Sil-Q seems to have some nice ideas, though I was slightly disappointed it didn't go further in incentivizing the player away from the standard 'Stack evasion, become unkillable' style. Perhaps that's not feasible without seriously changing the mechanics though. Either way, looking forward to seeing what becomes of it in the future.

My last game was a real eye-opener in how powerful archery is in Sil-Q (and regular Sil? I've never used it in that either, aside from a couple of points to pick off fleeing orcs), and I knew I could have done a lot better if I hadn't had problems with my arrow supply - particularly the Piercing ones, which are invaluable later on. So this time I went hard into Smithing - mainly for Piercing arrows, but also to reduce the hassle of IDing.

For the vast majority of the descent I felt like I was fighting my inventory constraints more than I was fighting the actual dungeon denizens, but carting around the +Grace/Smith stuff was worth it in the end, as I found enough forges to make a couple of half-decent artifacts.

Got a little bit worried I'd run out of arrows on the ascent, as I had to waste a whole bunch on Relentless Horrors in the throne room before Morgoth came to find me, but it worked out alright in the end.

Anyway, yeah, archery needs a nerf. Its main problem is probably the 'halve your target's evasion' thing, because Evasion really is the king stat in this game. Have you considered some sort of 'aim' mechanic? The increased accuracy of bows might be more appropriate if the player paid for that by having to spend turns aiming his weapon. Different levels of aim could produce shots with different modifications to the roll (no aiming not affecting the target's evasion, one turn reducing it by 25%, two turns bringing it up to what it's currently at i.e. reducing it by 50%).

For your last point; not much in the way of concrete ideas, I just dislike how vital (and not just viable) Evasion is lategame. An off the cuff idea would be to change Critical Resistance to Critical Immunity and harshen the requirements/add a drawback? But it's not necessarily a problem to have things as they are. It just leads to Sil games feeling a bit more similar at the end than I tend to enjoy personally.

I think the dragon horn bow may be part of the problem. Each new critical adds a lot of damage. Scatha suggested making them three dice instead; I think I may do that as that will reduce the impact of criticals. I may also reduce the dice sides on bows. I'm a little worried about making the early game harder but I can probably balance that if necessary.

Orome has had mixed feedback and is for the chop. It feels like Dedication may need to go also in favour of something that increases damage less.

Bow enchantments are quite lacklustre at present - largely because anything that increases damage has the potential to make archery even more broken, and most weapon enchantments increase damage one way or another.

With regard to Evasion, its possible to go the Protection route instead with Staying and Hardiness at present to the point I feel protection may be getting a little too good: have a look at http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=22041, the second most recent Morgoth kill, which has just 21 Evasion by game end.

Searching skeleton controls should be visible from the help screen - it's the use command, which is "," on your own square or "/" on an adjacent square. What would you expect it to be? It could be extended to the open command also (some people use it for chests) though that seems less obvious to me.

I expect you're right about the dragon horn bow exacerbating the issue with archery - though in the game I won immediately prior to this one, I was using a 2lb 2d6 longbow and that was very strong as well. Reducing their damage sides would greatly exacerbate bows' weakness with regards to armour - if you go that route, I wouldn't be surprised to see most archers doing what I did here and using multiple forges to make stacks of arrows of piercing.

Had a look at the dump you mentioned - I guess it's partly a matter of perspective, but that guy still had 14 base evasion, which is a heavy investment. I'd be interested in seeing if there were any winners with less than 8 points in evasion, for example (as I'm sure there are winners with less than 8 of every other stat).
