For more thematics, most of the best ego armours I found until CL13 were not the kind I could absorb; reflection and resistance shields. The combo breaker was a pair of stealth boots, and then resists slowly started accumulating. First 'slaying' gloves of the game were Pippin, at DL30 and CL23, and it wasn't long after I found three Charisma potions; it's almost like the game was telling me this Rag is for dance, not fighting.

First artifact body armour was Hithlomir, during the second session of this game, for the first rag-pip of rAcid (when at two of rCold), rDark, and rNether, and so that was finally enough stuff worth mentioning to make a post.

Of course, I am now in the most dangerous stage of the game for rags, around 28-33: when the rag is strong enough that you feel like it should be able to go deeper, but doing so still involves meeting things you have no good answer for; when you're beginning to grow weary with the character, and are likely to start making attention-deficit mistakes; and when you have about the stats and equipment bonuses approaching a normal character, but none of the abilities or class features to match.

It occurs to me this character might actually be easier for someone who is familiar with roguelikes, but not as familiar with this particular one.

Picked up my first point of speed from Boldor and Orfax (one of those), last essence for rFear on some randart boots, and then in three floors casually picked up all the non-quest Levitation essence needed to get the pip, so I finally headed on to Lonely Mountain and Morivant (only getting slightly distracted at the Mountain, and doing some quests at the town).

First slaying gloves of the game came from the Black Market, and since I haven't increased STR/DEX very much they only increased melee damage by 5— yet still, progress. Second slaying gloves came immediately immediately after from Orc Tunnels quest, and even had the exact same Slays (Animal, Human), increasing melee by another 3.

Total melee damage eventually went up to 53 (partly due to Lonely Mountain stat potions, and partly due to buying more slaying gloves and slaying armour from the Black Market), but the steady improvement of devices was more significant; two detection rods, two total Beam of Light rods, Acid/Fire rods at decent damage/charges, and enough Cure Wounds staves that I think it's fine if I carry and lose one. (Also technically gained decent rBase, but it isn't yet enough to change my tactics or engagement decisions.)

Oh, and Lonely Mountain provided two New Life potions when I haven't seen a single Self Knowledge yet.

(Finally, I've been careful not to go past DL33 in Lonely Mountain, since I'm try to reduce the chances of an Ethereal Dragon spawning even in a vault. Still no See Invisible or rLight!)

Spent several teleports avoiding Hounds, but eventually flagged Anti-melee cave, followed by getting another rFear pip in the mountains from dragons. Flagged Angband, and then in the mountains of Giant's Hall finally gained enough Essence for 63% rFire; about the level of item protection as 2 normal pips of rFire.

Angwil Black Market had a neat Demon body armour, finally elevating rNether to relevancy at 25%, and then a BM trawl of all the current towns meant there's only 1 more Imp armour til 2x sInvis.

There may not have been a poignant stopping event this time, but I recognized that I was tired enough to start making mistakes, and so ended this session.

(Also, not really a bug, yet... should the Midnight Dragon really spawn in the wilderness when it's daytime?)


Loot from the trip included a rod each of Disenchantment and Fire Ball, and I was expecting to use them to do Sting quest, but it turns out the red Ancient Dragon I brought in was mostly able to handle things itself and I just had to worry about it destroying loot. (At least for the non-'confusing summons from Queen Ant' part.)

(First potion of Self Knowledge at Telmora Black Market, first point of light radius from Cammithrim in Barrow Downs, and rChaos hit relevancy in Old Watchtower.)

Ran out of quests again, noticed I hadn't done Tidal or Orc Cave, and so did some quick trips for stat points before diving Angband until DL33, where mere Loge was almost too hard to beat.


It's beginning to seem almost as though, despite all my progress, I can't really afford to go past DL35 anywhere, because I can't deal enough damage (even though my burst and sustainable damage are ok, since that still isn't the burst sustained). The staff of Confuse Monsters is also falling off in usefulness, in that most things I'd need it for are also immune around this point.
One neat thing is being only one rElec essence short of having two pips of rBase - 2%, and another is finally having decent AC, but those are mostly just making the depths I was already spending time at less annoying, rather than affording deeper depths.

I'm going to need a lot more ragtime music if the CL30-35 difficultly hill for Rags extends as far as it looks like it will. Any suggestions?

Combined stat boosts and accumulated slaying means melee is finally decent at 171 damage a turn.)

Listening to that music repeatedly has helped me clarify in my mind what ragtime music is, so I think I'll have an easier time finding ones that count even if they aren't labeled that way. For instance; I'm fairly sure the last 3/7ths of this performance by Martin Leung of Super Mario World level themes, this performance of Super Mario 64 Main Theme (also Leung), and this one of Gunpowder Tea from Trigun (a cover, but one nearly identical to original) all fit the pattern of classic ragtime music.
Then, in terms of influence more than categorization, I'm very sure I've heard fragments of Scott Joplin's Magnetic Rag note-for-note in another piece entirely, and a piece riffing off of Maple Leaf Rag, but I can't seem to remember just which pieces those were.

Slowly crept down a little in Lonely Mountain, mostly due to HP (473) and Damage (197/round); I'd started the grinding around DL33, but ended up on DL37, nearly the DL 'rodent too' died on.

(Picked up first reflection essence [apparently 1/3, instead of something absurd], the last body armour essence of rAcid, and finally gained an aura [Cold, at '4d5+2' damage], all from the same randart.)

I reached critical levels of boredom, and so went off and did the Lesser Titan quest; it was easier than expected, mostly due to the Confusion-staff-on-first-turn-in-LOS tactic. It was also harder than expected; I reached 250 hp due to a Colossus with no other monsters nearby because I forgot how hard it could hit when you're not kiting it. Very hardest part of the quest, was, of course, loot triage. (The reward was some randart gloves of 'first slow digestion essence' except that doesn't matter since Glove is not a slot which gets that very often.)

Recalled and compared; Slay Dragon was enough for Smaug even if not the Lair, and that damage means LM is still better even if the loot was mysteriously better at the same depth in Castle (probably the armour-bias and device-bias on some of the p's talking).

(Rags, like Rings and Deathswords, do not get the Warning property from items.)

Another milestone; I've passed the point at which Regeneration matters significantly on a non-SP character, where I use Cure Wounds staves and Healing potions for all my healing regardless. This means that at the rate I gain Regeneration essences and the rate those translate into rag-pips, they are unlikely to ever be relevant again, even in the post-endgame. (Specifically, I expect around 800% Regen, which doesn't mean much in the face of 2-3 Healing staff spam and at least +20 Speed.)


Technically, I stopped listening to (ragtime) music while playing, but that's because I'd listened to my current supply enough times that it continued in my mind regardless.

@emulord: Thanks, I guess; it really was just resisting the temptation to dive though, rather than any great skill or luck.

Decided the Zul trip was worth 125k when including dragon-slaying; along the way, I flagged Graveyard and Anti-Magic Cave, and picked up first essence (out of 6) for +Life on boots. Removed the cowardice mutation, but it turns out Shuffling the stock of the Dragon Armour shop was far more significant; the occasional boots and gloves in the shop helped even out my body-armour-biased resistance-essences, upgrading most of my resistances from 'ok' to actually good, and in the case of rBlind and rPoison, very good (at 46 and 80%). Notably, rShards and rChaos reached 41%, which I think is enough to stop item destruction from Chaos?
(Shuffling + buying took all the 1.22mil I'd collected til then.)

Later, I wasted a bunch of turns trying to take down Malekith, and it turns out even hasted I simply didn't have enough Speed to take his last 1-3 stars before he inevitably teleports and heals.

At some point I killed a Cthonian quickly, so I figured it was time for Sand Pit, which went fine (providing a useless sword), and opened up Dragon Quest. The loot from that wasn't nearly the same order of magnitude as going to Zul, but it did somewhat refill cash supplies.
(MITZE tuned into the game here, and helpfully asked whether accuracy/damage bonuses on Sniper gloves get globbed into melee; they do, although of course statistically that's only +1 or +2 over the mid-late game. [Total melee is now 352 normal, 487 vs Animals/Humans, and 526 vs. Dragons.])
