Been trying to do a run where I never increase any base skill above my archery... Which was tricky when I didn't find a bow until something like 200/250ft!

Early-game was a lot of hiding and hoping for good luck with poor melee, but once I found the 3d5 battle axe and got versatility I started being able to make better progress.

I've killed every unique I've found so far, but I think that'll end now - even regular giants have come close to killing me a couple of times, so the giant uniques stand a good chance of ending the run.

Argh, that moment when you look at your dump post-death and realise 'Wait, I didn't mean to be using that weapon!'. And not long after finding Angrist, too! What a shame. Archery-focused builds are definitely more difficult in this version than they were in 1.4.

Really found myself missing the ability that automatically identifies things, particularly in terms of equipment (Alchemy wasn't a very attractive proposition, as the herbs and staffs were relatively simple to ID). Why was that removed?

You can automatically identify equipment with Enchantment. The rough thinking was that smiths should be able to identify enchantments they are capable of creating themselves and it split the identification more usefully than the old Lorekeeper/Loremaster which took up two skills in the powerful Perception tree. If you're not using other smithing it's a fairly reasonable one-time XP cost.

Archery has been made somewhat more difficult over the past few releases and I've balanced it with the expectation that at least one of sprinting, stealth or Elbereth will likely be in play alongside it. That's not to say I'm not happy to see other builds, but the archery does less carrying than it used to.
