After losing lots of characters during stat gain (mostly ninjas and other melee classes), I've decided to go pick this babe right here.
I know, not the most original of choices, but there don't seem to be any high-mages on the FCB ladder (no winners, no losers, no nothing).
The idea is to take it VERY slowly, only play maybe 1 hour each day, without rushing.
Tips on which demigod powers to choose would be most welcome. As of now, I'm guessing Subtle Casting + One with Magic may be the best combo: Arcane Mastery wouldn't help me that much when I already have the Shrewd + Athena parentage + High-Mage crushing my failrates into oblivion; Fell Sorcery seems bad and unnecessary for a High-Mage Armageddon-ist. Maybe Weird Mind is something that I should consider?
On 23.9.2018 23:42 Sideways wrote: Not sure about One with Magic on an Armageddon high-mage. While it helps with anti-magic which is certainly nice, I think people normally worry more about dispel magic (which it also helps with); but dispelling might not be such a huge issue on an Armageddon high-mage, because they're not the biggest buff users. There aren't that many monsters who anti-magic, and it doesn't stop devices so you can teleport to safety when it happens.

I think it would be easier if you had a race with more HP, such as a half-titan or a Hades parentage demigod who chooses unyielding
Another possibility is a blood-mage, but they are like a mage, not a high mage
Have you considered Hera parentage
Charge draining is bad but I don't know how often you will be in melee range for demonic grasp to be worth it
Have you considered cult of personality and evasion
One with magic and potion chugger: handy against a few high level uniques, perhaps not needed elsewhere

In my view, with respect to taking it slowly, the important things are: not playing when you are tired and not attempting quests before you can handle them
Many of my best characters have been killed by tiredness: I remember my demon character, 1300 normal damage, 2200 lightning branded damage, it was 2 am, I was tired, I was mopping up uniques, first time I encountered the Babbage analytical engine, it breathed for awful damage, it was immobile so I used destruction to break line of sight, it summoned creatures out of my line of sight (I ignored the text message "your helm glows black"), I moved, I was tag teamed by the Babbage analytical engine and the summoned unique

On 24.9.2018 17:24 amalek wrote: Thanks for the comments guys.
Just hit CL 21 and I decided to call it a day. This is usually the point where I get cocky and start spamming Meteor on everything, usually resulting in the premature death of my High-Mages. I better take a break :)
Things of note:
* went to Morivant and did the snakes quest (for the whip, obviously)
* got ambushed on my way to Angband by a group of 30-40 cave orcs and a dozen of black orcs; luckily I had a scroll of phase door which I used to unfuck myself so that I could rain Lightning balls on their heads. A black orc actually dropped the Torc of the Hero that I'm wearing
* did a few levels of Angband
* went to Thalos and did the Magic Shrooms quest: usually, after killing the 5 mushrooms, I keep diving until the last level and then recall, so that when I'm stronger I can recall straight to the bottom; not today, as an ambush by The Borshin almost killed me
* fought in the Arena up till the Basilisk
* got some AMAZING rings from the Royal Lyceum quests in Thalos
* did the Shadow Faeries quest and got a Filthy Rag with all base Res. (!!!!!!)
I stopped here as I know myself, I would start venturing into the mountains and die from hubris.
As the CL 20 talent I chose Subtle Casting. I still don't know which the other one will be, and from what you guys wrote One with Magic isn't really worth it. And yes, Mocht, I did the same reasoning as yours: Demonic Grasp isn't needed on ranged characters, and Cult of Personality and Evasion are two strong contenders (especially Evasion, which could spare me some 1HKO from strong breaths). Astral Guide I only really found it useful on Ninjas, Duelists and especially Psions. Fell Sorcery and Arcane Mastery aren't needed.
>I vote for Subtle Casting and Fleet of Foot. (You cannot go wrong with reduced energy use on movement. It works on all builds that need to move.)
That's true OmniNegro, but in my experience an High-Mage Armaggedon-ist doesn't move a lot: as soon as you spot an enemy, you stand still and spam whatever high-damage spell you have. If an enemy is too strong or he's near you, you don't even try to move, you just teleport away, as the risk of getting one-shotted is too high. The only way I could see FoF being useful is if positioning becomes an issue in the late game (as in, you spot an enemy and you want to position yourself in best way possible to keep spamming magic), so I'll see when I reach CL 40 if I really need it.
Mocht, I went for a High-Mage + Athena + Shrewd combo because I wanted the absolute best mage in the game. Basically, I want to reach a point where I can just spam Mana Balls everywhere. I only considered Hera for her Clear Mind, but decided against it because I liked Athena more.
> Also, the path name for your character dump is visible, that happens when you do a character dump twice
Thanks, in 5 years that I'm playing Angband this is actually the first character that I'm dumping on the ladder.
> not playing when you are tired and not attempting quests before you can handle them
Definitely. In fact, I'd say that in *bands the most dangerous enemy is... yourself. All characters that I lost were always due to carelessness / overconfidence / boredom. This is why I'm taking it slow.
> Also, I think there are (in Zul?) special quests for mages
I think you're referring to the Royal Lyceum in Thalos, which always rewards you with items tailored to a mage, even if you're playing a melee class.
On 24.9.2018 19:24 Mocht wrote: "I think you're referring to the Royal Lyceum in Thalos" - No, I am referring to something else
From your comments it is clear that your knowledge exceeds that of a person who has "been fooling around with FCB for a few weeks", so I take back my comments about different birth options, I wasn't trying to be patronizing
If you are not choosing arcane mastery, then you could have chosen it together with a different personality or a different race/parentage
I'm surprised that you chose subtle casting
If you are looking to optimize then I am think that Arcane mastery and Hades/Hera is better than Subtle casting and Athena
On 24.9.2018 19:39 Mocht wrote: "I want to reach a point where I can just spam Mana Balls everywhere" - that's the biggest reason I don't play offensive spellcasters, I hate how their spells destroy loot

On 25.9.2018 09:35 amalek wrote: Well, that didn't go well. So, I died but I forgot to dump so here's what happened.
I started clearing some dungeons. Did the labyrinth, hideout, icky cave, explored some Camelot. Then I decided to fight some more battles in the Arena. Stopped at the Vampire Lord. Obviously, I got the ?Acquirement from the Ogre Shaman, and I decided to try something that I saw some players do: travel to Mt. Olympus to read the ?Acquirement there to get better items.
Oh boy...
I managed to get on the shores of Mt. Olympus just fine. I read the scroll and got... a lousy pair of Dwarven boots. +1 CON, -1 stealth, FreeAction. Certainly no better than the boots I was wearing.
On my way back, I got ambushed by that green water dragon (Fasticodeleon or something). I immediately read a ?Teleportation but... I ended up right in the middle of a pack of Hydras, with Scylla too. I got breathed into oblivion and went from full HP to -282 (even though I had 50% rPoison, so imagine what would've happened without that).
So lesson learned? I should never go to Mt. Olympus unless I'm REALLY ready.
>Sorcery, Chaos and Nature spellcasters get a special quest in Zul (and death paladins get a special quest in Telmora)
Thanks, I didn't know that. I assume you're talking about those three towers in Zul. I've only been to Zul once with my best character (a CL 39 ninja) and actually managed to do the portal quest (barely). Man, this game is hard.

As Bostock said, it is not the closeness to Olympus that killed you, it was the deep water, if you went to Ryleh(?) or Numenor you would have been in similar peril
Deep water is dangerous even to high level characters, I avoid deep water like the plague unless my character is near level 50
Mountain ambushes near Zul can also be dangerous
"I managed to get on the shores of Mt. Olympus just fine. I read the scroll and got... a lousy pair of Dwarven boots"
Did you enter Mt Olympus, Mt Olympus has a guardian (is it a sky drake?)
The first level of Mt Olympus is level 80 or so, I don't know what level the shore of My Olympus is
Even if you do read a scroll of acquirement at a deep level the result can still be disappointing
All of the deeper dungeons have guardians except Angband, if you want to get to a deep level, and don't want to defeat a guardian, then you can go straight down in Angband and choose to fail the random Angband quests
Zul is worth going to
It has a jewellery shop and a dragon armour shop, and a place to cure mutations (it used to be the only place to cure mutations but now it can also be done in Thalos or Anambar)
Also, you can go to Zul to get ambushed on purpose, and level up by killing dragons, Hugo style
When you were ambushed (and in great danger) it would have been safer to teleport away the sea dragon or read a scroll of teleport level (scrolls of teleport level work in the wilderness, scrolls of destruction do not (I think))
As you have distance attacks you could have done the tengu and death sword quest early (as long as the tengus don't teleport you into the middle of the death swords and kill you instantly)
The point of that is that you can then do the mimics quest early, and the mimics quest often has good items which can make a huge difference to a low level character
"Man, this game is hard"
If you would like to see some of the later stuff in the game then I recommend playing a steel dragon
With their huge AC and health they are simple and easy to play

Yeah, I know I did some pretty stupid thing, but the only thing in my mind at the time was "boy, I hope I get some amazing artifact".
I didn't even try to enter Mt. Olympus, I just read the scroll as soon as I reached the shore. The wilderness was LV60.

That's correct. Destruction and earthquaking don't work outdoors.

Humm, I've never noticed the one in Thalos, where is it?
The one in Anambar is so expensive that it's usually better to just go to Zul.
Zul is surprisingly safe to visit if you're slow, careful, willing to sacrifice consumables (if you don't have renewable sources of detection and teleportation), and willing to abort and head back in if there's something deadly near town.
> I ended up right in the middle of a pack of Hydras, with Scylla too. I got breathed into oblivion and went from full HP to -282 (even though I had 50% rPoison, so imagine what would've happened without that).
Poison is delayed damage, so it wasn't the poison if you died on the first turn. But Scylla breathes fire, and so do the higher hydras, 9 heads and up I think. But I'm not sure there are any of those in her escort.
I bet you got poisonlocked alongside the Scylla breath.
Note that Mushrooms of Cure Poison cure *ALL* poisoning, even thousands of points worth. Still, Mocht's ?TeleportLevel suggestion is the best.

I meant the Anambar one, I forgot which town it was in
"Poison is delayed damage, so it wasn't the poison if you died on the first turn"
I think I have been hit with huge and immediate poison damage

It was a level 50 mauler, he was looking good and had just opened up Mine
I didn't realize he was overburdened, going over deep water he began to drown and was taken down to the local map
I dropped loot, and was one-shot
He had a good amount of health, but drowning took off a fair amount, and it was goodnight
I don't think I've ever posted a death dump because I find them too traumatic

Toxic Waste might include both poison and direct damage.
Otherwise, I would be very surprised to see poison damage that procs before the player gets an action.
