0-4-4-4 start this time...figured I want more dex since that boosts your stealth score.

Hm...maybe I should pump evasion to get sprinting early on. Or get vanish? I don't get detected much, but every time, if I get detected, it's over unless I can reset the level through a chasm or stairs.

Doing pacifists? I really love running them. These are a few starts you might like.

Stat priority: Gra > Dex > Str > Con

You need strength for bashing doors in emergencies. You're going to die anyway, so Con is useless. Dex is more useful early game, but grace gives you more voice, which is more important in the long run.

Doriath: 3 Stealth, Disguise, 3 Perception, Keen Senses, 6 (7?) Song, Song of Silence. Pump stealth to about 10, you shouldn't need to buy any more skills from it. Grab Listen, then get song as high as possible and buy Lorien. Get Lore-Master somewhere in there. Add melee as needed for throne. Hope for sharpness.

Finarfin: 8 Perception, Keen Senses, Listen, 3 Stealth. Grab disguise on at 100 ft, pump stealth, then song. Best start, I think. Use Listen to avoid enemies, and you'll rarely need to trust your stealth.

Beor: 7 Evasion, Leaping, Sprinting, 5 Stealth. Proceed as per usual. Probably works better with Noldor Any-House, but I like the flavor. One of my favorite starts, you'll probably run more than hide for a while.

Don't linger on any level. As soon as you find any way down, even a chasm, take it. You'll get most of your experience from diving and encountering deep enemies, plus Lore-Master. The only exception is that it can sometimes be wise to linger at 400-500 for a lantern. Inscribe slaying weapons with "!a" to use them as alarms. Doriath is usually better, but Gondolin can be good in the first 2/3 of the dungeon. You can pull off the throne-room (barely) with about 15 song. Sing Silence whenever you have it. Hope for Angrist, like, really hard. Scum 900-950 for good items. Potions of voice and grace, staves of slumber (maybe worth a bit of will investment) and warding, anything sharp/big diced. 7 melee and sharpness will get you a Sil, if you have time.

Silence is usually better to be sung than Lorien, but sometimes Lorien will save you in a pinch. Cats sleep easy. Woven themes is not necessary for the throne room, if you sneak around the back, but could help a lot.

Wear equipment only for stats and effects, since protection won't help you, and every ten pounds lowers your stealth by 1. If Free Action boots and a True Sight Helm weigh ten pounds together, they're worth it, but look for better sources.

The ascent hurts. Just run. Most games, I don't grab sprinting until the ascent. Once you start putting points into Evasion, it's worthwhile to grab Exchange Places, since you won't die as soon as you're adjacent to a wolf.

Theoretically, you could do pacifists with a smithing start. Enchantment gets you some quick stealth, and a Crown of Mastery. I've never been able to get a Mastery pacifist going, but I want to. Also Elbereth/Fear, which is fun, but keeps dying. You could also run a pacifist without Song, and use Will/Slumber. Never tried it, but I think clouded did?

Listen is the best skill, because it lets you play smart. Ta-da! I wrote a guide to pacifism!

This was my doriath pacifist, which is an alternative to stealth, Sprinting+Elbereth. The numbers in the notes are stealth pts, you can see I didn't have a lot till late:

Doriath pacifists suffer from a door opening problem, unfortunately you have to spend pts on it, though maybe str+song of silence works there. The best advice I can give you is dive quick. You can never afford to cover all your bases early. Quicker you move the smaller the window of opportunity for something to go wrong.

Woah, that's a lot to take in. I figured you wouldn't actually want to reset levels too much since you're more reliant on artefact drops than other playstyles (e.g. Angrist). If Angrist spawns and you reset the level, it'll never spawn again. And worse, you won't even know it spawned until you check after game through mpa.

@T-Mick Will give those builds a try. Currently still trying to get familiar with monster perception/will (both of which I don't usually pay attention to). My largest source of deaths is not knowing my limits yet as to what can or cannot detect me. That and when I turn on stealth mode, sometimes patrolling monsters will bump into me and notice me, then shout, and before I can get Lorien, there's just no way to put them back to sleep/patrolling mode.

@wobbly I went with 0 strength this run because I figured I'll pump perception fairly high, get eye for detail, and use song of freedom to open doors. Otherwise, song of silence + some bashing. Usually just try going around another way though since that makes the least noise.

Anyways, I'll continue playing around with it. Thanks for the tips.
