Anyway, partway through the game I noticed something of an oversight with new Channeling; to implement it, all staves technically had twice as many charges as shown, and simply used two charges each time unless you had Channeling. This also means that for _Recharging to work, it used two charges and gave two charges, except of course when one had channeling, where it used a single charge and gave... two charges. This meant you could use the staff on itself to get as many charges as you wanted to spend turns on, and transfer them to other staves.

So this was a game where I played around with various staves, and discovered that many of them do not benefit much from extra charges, because the cases one would use them are already uncommon— the exceptions of course, being Treasures, Foes, Revelations, and Understand; all the information staves. This also taught me how to be a bit more focused with my 950ft scumming; going for things I could stand missing rather than going to whatever I was curious about.

This is also the game I noticed that artifacts can generate again; the staff of the Helcaraxe is one I found at 950ft, but I spotted it again in the throneroom.


For the Throneroom itself, I carried the Bat-fell and bought Silence so I could sneak around some; the goal being to kill things off and clear them out without waking up Morgoth, so I could fight him alone. This got farther than most of my attempts, but then I opened a door and met Ungoliant, at which point I had to switch to Aggravating gear to having enough light, and that was enough to attract Morgoth.

The fight was drawn out, experimental, and awkward: it started with a couple Unrelenting Horrors nearby, as well as Ancient Adamant Serpents and plenty of annoying chaff; and I was attempting to figure out if any of the abilities I had could help cheat at Morgoth somehow, such as with Fast + Controlled Retreat + Polearm Mastery being able to hit him enough without being hit back at all. I found that I couldn't make progress against him unless I switched out my rPois and switch in the Poison vulnerable greatspear of Melkor, and that wasn't practical with all the strong poisoners nearby.

So I started kiting him to heal up and kill things with Flanking along the way, and nearly died to Glaurung spotting me from 7+ spaces away and confusing me; so after that I had to Sing Staying whenever I went past him, since I couldn't avoid doing so and keep moving away from Morgoth at the same time.

I got cornered a couple times, bought Exchange Places, used some Rage, and knocked Morgoth's crown off properly... so I could kite him some more and going around to grab a Sil.

Then around and around we went, set to Benny Hill chase music if you like, where I kept testing him in combat and killing this along the way... while occasionally taking another shot at Crown.

I had just gotten 2 Sils when I thought I'd cleared enough creatures that I could fight Morgoth almost entirely alone, maybe taking him down before the 3rd Sil.

I had forgotten he gets stronger from any source of anger in Silq; he had gone to +32 attack with my probing and taking Sils, and was bound to go higher as he went lower in HP. So I had to say goodbye to Morgoth slaying.

(I might have been able to do so anyway with more scumming, but I had lost my staff of Treasures at the time, and I really didn't want to spend the time or attention.)


There was a little getting distracted on the way up, like killing Lungy by buying Song of Thresholds and clearing the Surface of almost everything, but nothing terribly eventful.
