Dicked around for like 60mins/1000 turns being chased around in the side corridor, killing off a few adds. Didn't really get what I was supposed to do next. Stopped being as careful with health mgmt etc and got crit by a garden variety Troll Guard. Didn't feel bad about it, just sort of confused about what I'm supposed to do in the throne room! Supposed to wait until V becomes unwary, then take a shot at him with my bow to knock off his crown? idk? Also, did all the creatures keep becoming Unwary because of my Vanish ability and high Stealth, or is that just how they behave on the final level, to give you a chance to sneak about?
Overall, character felt okay but not super powerful. Started as an Elbereth Archer, but stopped pushing Song up my midgame so that part of the kit stopped being effective the last 200ft. Looking at it now, I think I took too many abilities, and not enough Archery + Evasion.  So many things I had to kite around the dungeon to land a kill. Think it didn't help that I couldn't find good arrows until the throne room.
Also - Listen with high persecption is sooooo powerful, omg. That plus Delving = having a permanent radar on any nearby threats, and knowing how to get out at all times.

Against Morgoth, key is to hit him hard enough a couple of times so the crown drops, prise a Sil and get out. Arrows are fine for this. He doesn't attack you until you're quite close so you have time to scout and quaff all your buffs before unloading on him.
Free action is strongly recommended to counter slowing and earthquakes, and lots of Quickness. A melee weapon able to do enough damage to the crown is also a good shout - Angrist is the gold standard, but in general having a sharp or large weapon is advisable so you don't have to take too many attempts.
Elbereth will buy you some space while trying to cut out a Sil but won't chase away everything in the throne room so you may need to use your quickness to lead the mob away then nip back to the crown.
Listen is obscenely good.
On 21.3.2023 13:42 squeezy_hotbreath wrote: Thanks for your explanation Quirk.
Can you tell me more about the Unwary mechanic I'm the throne room, if monsters behave differently than normal?
On 21.3.2023 19:28 Quirk wrote: Sure.
So the throne room is set up for you to walk right up to Morgoth and challenge him face to face. Once you get close enough to him, he'll issue the challenge and charge into combat. Assuming you do just walk up to him, none of his minions will attack until he does.
However attacking any of the enemies in the throne room, or being seen to pick anything up, will break the truce. You will then immediately have to deal with all the enemies the throne room has to offer converging on you. Of course if nobody sees you steal anything, it didn't happen.
You can explore a bit first safely as long as you don't get too close to him.
You can sing without breaking the truce. The classic and canonical pacifist route involves singing Song of Lorien to lull all the enemies to sleep. Morgoth will drop the crown when he falls asleep and it can then be cut for sils, though this tends to wake him back up.
In your case, your ideal throneroom assault for this build probably looks like:
1) walk down the throneroom until you can see Morgoth a few tiles away
2) quaff a bunch of strength, dex, con and grace potions
3) down the quickness last because you need them to last longest
4) sing Elbereth
5) start hitting him with arrows of piercing - and if you still have difficulty penetrating him hard enough to drop the crown, a couple of Deadly Hail hits would assuredly shake it loose
(Horn of Force can also dislodge it).
At this point he should be more or less on top of you, with the crown lying just behind him. Using your quickness, kite him away and then dodge back toward the crown. Whatever weapon you've brought as a sil-cutter gets employed now to hack a silmaril out the crown. You ideally want to weather as few direct hits from Morgoth as you can. His court will also be trying to get in on the action.
Once you get a silmaril, you can up the stakes by going for another, or just flee with the one you've got. Back to the stairs you go, or any other stairs you may have found in your explorations.
At this point the chase is on, and you have to get out before he kills you.
