Shadow dragons in the beginning are a pain, having the weakest attacks and life rating of all the dragon types and a breath weapon that is easily resisted by many things. While trying to fight Loge, I got hit with nexus and ended up at Depth 42 in a random dungeon I couldn't recall out of. Judge Fire, Ancient dragons, and an Iron lich dogged my steps - and it was a very harrowing escape. Fortunately, it was only a couple levels deep. I did manage to get that awesome defender ring with dark resist in my residence out of it.

If you want to get decent XP from summons even after the penalties for not being a Quylthulg, you want to get a huge summon fight started somewhere in your detection range but on the other side of a perma-wall or similar; have summons that summon fighting enemies that summon wherever they will not bother you. Use staves of Summon Monsters if your dragon summoning doesn't give you summoners (ideally getting durable uniques for the job).
Also will probably need multiple Clarity rods or similar source of SP; I think the cap on Pet upkeep was raised or removed completely?

My favored method for this is using detection and teleport to quickly find a huge vault, then start the summon fight outside the vault so it's running while you clear the inside of the vault.

There will probably be intermittent spillover from the fight, but the retinue you keep with you and the fact vaults can't be teleported into will mitigate it.

(Finally, if you get really desperate instead of just slow going, you can order your pets to attack each other, and you'll still get XP for the attacks they make. Doesn't get you loot and way too boring for a game, but it could get you past a CL that would be boring regardless.)
