My first real foray into Unangband. It's a nice game that is starting to take real shape - loads of cool terrain features and levels (in campaign) that really make this worth playing.

But it's damn hard. The ID system is a bit complicated and annoying, and the player character has been toned down (unlike say, the uber-god you can be in Heng). Some minor quibbles, but the campaign mode keeps me playing and keeps things exicting.

I am at a loss for finding any decent gear though; I'm sort of scumming around looking to establish even some basic resistance and excellent / superb gear.

Hrm. These Barrow Downs seem to go on forever. Is there an end?

The main problem I seem to be having is finding any decent gear. Most of the stuff I pick up on even excellent levels is {very good} swords or armour that fail to contend with my dagger. Needless to say, however, levelling is a doddle.

The Barrow Downs go a lot deeper than some other nearby dungeons. Consider a trip east of Bree to the Troll Forest or Misty Mountains, where the inhabitants tend to carry some better kit. I'm not promising the kind of weapons that Bilbo and co. found on Tom and his friends though, but I usually pick up some resistance kit there.

Grrr. Black Rider. From out of bloody nowhere. So angry right now.

This is an excellent variant. Two things that need fixing, big time, though:

a) The navigation system is wack. Travel options just pop out of nowhere then hide again. Utterly bizzare. Some coherence / spoilers would be nice.

b) Lessen the ease with which acid creatures damage armour - an encounter with a pack of Acid Hounds with some resistance can take off 6 AC at a time.

c) The identification system is utterly insane. Too many confusing scrolls. ID is far too expensive and Lore / *ID* non-existent.
