I have just finished Camelot. Spent some time in Camelot after killing Arthur Pendragon as Jurt polymorphed my pet mature gold dragon into a logrus master. I took the pet and his pets (Leng spiders) back to DL34 to find something to fight. Happened to be Botei-Building and a bunch of dark elven warlocks.
Early in the game I managed to buy !Self Knowledge. The stats don't look great apart from the life rating.
Does it make sense to quaff !New Life or should I stick with the current max stats?
Also, should I just quaff !New Life or wait till I have more than one potion?
So far, I have only encountered one !Self Knowledge (bought) and one !New Life (not enough gold to buy it).
Your current Life Rating is 115/100.

Cleared Stronghold, explored Icky cave until DL30, then went to Giant's Hall until DL35. After this I went to Camelot and made a couple of short detours to various quests, the Labyrinth and Lonely Mountain.
The most fun fights so far has been with Grendel, Sir Gawain and Sir Lancelot.
Grendel was in Giant's Hall in an unusual layout. Looked as if the level was inside out (small islands of wall and large areas of ground), so there was a lot of space to fight with missiles. Since Grendel only brought one ogre mage (orange O) I just stayed out of melee and used my xbow. Didn't bother killing the other ogres until Grendel was down.
After Grendel I got _Summon Hydras and spammed my own summons to match those of various uniques (Icky Queen, Multi-hued Centipede, Red Helm). Having hydras handle Red Helms disenchanters and rust monsters was so nice.
Sir Gawain and Sir Lancelot drained all my base consumables (!Speed, !Heroism and !CCW) without going down. I tried to lure them into an ASC, but the AI is smart enough to recognize the setup. I recalled, went to Lonely Mountain to get enough ?Magic Mapping for the Labyrinth as I had lost _Enlightenment in Camelot. With ?Magic Mapping I went to the Labyrinth and just headed for the nearest stairs until I reached the bottom. These detours were mostly to get new items in the shops. Getting enough consumables, I returned to Camelot and created a slightly different ASC (three tiles connected before breaking LOS with one tile, then three tiles more) and managed to lure Sir Gawain inside. Without his usual summons he was easy to kill. For Lancelot I just quaffed !CCW whenever I was cut.

I'll save !New Life until I know what my equipment is capable of. I have just had a major reshuffle to get reflection and hold life. Even then I have +2 STR from equipment.
I've managed to get two !New Life and one !Self Knowledge, without paying. Two potions from Telmora arena and one from Mountain where I'm currently exploring.
I also got ?Acquirement from Telmora arena. I don't know if the effect scales with dungeon/danger level. Should I read the scroll in a dungeon or just read it in town?
On 1.6.2017 17:06 Ironshod Al wrote: The game is a bit slow at this point. I cleared a couple of early dungeons to get enough levels to enter Mountain and Anti-melee cave. My character feels too weak for Utgard-Loke and Mountain DL45+. I paid a couple of visits to Anti-melee cave to gain another level. That dungeon is a bit more managable than Mountain, although I'm relying mostly on damage from the crossbow which isn't very powerful.
Nearly died (down to 62 HP) to a mini vault containing Scylla (not a problem) and a elder fire giant (a real problem) that I couldn't see. I failed to notice the huge amount of damage I recieved from thrown boulders, while fighting Scylla and related hydras.
I have also played around with various staves of summoning and managed to summon Kavlax (unfriendly), so I had to kill it. A group of dreads kept Charon too busy to fight me while I killed him.

That means you get to damage yourself (and, excitingly, therefore sometimes also take on fear status) to get a failchance at an effect that itself is also unrelaible and even when works is still almost always worse than spending the turn attacking. How exciting!
Fortunately you've made the correct choice of never using it.

Your comment is hilarious. I bet Douglas Adams used to call you late at night when he ran out of funny ideas for The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The style is very similar.
My hopes are that I can upgrade Sword Dancing to Lochaber Dancing at CL40 and maybe even River Dancing at CL45. Dancing around two crossed lochaber axes or two crossing rivers is way cooler than dancing around a couple of crossed swords.
And yes, I haven't used Sword Dancing in this game. Al 8 used it a couple of times, but it felt like a very elaborate way of attacking something on an adjacent tile.
On 3.6.2017 11:17 Ironshod Al wrote: My character is still doing pretty well. I think I'm ready to go deeper than DL46. Just stayed to test the latest equipment changes.
I left Anti-melee cave and decided to go back to Mountain. Crossbow of velocity is too weak to deal with summoners without melee as backup. I run out of ammo too often, while melee weapons don't run out of hits. Thus, mountain DL45 was a walk in the park (among towering, petrified hedges) in comparison to Anti-melee cave DL42.
The crossbow is junk anyway as I found a Sling of Buckland. +3 Speed is better than extra damage, and resistance to light, confusion and blindness makes the sling hard to beat. Iron shots survive almost as long as bolts.
The most recent problems have been lack of nether resistance and forgetting to swap ~Tele for RfHl.
With +3 Speed from the sling I swapped Spear of Hagen with Warrior's Honor to fix the lack of nether resistance. This is a bit funny as virtues claim 'You are an enemy of Honour.'
Without the spear my only source of sInv is the boots. This seems a bit odd as well. I imagine my character stumbling over invisible creatures in order to 'detect' them. ;)
Memorable Moments:
Had a couple of interesting fights on DL42 of Anti-melee cave.
One was a pit of ogre mages surrounded by halfling slingers and gravity hounds. With enough HP and some walls to break LOS, gravity hounds turns into free Phase Door. Pure fun! The ogres spammed summoning and produced enough enemies that I could reach CL36. Used ?Phase Door/Gravity Hound between the pit and the surrounding moat. I had to get creative a couple of times as 190 bolts wasn't enough to kill everything. I managed to empty the quiver and had to jump over enemies to collect ammo.
The other fight was with a small group of summon happy byakhees. I had to dig a couple of ASCs and kill them a few at a time. Then they summoned shadow demons, forcing me to recall. Wall-walking summoners, when you can't melee and are low on ammo is as bad as it sounds.
The byakhee fight got me my first real telepathy item. Sadly, it was an amulet with nothing else, so I swap between telepathy and reflection+hold life.
On the other hand, I know I can now tank lesser titan boulders and kill a lesser titan using nothing but bolts. Again I had to jump around to collect ammo from ground.
At some point, I brought ?Acquirement along to a dungeon, forgot to read it and it got destroyed. Yippee!
On 3.6.2017 20:10 Ironshod Al wrote: Hm! I got some monsters mixed up in the previous comment. Shadow demons don't summon, but they fire nether bolts which is just as bad. Still a good reason to recall as I didn't have resistance to nether.
Reaching CL39 I decided to kill Utgard-Loke. I picked up Sting when I felt confident about the quest, and since I didn't need resistance to nether and dark I decided to bring the sword along. Sting does more damage than Warrior's Honor and fighting Utgard-Loke is mostly about killing him fast. The fight wasn't too bad. I had to ?Phase Door once to heal up, but between _Holiness and _Cure Wounds I managed to stay alive. Picking a corridor for the fight instead of a room ensured that the summons were managable. I had to -TO a greater titan, a marid and a stone giant. If the fight had been harder, I might have recalled to pick up my other ring of speed +5. That would give me +20 Speed when hasted.
Back to Mountain, I fought The Stormbringer. I'm not sure how this weapon works. The description says it drains XP, but has hold life. Does hold life negate the drain or is there still a chance of getting drained?
I finally managed to get to CL40. I decided to visit Mountain DL50 a couple of times. The first time there was a vault on the level, but the level was infested with spawn of Ubbo-Sathla, so I had to recall. Second time I couldn't find Thorondor, but part of the dungeon was unavailable because a master lich had summoned an awful lot of other monsters. The third time I was uncertain if I could actually kill Thorondor, but stayed in order to get the 50k XP remaining before CL40. In the meantime I managed to get the guardian down below 50% health and decided to finish the dungeon. With level up and a dead guardian I maxed STR and CON. 20 points short of 18/*** for STR. I have 4 !New Life and 6 !Self Knowledge, if I decide to get a better max for STR.
With the current achievement I'm going to take a pause from the game. When I return, I'll most likely head for the Arena. I hope to get a weapon with better damage at some point and Arena is probably a good place to look.
On 6.6.2017 16:04 Ironshod Al wrote: Wow, the Arena has been tough.
Swapped Stone of Lore for 'Eye of Argon' (Galadriel randart). This maxed STR but eats an inventory slot for _Identify. I carry Stormbringer as a swap, so I have lost 3 inventory slots in total: amulet and weapon swaps + _Identify. Sadly, even with 18/*** I can't carry all my stuff without losing speed. I have also changed !CCW to !Healing. I still try to stick with _Cure Wounds and _Holiness, but the enemies in Arena hit hard.
I bought a poison needle with the intention of killing Yibb-Tstll the Patient One. Despite hitting it a lot, I didn't manage to kill it, so I had to switch back to a real weapon and live with the damage and stat drains. That fight cost me 3 !Healing.
After 4-5 attempts at DL50 I managed to clean the level and feel confident enough to take the down stairs. On DL51 I have only encountered uniques and summons so far: Garm, Baphomet and the Lernean Hydra. I managed to kill Garm the second time. Had to flee reading ?Teleport Level the first time. Likewise, I had to flee from Baphomet, but killing the minotaur is not easy. I was close the first time, but second time I had to flee and return to town. In the meantime I had lost all ?Recall, so I had to walk from Arena entrance to Angwil. I tried killing the Lernean Hydra once. That didn't work out, so I decided to leave it for later.
There was also a couple of near death incidents in Arena. One time I landed in a room with monsters after ?Teleport, but managed to read ?Destruction and survive. Another time a dark elven shade had blinded me and was doing a lot of damage. I managed to swap to my telepathy amulet and use -TO. Had to use it twice because first attempt failed. The two encounters left me at 48 and 62 HP. Ouch!
In Telmore I managed to defeat the greater titan in the arena by wielding Stormbirnger. Even with vampirism, it was a very even fight.
At this point I have a couple of nifty weapons at home, but need a different source of nether resistance before I can switch away from the current weapons.
On 7.6.2017 09:23 Ironshod Al wrote: Doing much better in Arena at the moment. Baphomet is down, but I leave Bran and Santa Claus alone for a while.
Plenty of great loot. I'll probably soon be able to move nether resistance away from my weapons. Also noted that I lack resistance to disenchantment. Shudde M'ell popped up constantly, so I decided to bring disenchantment resistance as a temporary swap just to kill it.
On 7.6.2017 15:45 Ironshod Al wrote: Dworkin Barimen managed to give me my first blood curse. What a nasty parting gift.
Arena DL56+ was a bit hard. The monsters are relatively easy to deal with, but the uniques are difficult to fight. So I decided to take a closer look at Volcano to see what it was all about. I managed to get close to the entrance via ?Teleport (actually running away from an elder fire giant), but didn't get close enough to enter the dungeon. Instead I peeked into Dragon's Lair to see if it was better or worse than my current experience with Arena.
The inital forays into Dragon's Lair have been fun. I can wield Stormbringer most of the time. A lot of the monsters are stupid, so ASC helps a lot. And I finally got revenge over Judge Death.
I also found this shiny piece of armor:
Filthy Rag of Celestial Protection [1,+15] {PoLiSh;Fa}. I really like the PoLiSh part. Reminds me of Rincewind writing Wizzard on his hat.
On 8.6.2017 07:14 Ironshod Al wrote: Shuffled equipment, but haven't tested it yet. Soulcrusher gives me resistance to disenchantment and is my go-to weapon just like Stormbringer before. The rapier gives me +22 speed when hasted and unencumbered and doesn't aggravate, so I wield when entering new levels. The extra amulet is mostly a swap for reflection. I don't know how useful that is anymore. Most ranged attacks looks like balls or breaths.
Found my second ?Acquirement. It burned up before I could read it. Found a third one and managed to read it on DL62. It gave me Nimthanc. Yay! I'm not getting lucky with these scrolls.
Cleared out my first real vault on DL62. Bramd the Ice Dragon didn't move at all (artifact on floor, perhaps?), so I had plenty of time to prepare for the fight.
Fiona managed to put a heavy curse on Stormbringer, but something had recently dropped ?*Remove Curse* nearby, so it wasn't a problem at all.
My character has now reached 1st place on the games internal highscore list, a wee bit better than al 8, with a score of 7085240 vs 6470288.
Anyway. It's time for another break from the game.
On 8.6.2017 16:00 MITZE wrote: >Swapped Stone of Lore for 'Eye of Argon' (Galadriel randart). This maxed STR but eats an inventory slot for _Identify.
You realize that you can just carry Lore as a swap for identification purposes, right?
>I bought a poison needle with the intention of killing Yibb-Tstll the Patient One.
I'm pretty sure that poison needles' instakill proc doesn't actually work on uniques.
On 8.6.2017 19:47 Ironshod Al wrote: @MITZE
You know, I haven't even had the thought of carrying the stone of lore as a swap. Don't know why I never thought of that. Saves a bit of weight and eats the same slot that I would otherwise use for _Identify. Thanks!
About poison needles:
Yeah, it makes sense that it doesn't work on uniques. It would be too easy to kill the tougher ones that way.
Maybe I should bring one and test it on a wyrm. If it can insta-kill a great wyrm of many colours I would be pleased.
On 9.6.2017 01:38 krazyhades wrote: Perhaps because swapping every time an item drops is awful, horrible design and shouldn't be necessary or encouraged. I recommend the forks elliposchengband as well as pseudoelliposchengband and poschengband-R which all remove this mechanic (at level...20? you gain lore intrinsically).
On 9.6.2017 03:24 Djabanete wrote: Hi Al, congratulations on the good character, and I hope you win.
Not sure if you're still wondering about XP drain versus hold life. Unless things have changed since I played (which is very possible), XP drain gradually lowers your maximum HP, while hold life helps your XP not get reduced by monster attacks. That is, it doesn't counteract XP drain from equipment at all. The good news is that XP drain from equipment is so slow as to be truly negligible compared to the amount of XP you gain in the regular course of killing things.
On 9.6.2017 05:19 Ironshod Al wrote: @krazyhades:
Not having to swap the stone of lore but simply have it work if carried would be a nice touch. And intrinsic lore sounds even better. I turned on 'easy identify' for similar reasons. Identifying items twice (pseudo to decide if item should be brought home and then *identify* in town building if relevant) gets old fast. I can't even imagine how annoying the full identify mechanic would be with the amount of item drops in dungeons like Dragon's Lair. I would probably have to bring ?*Identify* or _*Identify* to figure out what items to keep. Easy identify does just that, by upgrading ?/_Identify to ?/_*Identify*.
I have tested the stone of lore swap a bit. It's tedious, but not too bad. Items rarely drops one at a time and it is far between single items just lying on the floor. The most annoying part is that my inventory fills up quickly as most wands, staves and rods are picked up and immediately squelched when identified. Now I have to swap, drop the unknown items and step on top of them. There's a similar problem with rings and amulets, but I am slightly more likely to keep them than any random wand, staff or rod.
Also, thanks for the suggested forks. Whenever this game is over, I'll take a look at them.
@Djabanete:
Thank you for the explanation of item XP drain. I expected it to be something comparable to the 'drains experience' curse which drains XP fast (1 point per turn). So far I haven't noticed any effect at all.
A win would be nice, but I fear it is still a long way off. At least until I get more speed and possibly a better main weapon.
Also, I'm playing blind. I have very little knowledge of many of the monsters I encounter at this point (apart from the dragons and wyrms). I use the half-titan probe power to get an idea about new monsters. It's a bit dangerous. The HP loss is not a big factor, but monsters get a free round to fire any kind of ranged attack they may have available.
On 9.6.2017 12:17 Ironshod Al wrote: So much for taking a break. Got carried away when I did a quick test of the stone of lore swap setup. Most of a gaming session was spent on Dragon's Lair DL64 without recalling. When I entered DL64 I had just reached CL47. I got to CL48 just before leaving. The final fight, against the Wizard of Yendor, gave me the last bit of XP needed.
Uniques kept popping up and artifacts dropped everywhere. I had to leave a lot of items behind even after dropping most basic consumables to make extra room in my inventory. The major grabs were Werewindle, Cap of Thranduil and possibly Cloak of Jack of Shadows. Thranduil allows me to drop the amulet swap although I lose ~Nolv.
Fundin Bluecloak was caught in a bad spot. He got summoned to the deep end of an ASC with only two floor tiles before a pit (#) that he couldn't pass. As he was friendly (but wanted) I could push him to the bottom of the corridor and due to the pit tile he was unable to summon anything. Because he was friendly I had plenty of time to prepare for the fight.
In Telmora arena I killed the greater balrog, the nightwalker and got the shambler down to its last star, but realized too late that Werewindle wasn't doing enough damage. If I had used Soulcrusher all the way I might have been able to win that fight.
I've tested the poison needle on a couple of ordinary monsters (AMHD, steel dragon, maulotaur). It works as expected, but I don't think it is worth using for a warrior.
First visit to DL65 didn't go very well. I spent most time running away from Locke, the Superman until I was out of charges and had to recall. There was a vault on the level, but I never got close enough to see what was going on.
Vlad Dracula was an unexpected pushover. No flying and no wall-walking? Or maybe my character is just stronger than I realize. After all I managed to kill Mycen. Finally avenged al 8!
There's at least one unique I can't easily handle yet. The Invisible Pink Unicorn hurts too much and heals too fast. I could probably kill it by quaffing enough !Healing, but I try to only use staves and save the potions for emergencies.
And now for the actual break. Real life requires my attention.
On 9.6.2017 16:07 MITZE wrote: Re: Poison Needles
Poison Needles, in my experience, are generally more worth it versus things that resist whatever type of damage you're putting out, or things that you can't melee for too long. For example, I had a psion that switched to a poison needle when he wanted to take care of some non-unique endgame monsters that resisted most everything and had gobs and gobs of HP.
On 9.6.2017 17:42 Ironshod Al wrote: @MITZE
I decided to keep the poison needle at home, just in case it becomes useful. It sounds like that was a good decision.
Trying it against a great wyrm of many colours would have been nice, but they are rare at the moment. I have encountered two this far. Killed the first one and decided to ignore the second. It took a lot of _Cure Wound charges and some teleporting to kill the first one. Probably due to lack of speed and/or lack of a weapon with dedicated slaying.
On 14.6.2017 05:58 Ironshod Al wrote: Reached CL50. I had hoped to do so by killing Tiamat, but going several rounds with the dragon I had to give up. I tried to shuffle more speed into the equipment mix before fighting. Brought boots with +5 speed as swap and found an extra ring with +4 speed. I didn't lose resistances relevant against Tiamat. Still too much damage even with +25 speed. Managed to chop off 2 stars, but it cost a bunch of healing and ?Phase Door. So now I'm back in Arena looking for a way to get better at killing stuff fast.
Killed Gandalf the Grey. He was wanted, probably for vandalizing a bridge or killing a balrog.
This game will go back on hiatus for a couple of weeks. I would like to participate in comp 206 and what little time I have for gaming at the moment will be put into that.

The best upgrade is the helmet Hammerhand, but I lose ~Tele if I wear it. I have considered wielding Soulcrusher with no swap, so I could get ~Tele that way.
~Tele is also available on the cloak Jack of Shadows, but then I lose my only source of poison resistance.
So right now I don't see a great way to increase DEX. I could try !New Life. There are 8 potions in my home, but I have no idea how likely it is to get better max for the important stats.

With a bit of shuffling I can wear both Shield of Water and Shiva's Avatar. Shiva's Avatar gives 580 vs evil / 609 damage using Werewindle / Soulcrusher.
I lose reflection, levitation and anti-magic, but can swap an amulet for reflection or anti-magic.
Wearing an amulet with DEX+2 and ~Tele with Hammerhand helmet I can boost damage to 612 vs evil / 676 by losing resistance to sound.
As part of all the swapping I can remove my ring of protection. That brings _Healing down to 85%-88%. I can get to 74% by wearing an amulet. Wearing Thranduil gets me to 71%.

Thank you for your helpful comments. I'll probably return to this game next week.
On 26.6.2017 20:41 Ironshod Al wrote: I started diving in Angband as suggested by Mocht. I played a bit slow to get back into the game. The dive itself (DL1 > DL60) has been quite boring. Not many challenges on early levels.
Malekith, my arch nemesis from Comp 206 died without any real fight. The only unique to reach top 20 was The Yamata-no-Orochi. It was a bit of a pushover. I only had to hide once to restore health. Haven't used a single !Healing during the dive.
Cleaned out a ghost pit, killing shadow lords, dread lords and dreads. Lost some XP, but it was restored twice during the fight.
DL59 had plenty of loot, but not much that is immediately useful. Biggest =Speed was +4. Only other speed item was the bow of Heracles. +2 speed is not as good as my sling of Buckland.
DL60 is guarded by Hypnos. I haven't encountered him before, so I recalled and quit for today.
On 27.6.2017 14:13 Ironshod Al wrote: Reached DL72 and still feel reasonably confident. There are notable uniques that I can't handle easily: Izanami and Hela in particular although Hela.
Engaged Hypnos on DL60. After probing I was a bit uncertain about his danger level. However, he went down without doing anything noticable. No stat drains, no stuns, no speed reduction. Mostly thanks to _Holiness and protection from evil.
On DL67 I finally managed to behead Habu the Champion of Chaos. It cost two !Healing, but was absolutely worth it.
I decided to dump my [M swap amulet at home. I haven't used it since I returned to the game, so it is clearly not worth carrying around. Clearing out _Destruction as well. Too high risk of failing and only useful to escape difficult monsters which is a bad combination. I found BoS+4. They are used as swap when enemies don't require resistance to nexus. On DL69 a GWoMC dropped _Healing of simplicity. Only 13% risk of failure as opposed to 83% for the staff at home. If the staff survives, I should be able to finish Tiamat (and Hela and probably Izanami).
That's a project for tomorrow. I need to sort through weapons to see if I have anything that slays dragons better than Soulcrusher.

I may have forgotten the point of my amulets when the game was put on hold. Based on Mocht's suggestions I was swapping a lot of items to get better DEX and access to _Healing. I now notice one of my [M amulets give +1 to DEX as well. Today I left the amulet of devotion at home and instead brought [M with Md as swap. with Md I get _Healing down to 2% chance of failure.
For some reason I didn't reach DL72 yesterday, only DL71. Maybe ?Recall kicked in just as I reached the stairs or maybe I only travelled a staircase instead of a shaft. Nevermind!
To test my new amulets I went back to Anband DL71 and fought a bunch of uniques. Got heavily cursed by Caine, the Conspirator, but didn't suffer too much as the curse just tried to lower all stats, but failed because they are sustained. Took the stairs to DL72 and recalled. I still intend to return to Mountain and try to kill Tiamat later today.
On 28.6.2017 11:59 Ironshod Al wrote: Tiamat is down. This was my hardest fight since I returned to the game.
Encountered my first steam-powered dragon as well as my first great wyrm of space-time. Alone, they're probably ok to fight, but in a group of other dragons they become a huge problem. I wasted 2x !Healing to kill the steam engine. The wyrm was less difficult. Only breathed time once and only drained XP.
I engaged Tiamat with Speed+20 and 716 damage vs dragons by wielding Taratol. It took an awful lot of attempts to figure out how to handle the damage recieved. Eventually I used !Resistance and wore "Md to spam _Healing. Had I paid attention I would have noticed that another dragon had dropped Colluin, so I could have had free resistance that way, although I was using Jack of Shadows for extra speed.
Got a nice bundle of artifacts to bring home. Hard Leather Armour of Rituals has 7 resistances and +4 speed. I think it is worthwhile to make that armor part of my equipment. More equipment shuffling soon, but I think I'm done for today.
On 28.6.2017 19:47 Ironshod Al wrote: I got time to play a little further. I didn't find a way to wear the rituals armor. I lost too much damage that way, so I'm still on the same equipment setup. Finished DL75 and took the stairs left when Benedict died.
Takemikazuchi, the Thunder was quite a pain to fight. Spent all my _Healing, _Curing and _Holiness charges. For some weird reason I got the option of following his teleport. I was <50% HP, so I didn't do it, but I haven't seen this effect before.
Compared to Takemikazuchi, Benedict was a pushover. Three _Healing charges even when I was slower than him. Corwin was also a pushover, but he was very annoying to fight because he tried to stay out of melee range. I had a short brush with Eric, but couldn't manage to get back to him and finish him off. With everything spamming summons the level was slightly overpopulated. On the other hand, I managed to destroy Izanami when she isolated herself from all the amberites.
Returning to Outpost with Corwins corpse I noticed that Caine was wanted. That's one corpes I wont get a reward for unless it magically respawns somewhere.
At this point I wish I could find more / better speed options. I still haven't found anything better than +5 and lose too many resistances when I try to wear boots of speed. Most enemies are at Speed+20, while I'm at +17 hasted when wielding Soulcrusher.

One or the other is managable, but both requires an empty level to begin the fight. Got him below 50% health before I had to leave the level. With a bit of RNG luck I'll be able to kill him. Otherwise, I need more speed.
Returning to DL76 I found my second real vault (permanent walls). It contained a bunch of unknown uniques. Sadly, the vault was off limits as Beelzebub was too damaging. Killed Susanoo, one of the other uniques from the vault on DL77 where he was all alone. Still cost most of my _Healing charges. Also killed Ungoliant as she was much slower than Beelzebub and darkness storm then was much more managable.
Ungoliant was wanted and got me my first !Augmentation. At this point I was already at max in all stats, so it went into my home in case I want to use !New Life.

Managed to kill the invisible pink unicorn. Far better balance between damage and speed this time. Still had to kill it in melee as it healed too fast to die from sling shots.
On the fun side, a horned reaper brought me to 666 HP. Very fitting for a demon. The horned reaper was summoned by Y'golonac. Fighting Y'golonac was the first time I had HP enough to consider it safe to follow a teleport. It was down to the last star and most of the nearby dungeon had been cleaned out already.
On DL79 I finally found =Speed higher than +5. The annoying part was that it was cursed with -6 STR which is enough to get me below 18/*** STR. I upgraded my "Md to +3. This brings the _Healing at home down to 43% failure.
Kronos was the guardian on DL82. Initially I was scared of fighting him, but him having only +15 speed made the battle winnable. Took nearly all the resources and charges I brought, including 4x !Speed I found on the level. Had to resort to ?Teleport as I was out of ?Phase Door, but fortunately Kronos didn't heal very fast. With recharged staves I explored the rest of DL82. Fought Ammit, using -TO as I still didn't have ?Phase Door.
I would have liked to probe Yig. It was on the level when I started, but I couldn't find it afterwards. I finally killed my first fenghuang, one of the monsters that Hugo warned me against when I played Al 8.
Taking the stairs to DL83 I detected my first metal babble. +80 Speed and invisible to ~Tele. WTF??? Took the stairs back to DL82 and recalled. I'm not ready for somehting like that.
On 30.6.2017 19:29 krazyhades wrote: Hahahah oh metal babble. ?Forest Creation is probably the best way for your character to kill those if you ever want to. There's not much reason to, unless you specifically want to kill the Arena dungeon boss one.
On 30.6.2017 20:44 Ironshod Al wrote: @krazyhades
I don't particularly want to kill metal babbles, but until DL83 my character have had plenty of trouble evading enemies with +20 speed or more, so +80 speed was the main cause for my double-take.
However, things are finally looking up. I got above +20 speed hasted, even when wielding Soulcrusher. +14 base speed with Werewindle.
I recalled to DL83, and met no metal babbles this time. Managed to probe Loki the Trickster. Not a unique I want to fight just yet. Also encountered a qirin. Equally nasty monnster to fight.
On the other hand the level gave me =Speed+9. Finally an item with more than +5 speed. Lost A:Speed, but I can live with that.
And I've begun carrying ?Destruction. Way too often do HP go below 50% and I want a reasonably chance of saving myself. Since -TO is nerfed (compared to Angband) it has to be destruction instead.
While I played Angband 4.0.5 I rarely carried ?Teleport Level since -TO was so powerful. And I don't think I ever read one exept as read-ID. During the current poschengband game I have read ?Teleport Level quite often just to get away from tough uniques with teleport immunity/resistance.
On 2.7.2017 12:35 Ironshod Al wrote: Just reached DL90.
?Acquirement doesn't work very well for me. Read one on DL84 and got a shovel with vampirism. Read one on DL88 and got a weapon with just At+1. I believe I get better stuff from ancient dragons at this point.
Lost another corpse. Izanagi's corpse was destroyed by a lourph while I was kiting uniques away from the area. @ kept picking all sorts of stuff up from the ground and inventory overflowed whenever the corpse was picked up.
Since last time, I have been killing uniques left and right including some that were difficult earlier. There are still some uniques that are impossible to deal with. I need a bit more speed to outpace them. Fortunately, I find a bunch of gear now with small plusses to speed.
Highlights: Some silly oversight brought my character to 169 HP at one point. Fortunately, I could use !Healing and then -TO on the enemy, but still really stupid play by me.
On 2.7.2017 17:37 Ironshod Al wrote: Got hit by a stroke of really bad luck. I decided to complete the Cloning Pits as I realized that I could get great boots that way. After completion I went back to the inn and got my reward. Unfortunately my inventory was full, so the boots of Shiva's Avatar dropped on the ground. I didn't think much about it and went back to the inn to get a new quest. Since this updates the town map, items on the ground are removed. And since the boots were already identified I'm not going to find them again in this game. Bummer! To add further bad luck, I lost _Healing during the quest. The unfortunate part was that it was 'of simplicity'. My character has about 35%-45% chance of using the other staffs at home, and only while wearing "Md.
To find a new _Healing (hoping it would be 'of simplicity') I decided to complete Anti-melee cave. I also hoped to find a bigger plus to Md. This didn't work, so I had to go back to Angband.
On DL91 Gerard dropped "[MSm. It is a lot better than "Md and I even allow myself to walk around without sound resistance just to keep the summons at a minimum. I also found a new _Healing which is only 43% fail rate, but drops to 3% when wearing "Md. The only drawback is that it only has 4 charges.
On 3.7.2017 06:36 Ironshod Al wrote: Wee! I finally managed to get me some speed. +30/+40 hasted is fun.
Damage is about the same as with Werewindle and Shiva's Avatar armor, but still far from Soulcrusher damage. On the other hand I think I can stick with this setup and avoid all the swap items and aggravation. Only need to swap between [MSm and Md.
Next on the wishlist is a bit more resistance vs dark. Darkness storm hurts a lot right now.
While testing my new equipment I lost a couple of staves to unmakers including _Healing. Those monsters are really annoying.

Main damage on @ is from his auras and the obvious nasty spells.
On 3.7.2017 20:57 Ironshod Al wrote: Returning to DL99 I had to perform the historical ritual of killing Sauron, the Sorcerer. At least he decided to greet me when I had destructed a part of the dungeon to get rid of Draugluin and his band of dogs. Sauron immediately decided to return Draugluin to the dungeon and I destroyed the werewolf again along with Cyaegha. Sauron dropped _Rockets. 99% failure, unfortunately.
I made several attempts at killing Oberon. Fourth or fifth time was a success. I eventually decided to bring !CCW to avoid relying on staves and !Healing. Also brought ?Protection from Evil to keep as many charges of _Holiness available as possible for damage.
Oberon summoned a total of 3 cyberdemons. I was hit by a rocket twice (once after Oberon was dead) and don't really want to experience something like that again.
Kiting the cyberdemons and an elder vampire away from Oberon's drops, I sifted through his belongings and had to drop a couple of _Cure Wounds and !CCW to make room for all the nice artifacts. When the cyberdemons and vampire returned, I took the stairs to DL100 and activated recall. It didn't take long for the serpent to show up. Teleporting a couple of times didn't bring me to safety, so I read ?Teleport Level and waited for recall to kick in.
Next up ... another reshuffle of equipment with the intention of wearing armor of Shiva's Avatar again.
The Set of Cesti of Fingolfin was a straight upgrade for Cambeleg, so I put them on immediately. Maxed DEX, but a bit lower CON. I also tried out the golden crown of Amber. More speed and only missing resistance to nexus. Less AC, unfortunately.
The remaining equipment has to be compared to my other belongings before I decide anything.
I'm a bit low on !Healing, but with 22 !*Healing* I am still in the range suggested as sufficient by debo.
On 6.7.2017 08:59 Ironshod Al wrote: > You hear a grinding sound. (x200)
That's me grinding for consumables before the final fight.
The problem with grinding is that eventually you'll run into a really bad situation. And then your character will die.
I was waiting for ?Recall to work its magic when Nodens decided to show up. I had been avoiding him earlier, but this time he decided to follow my teleports twice. The breath from the GWoMC was survivable. Ditto the attacks from Nodens. But not both of them combined.
This was a fun game. Frustrating for a long while, but because of everyone who taught me the finer details and differences from Angband, the frustrations eventually turned to fascination with some of the little details that are important in this game. I have learned a ton of stuff that will help me in future games.
Thanks to everyone who offered their advice.
