After subtlety worked so well last time I want to try making some kind of artefact critical-stick. I managed to avoid dying to Shadows on 400' due to the power of true sight potions and booze. Wear-IDing jewelery is a bad plan.

chasms... y tho?

there is almost surely a forge on this floor too based on my turncount...

i might not see another forge until 800-900' now if there is one on this floor...

+5 deathblade. Good enough to win the game with, or at least carry me until a masterpiece weapon. I really love deathblades. And it's 1.5lb too! Sick. I just need Follow-Through, Momentum, and Subtlety...

Found Anguirel. I don't think I'm going to be able to make any weapons that are a whole lot better than anything I have right now... as usual most smithing gear you make is inferior to what you find on the ground except for rings of accuracy and evasion (and the good old round shield of deflection)

just found _revelations. Hopefully I can get the smithing kit together soon. I don't think I'll take it as high as on previous characters, but who knows. I think i will make a masterpiece amulet this time around with woven themes and con<+3>.

I was about to go work on my smithing kit but I fell through a false floor again on the way to the forge! Epic!

Why does the game insist on making this playstyle maximally unenjoyable?

False floor again. I'm just going to quit. This is so stupid.

On 22.1.2017 05:10 ripforareason wrote:
So I missed at least two forges, probably more, due to false floors. I usually walk around with 7 perception and 3 grace in most games. This game I walked around with 5 grace and 5 perecption, for a total of 10, and fell through a ton more false floors than usual.

I guess I should have taken Eye for Detail but it feels wrong to take an ability I would consider useless in a normal game just because of the way the smithing system is designed.

On 22.1.2017 05:12 protopulse wrote:
LOL. Yea, idk. I think false floors are a fine concept, but because of how forge generation and artefact generation works (even if you don't see them, they won't respawn again), it just ends up being frustrating.

Same with chasms. The ones who need leaping the least gets the easiest access to it (i.e. combat builds that can put a lot of experience into evasion and take leaping), while smiths, who actually need it the most because sometimes you get forges that generate on part of the map that is only accessible via crossing chasms, are left out to dry.

At least you have that deathblade and anguirel.

Eye for detail doesn't save you from false floors. I've tried it. 10 perception + eye for detail. Still fall through false floors. At this point, I think you need to hit "search" like you would in Brogue...that or get song of freedom?

Well, there's a big disadvantage to walking around singing all the time, you will attract enemies to you. I entertained this idea but I'm not sure I want to go with it. Every time I look at my morgues I'm reminded of the futility of smithing. I don't wield anything I crafted except rings of accuracy and evasion, until the late end of the 900-950' circuit, for a huge XP defecit and much more annoyance from various enemies due to the lack of Will invesment, constant inventory juggling, and so on. After I've seen how easily you can wreck the throne room with a deathblade and subtlety the whole idea of "oh I can make a masterpiece weapon and kill V easily!" seems sort of pointless.

Didn't realize song of freedom was that loud. Smithing right now does seem to need some buffs...You can get like +4 rings of accuracy/evasion, +2 damage rings, +2 con amulet, great speed ego, etc. that you probably won't ever find on the dungeon floor. But all that is still not worth it because of the required XP investment into smithing, turns wasted crafting items, and unreliable forge generation, which is a constant source of anxiety - will my next forge spawn across a chasm, will I get false floored before I reach it, will it be 2 use, what if I get forced off a floor before I get a chance to explore it. Smithing is supposed to be a way to beat the RNG, but instead it's actually the most affected by it.

Another thing I realized is...the idea of a "smithing kit" actually hinders your options as a smith. It's just another hoop you have to jump through to make the stuff you actually want, and another XP sink making those gloves of the forge or smithing warhammer. The reason you don't actually wear anything you make until very late is 1) natural dungeon drops are too good 2) smithing costs are too high 3) you're too busy using your forges to make your smithing kit/loremaster crown

Was really hoping for 1.4 update this year. Too bad that it probably won't be for a while.

Honestly I think I would be okay with smithing kits being removed (so no more gloves of the forge, lesser jewels of grace, etc.) and smithing costs being reduced, or maybe Song of Aule being buffed. The inventory juggling is really frustrating. If only we had 3 more inventory slots...

Agreed. Out of all the roguelikes I've played so far, I think inventory space is tightest in Sil. I'm not averse to playing the ID minigame in Sil. Yes, it's more of a chore to do so (especially in vanilla Sil) compared to many other roguelikes, but it's still doable. The issue comes from inventory management. Trying to hold onto your smithing kit and all of the potions and herbs you need to survive. Your artefacts. Swappable slay weapons. Resists items. And on top of that, un-ID'ed items? It's just too much. Inventory juggling really isn't enjoyable.
