-ID'ed scroll proved to be curse weapon. That's twice in recent memory I've had characters fail quests because of blasted weapons.), but look at the wands and staffs in his house: *Destruction*, Mana Storm, and Rockets!?! Found all 3 of 'em sitting on the floor on an otherwise unremarkable level 14 in Angband. Quite surprising.

After multiple recent failures with level 40+ characters of various sorts, I've decided to get back to my strength, Archers, in an attempt to get another winner. To make it interesting, I decided to see how Lazy characters do. My only winner so far was an Archer (who was Lucky) and if not for finding the Cloak of Jack of Shadows in the Cloning Pits, detection would have been far and away his biggest problem.

Since with a Lazy character I can't count on ridiculously good equipment finds, I'm going with a Mindflayer, in part because they eventually get innate ESP (yes, Spectres do too, but Spectres feel too Munchkinish for me. Maybe after I fail a few more times I'll give 'em a shot.), thus solving the detection problem, and in part because I just felt like playing a Mindflayer.

(clevel:28, dlevel:23) Slow going with this guy for a while. The RNG was really messing with him. The short bow (+4, +2) he got for doing the thieves den quest was the only enchanted bow or crossbow I was able to find anywhere, despite repeated round-trips of the weapon stores and BMs. It was just horrible, plus no good melee weapons dropped, either. At level 25, his best weapon was a (+4,+3) lead-filled mace because the short bow, crappy as it was, actually got disenchanted so it became even worse.

Finally, around clevel 27, the RNG made it up to him when he current delightful bow came up for sale in one of the BMs. Looking at the dump, you can see exactly when it happens, because all of a sudden Tentaclehead does a whole bunch of quests he just hadn't had the firepower to do. Life became much nicer after that, and his melee pretty much faded away to nothing.

Tried the Dragon Lair a few times, and it wasn't pretty. You're seriously taking your life in your hands down there if you don't have a renewable source of doubling your base resists and ideally at least temporary ESP. ESP will be taken care of shortly, but unless he finds Colluin, Tentaclehead is out of luck on the resists, so the Dragon Lair may not be doable.

Instead, I'm thinking of doing the Cloning Pits ridiculously early, like right now. He's got the offense, and while he doesn't have rPoison, he'll bring the staff of mana to nuke the Gachapins quickly, and then he'll just keep his distance from the Dagons. Should be doable.

That'll be covered by that trump main gauche. It'll be along as a swap, along with the ring of levitation.

Elliot.

My character has been doing the Dragon's Lair without Colluin or res potions - He's been swapping in ring of Flame/Frost/Acid when required against the requisite Wyrm and levelling + treasure was quite nice. Sounds a bit silly but if you've got telepathy it works quite well. Recently picked up ring of Lightning + Mook (activates for res: cold). I only mention it because my character has basically done it from chlvl 30-40 without any major problems so you should be able to do it. With the gear he picked up he's now diving through the lair successfully.

On 12.7.2005 17:00 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Wow, that's a really inventory-intensive way of solving the problem, though it would certainly work. Tentaclehead has only found a ring of flames, so far. Maybe if he finds a couple of the other types he'll give it a shot.

Currently in the Cloning Pits and its not going very well. The Its, Ant Queens, and a Bokrug are dead, but that stupid Bokrug summoned a greater basilisk (and some lesser stuff) and the Ant Queens managed more summoning than I had hoped, and most of Tentaclehead's ammo is sitting underneath a mass of red ants locked in battle with a chaos spawn and some cave trolls.

If the ants are cleared (by Tentaclehead or the trolls) and he can get to that ammo, then he can still finish the quest. Otherwise, he's probably out of luck.

On 12.7.2005 17:23 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
(clevel:28, dlevel: Cloning Pits) Well, its academic now. A couple Dungeon Cleaners woke up and were threatening to destroy a cache of ammo. Tentaclehead lured them away from it and tried to melee one of them, but he really wasn't up to it and teleported away, landing amidst the red ants.

I realized at that point that he was going to fail the quest and was gloomily pondering what to do next so I didn't realize how badly injured Tentaclehead was. That's how it works. If you start thinking about anything other than keeping the character alive, your character's life span can be measured with an egg timer.

Just imagine if Jack of Shadows was in the quest as well, or Yibb-Tstll (or both of them at once), or Utgard Loke, or a Greater Titan, or Khamul the Easterling who is happy to summon Dracoliches and Zephyr Lords that are happy to fill the quest with gravity and inertia hounds, or ... ;-)

I've had enough bad luck with the random monsters generated on the quest to wait a while, even if I think it is doable. Unless I've had too many "Pints of Fine Ale" ...

On 13.7.2005 13:55 Elliott946@aol.com wrote:
Yeah, every once in a while that quest goes smoothly, but it often turns into a brutal endurance match, even for characters who I think can breeze through it.

I've gotten Greater Titans and Malekith down there before, but my personal worst was probably Garm. Managed to beat all three, though for the life of me I can't recall how I beat Garm. I think he got bogged down with Fire Ants and by the time I got to him he only had 3 or 4 stars left. Getting Khamul or Jack of Shadows would pretty much be a worst case scenario that I've thankfully never encountered.

Funny. This guy didn't get any of those. The worst "extra" monster that showed up was a Chaos Spawn, yet the quest totally squashed him anyway.

I should have said "A" Greater Titan. I've only run into one, and it was only once.
