Hador's strength profile is kinda misleading. You play the first few levels like a Noldor, just one or two shotting everything. Then suddenly you goof up once, have bad luck and get a poor spawn on a new floor, or encounter a string of lucky monster rolls and find yourself dead. My last Hador died in one turn from near full health by Easterling archer fire.

I've been a lot more patient with clearing whispering shadows. I'd guess a good 33%-50% of my runs die to those things. Wish there was an option to just whacking at things and not move if there's nothing there. Most deaths are me thinking there's a whispering shadow there, trying to attack it, and walking into a room where 5 whispering shadows are waiting to get a free shot at me.

Been finding inner light almost mandatory. Most times you only have brass lantern, which is radius 2 light, plus staff of light. No helmet or crown of brilliance yet. Sometimes you can supplement your light radius with a slaying weapon. That should be enough for one whispering shadow...but whispering shadows are rarely alone. Inner light never loses its value until after you extract a sil, by which point your game is basically won, so not a bad investment.
