This was a fun one! My first song of mastery build win, my first time killing Morgoth with Angrist, my first time killing a unique monster without ever seeing it, my first time winning without being stat drained a single time during the game (this one is a maybe, might have done it before), and my first time finding the Mithril Corslet 'Starlight' and Dwarf Mask of the Dwarrowdelf. For having played Sil for quite a few years now, it's quite astonishing how many firsts I ran into this game. Sindar Doriath was also the final race/house combo I needed to win to win at least once on all combos in Sil.

According to http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=6990, nobody's ever found and won with Starlight in their inventory before, but that was from 2014, so I don't know if that's changed. Still, pretty rare find!

I killed Shelob without ever seeing her because I didn't have enough light to reveal her. There was a Gwathrauko next to her that I couldn't see either and was helping cloak her. I used monsters' evasion to determine their identities, and couldn't come up with which monster had 20 evasion. Both Gwathraukos and (I just learned) Ancient Amethyst Serpents have 18 evasion. I have no clue if I received the experience for encountering Shelob. I guess that also holds true for the countless Gwathraukos I killed without ever seeing them.

Turn count wasn't so great because I played very conservatively and repeated the early floors. This was my 6th attempt, and the prior attempts died before 400 feet because this was basically an Edain Haleth when it came to combat stats. A Haleth has a 2-3-3-1 start, while my Sindar Doriath has a 2-3-3-4 start. To reliably survive the randomness and difficulty spike of 300-450 feet, I wanted ideally a fine weapon, a Gondolin weapon, or additional protection or evasion. My time spent repeating the early floors didn't pay off unfortunately, so I think if I had an unlucky spawn on one of the subsequent floors, I could have easily died.

I used Psi's GoodNight as a template for planning my build, and tweaked it as needed. Evasion is useless in a song of mastery build, so you want to minimize investing in it if you can, or so I thought. Turns out, if you aren't careful, you will still take hits here and there, such as turning a blind corner and getting breathed on by a dragon or running into a vampire lord, so having some evasion helps prevent you from being one shot. With 3 constitution, you definitely don't want that, so I was perfectly happy putting in more points in evasion. 12 was what GoodNight ended the game with, and I thought 12 felt the most natural. Before song of mastery comes online, you need to be able to survive giants and snow trolls without it, and 10 evasion is a bit sketchy for doing so. Song of Elbereth won't help you escape trolls either. Now if I had found an early crown of command, things would have been different.

Difficulty-wise, it was definitely toughest before I got song of mastery online, after which difficulty decreased steadily. You can use Song of Elbereth to bail out of some bad encounters, like if you get surrounded in a labyrinth in an unwinnable fight. This build is very strong once it gets going. It's easy to screw up and die instantly, sure, but if you're careful, every encounter is trivialized. I had to be very careful where I stepped, play extra carefully around venomous monsters since I lacked rPois, sing mastery when turning corners, and calculate how much chance there is for each monster to resist my song, but the end result is that every opponent is rendered helpless. Song of Mastery lets you kill enemies you can't see because they can't take advantage of your halved evasion when they can't act. Two handing weapons usually costs you protection from shields or to-hit chance, but protection matters little when your opponents can't attack and to-hit chance matters little when you can just swing again, for the cost of 1 voice. And if your opponents can't move, resistances don't matter as much either. Fighting cats with song of mastery active feels especially unfair.

Some hiccups this run include having my brass lantern go as low as 776 turns on 500 feet before finding more oil, being denied any worthwhile artefact weapon options until very late (would have had to face Morgoth with a +2 deathblade), the game crashing on 600 feet forcing me to replay some turns and replicate the original game state (actually had to throw myself onto a false floor tile intentionally for that), and nearly dying to a shadow spider/lurking horror/shadow bat on 550 feet due to lack of light. I was a bit annoyed that I just flat out could not find good weapon options, but honestly, the RNG has been quite kind this game, from the early kite shield of Hador to the numerous !voices to finding Fingon, amulet of grace, jewelled crown of grace, Nimphelos, all superb items for a song of mastery build.

For the throne room, I snuck in the hidden corridor on the left, past the silent watcher, to reach Morgoth. I forgot that if you walk right up to him, he then breaks tension. If I had known, I would have buffed up beforehand. Morgoth didn't get to earthquake, swing Grond, or act even once. Gorthaur had a little more agency, but that was only because I didn't want to kill him where there was no room for him to drop his loot. I had +14 to-hit bonus from concentration due to having 28 perception, which allowed me to reach +38 to-hit.

I toyed with the idea of investing some experience in smithing, but ultimately decided not to do it because I wanted this character to be a pure singer. Maybe one day I'll do a hybrid build. I actually think it might be the stronger build because you get so much smithing bonus from innate grace and Song of Aule that you really don't need to invest that much experience into it for it to be effective.

Some things I noticed about song of mastery. Concentration and song of mastery complement each other very well, since monster AI will tend to swap monsters in and out at chokepoints to break concentration, but the song prevents this behavior. Monsters which are within walls (and perhaps doors) are not affected by song of mastery. Ideally you want 2 sources of free action, since certain late-game dragons can entrance you from outside the range of your song or light, thereby negating your already poor evasion and potentially one-shotting you through your protection.

At 52 turns from encountering Morgoth to slaying him, Leina is my 2nd fastest slayer of Morgoth (-1.11 z-score), losing out only to Echor, her fellow Sindar who cheats by using a bow. At 38 turns from finding crown to slaying him, Leina is ranked 6th (-0.32 z-score), behind Ivrath, Echor, Mirim, Tauros, and Perch. Both metrics can be thrown off though. The first by catching a glimpse of Morgoth way before you break tension, and the second by rubble concealing the crown until Morgoth is already near death.

Checking after the win, I was a bit shocked to find that I didn't miss a single artefact this game. 22/22 found. I've been false floored, I've skipped islands that would have forced me to jump down chasms afterwards, and I've been blocked by rubble, so definitely pretty lucky there.

I ended up with ~9k experience pool, which could have been applied to smithing or adding more song. Didn't really need it (or momentum to be honest), so I chose not to spend it.

Random shower thoughts...trying to imagine how song of mastery works is comical to me. The monsters can't attack you or move, but their evasion remains, so they are just standing there trying to dodge your aggressions. Dodging without being able to move your feet seems impossible, but they're pretty good at it... And what would happen if two characters sang song of mastery to each other? Neither would be able to move and it'd come down to a staring contest?
