Basically the criteria for the shield to fail you are that you're in a position where your health is okay but you've taken a hit and max damage against your armour roll could leave you dead or close to dead, and you've failed a random roll; then it will choose a roll that leaves you barely alive. Anything that could roll for high damage has the potential to ruin your character's day and yes, there are lots of those in the throne room. On the other hand it helps you mete out some savage beatings.

This may still need some tweaking - would be glad of your thoughts at the end of the run.

the shield might not be as good as i thought it was because it really lends itself towards heavy hand-an-a-half weapons, which are fairly uncommon.
