Yep, didn't get unlucky last time. Seems like something wrong with XP allocation. Gonna try to either delay the crown of mastery, or start with a higher grace.

Looking at http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=15719, not sure how he survived to 550 feet on a 1-1-4-5 Naugrim start with 4 evasion, 0 stealth, 0 archery, and no song of mastery. He also made a Amulet of Grace <+1> without a means to restore grace (since he was a dwarf) and on his first forge...looks like 2 affinity + 5 grace + 6 smithing + song of aule would barely get him to 15 smithing. Still a puzzling choice since it hurts him more than helps him. He managed to find all artefacts so I guess he didn't reset levels all too often. He also got a grace point on 400 feet through 10 smithing, 15 song, or 10 perception. My guess would be through smithing...1000 XP for the skill since he skipped enchantment. Not too bad. Hardiness and 7 will by 450 feet. For wights? Feel like those should be least of his concerns since he can just shut the door on them. All of this suggests that his melee would be quite low. He has to kill things else he can't smith, with very little to show for all that smithing, song, or will investment.

Anyone has any idea how he did it? Never mind orc champions, by 550 feet, you would be meeting easterling warriors, easterling archers, mountain trolls, orc champions, distended spiders, wargs, giants, sulrauko, and orc captains all over the place. 0 stealth means you'll get noticed right away, never mind all the noise you'd make smithing. And there are no slaying weapons against giants and easterlings.

Meanwhile I have Noldor dexterity and strength, have song of mastery, and I can't even kill a orc champion on 350 feet.

For orc champions I tend to switch to the bigger Greatsword or Battle Axe

I had a +2 shield of deflection. Not sure ditching that for a two hander would have been wise. One handed bastard sword maybe...but I was simply taking too much damage.

"The Gharik line goes back at least a couple hundred". you're going to die. often. but once it takes off its a thing of beauty.

@hugo "switched to" implies that you had stopped using it :p

Right, but I can't help but think either he got lucky that run, or had some sort of epiphany of gameplay that doesn't show through his dump file. Maybe early staff of warding? Horn of thunder? Because looking at his combat stats, there's just no way he can stand toe to toe with anything I listed.

1-1-4-5 start, a ring of accuracy +2, and a ring of evasion +2. At most 4 evasion investment. Unknown melee investment. But not a whole lot due to all the XP into will, song, and smithing. He had 10 smithing that early. I don't think his melee was over 8 or 9.

So putting it all together, he had let's say 9 melee + 1 dexterity + 2 from ring = 12 melee. And 4 evasion + 1 dexterity + 2 from ring = 7 evasion. I had 12 melee, 10 evasion at 350 feet. With 9 song and song of mastery, I couldn't even kill an orc champion. And you're telling me he had worse stats than me at 550 feet? Was he able to kill a giant? A horde of easterlings? Wargs? Distended spiders? Orc captains? It just doesn't add up unless he found some clever trick. Ofc, I didn't play 1.2.1 mpa. But it shouldn't be that much easier than 1.3.0 right?

@seraph - I meant to say that I usually rely on the Greatsword and Battle Axe. In my heyday, I almost always mained these in most cases ;)

He didn't have any source of mastery until the 550'. Mastery should not be cosidered an asset in the early game, it hardly does anything without significant investment or grace boosting.

I get that. My point was that I had mastery and better stats and couldn't take out a orc champion even from full HP. I guess gondolin spears would have helped. But orcs aside, there are a lot of even worse threats by 550 feet. The problem is you can't win 1v1s in melee range like ever with the stats that he had, because you'd simply get hit too often. And not ever engaging in melee with 0 stealth by 550 feet is unfeasible.
