I know in my heart that the intention for imitators is to get a few quality pets and barf out 900-damage fire breaths or 450 damage shard breaths as often as possible. Double that if you want to spend 100 HP on the imitator class skill. Imitators solo face a major problem: The breathers/hard-hitting casters who you'll be fighting almost invariably resist the element you want to imitate back at them, and even worse they don't cast them regularly enough for imitated damage to be meaningful.

So what does that mean? Melee 98% of the time. Thankfully imitators can fight respectably after the first few levels and I had plenty of races to choose from, the foremost being cyclops, sprite, and later half-titan and klackon and spectre for passwall. That's just my style; tonberry is also very powerful, but I try to avoid them because of how out of wack their damage is. Beastman mutations also are reshuffled each transformation, so that's not going to be a wow. Also note some forms drain HP, so they can't be in use permanently.

All that said, there are some excellent to stupendous utility options as a doppelganger. Ent's create forest. Skeleton's restore life. Amberite's restore stats. Hobbit's create food. The shop selling bonuses from various races, which let the money flow in. And a certain race has a certain set of abilities that breaks the doppleganger game wide open, but I'll let you figure that one out.

What to do about the lack of healing when transformed? As a dedicated wilderness visitor, all it takes is some patience for a staff of cure wounds to drop; alternatively you could risk it in a dungeon with high stealth and some !ccw. And if you can find a vampiric weapon, well then things get a lot easier. It's an irritating mechanic, but doppelganger has many strengths even without constant regeneration.

Not wanting to leave things to chance, I went devices for the Serpent. The AC and damage, while acceptable for much of the game, just wasn't Serpent (or Nodens, or Morgoth, or Unicorn) quality, and with anti-summoning I figured I could get away with a lot. Imagine my surprise when a bigtime summon got through: Azathoth and his cadre of 30 shamblers plus a few caaws. Fortunately a teleport and 6 genocides got rid of that problem, although Azathoth stayed around practically the entire Serpent fight. Remember to kill those uniques when you can, people!

So, after all is said and done, I'd highly recommend doppelganger to anyone looking for a change of pace. I would not recommend imitator - maybe you'll "get it" if you play one, but I didn't get it. This was very much a brute-force win - lots of bopping with a weapon, very little actual imitation.

So where are we at? Win rate: A fine ~4%. Post-level 25 win rate: A decent ~16%. Until next time.

Yeah, that tonberry damage is just crazy. I was wielding an average midgame weapon (rapier of the duelist) and getting 50% more damage as a tonberry than as a half-titan (600 vs 400). And only at the cost of 5 speed and confusion vulnerability! Admittedly it evens out a little more with higher dice and stuff, but still. Very competitive as far as races go.
