I did the rational thing of holding out with abilities until I found any good items to commit to, and I did find a defender sword with low weight rather early. I'm afraid I wasted too much time dallying around midlevels, should have dived to near-bottom ASAP. The Will-build is pretty convenient with monsters not giving any xp later and being more of an annoyance to waste time on, I'd went for Opportunist late which was very fun. I broke at some point and bought Inner Light - does it help reveal dark monsters, or does it just improve dark resistance?
If I was lucky to find an armor-piercing weapon, I'd might be able to take on Morgoth. I searched around on 1000' but only found a great pair of gauntlets.
I'm curious about a smithing build but confused about how exactly are you supposed to get Smithing to high enough levels to make, say, 20+ skill requirement items? Or the fabled {whatever} of speed?

Inner Light does help reveal dark monsters by increasing your light level which counters some of the darkness. So you'll be able to see further into darkness created by enemies. I think it also helps against light vulnerable monsters like Orcs and Trolls but I'm not that sure.
For smithing it helps to keep some Grace items around or even smithing some Grace items yourself (e.g. +1 Amulet, +2 Grace Robe, +1 Spear of Vanyar). You can also get +1 Grace Abilities from Perception, Smithing and Song and +1 to smithing from racials like Feanor or Dwarves. There are even some advocates for "Strength in Adversity" smithing, where you purposely lower your health to below 25% before smithing. But yeah, one of the main challenges is to put points into Smithing without losing too much combat power.
Another popular smithing strategy is to smith Gloves with the 'Expertise' Ability after taking 'Artifice' so you can save a decent amount of xp.
