Btw, I'm loving this start. On a non-archer, there's no need to take weaponsmithing, so I can just go with a jeweller start. I get 200 XP for IDing =accuracy and =evasion as well. The main competing option I see is making round shield of deflection with leather armor of resilience, but I think those two rings really help makes up for Naurim's worse dexterity. I feel like a Noldor already!

(another possibility is round shield of deflection + a single ring of accuracy. that may be the best actually.)

Hmm...power or finesse? I feel like finesse outclasses power, because you always want a high melee...high melee means you hit more often, but on the off chance your opponent rolls poorly, you can get criticals.

Power gives you higher max damage, but decreases chance of criticals. Finesse requires no sacrifice and just flat out increases your critical rate. I'm tempted to take finesse even on battle axes...

power tree is lackluster compared to the finesse tree and 2h weapons are generally not that good

It'd be one thing if power gave you better base damage, but higher max damage is quite unreliable. 3d9 vs 3d10 with reduced crit...one might argue the 3d9 is superior. 3d9 vs 4d8 with reduced crit would be a more interesting comparison I think.

What's in the power tree anyways? Charge and knockback? Can't even go parry/riposte when you take up an axe because parry does nothing...

On 19.1.2017 17:51 ripforareason wrote:
power > Charge > momentum > strength
vs.
finesse > follow-through > momentum > strength

knock back is also in there for power, but finesse has 2 weapon fighting, subtlety, etc.

On 19.1.2017 18:01 protopulse wrote:
I don't really see the point of momentum for weapons past 2 lbs. Say you start with 3 strength. You get strength in the melee tree. You now have 4 strength, perfect for a 2 lb weapon with momentum.

You get 3 additional strength with charge, but you can't charge continually. And you get 3 additional strength with strength potions, but you don't use those all that often either.

Now you could find more strength through items...but a strength ring/gauntlets of strength aren't all that common, unless you were a smith. If you forge 2 +2 strength rings...that'd pull you up to 7 strength. With strength potions, you could use a 5 lb weapon effectively. Without, 3.5 lb. So I guess momentum's mostly for smiths or characters who use low weight weapons? If you wanted rapid attack/two weapon fighting, it tanks your strength another 3 points...

On 19.1.2017 18:02 protopulse wrote:
Actually, maybe knockback would occur frequently enough for you to get off continuous charges...?

On 19.1.2017 18:04 ripforareason wrote:
it's still useful for 3-3.5 lb weapons. with that said, momentum makes heavier weapons less than useful.

On 19.1.2017 18:04 protopulse wrote:
Man, 2 weapon fighting/subtlety/parry/finesse/riposte just seems so much better. Turning defense into offense and attacking twice as often.

On 19.1.2017 18:08 protopulse wrote:
I think the issue is dwarves get low dex to begin with. And dexterity is linked to both to-hit AND evasion. Now if they get power tree skills on top of that, as well as heavy armour, that diminishes the little to-hit and evasion they have, so they are just sitting ducks who can land hits less often than a drunkard.

On 19.1.2017 18:08 protopulse wrote:
I'll just have to try the power tree myself and see how it goes.

Yea. Still need a few games to get the hang of that.

God damn the RNG this game forcing me to play the ID minigame. Got -2 strength drain and -1 con drain from eating all those herbs (wight also got in a lucky hit despite the fact that my greatsword of final rest should be demolishing them).

I'm also not making robes of great speed this game. Boots of great speed are vastly more expensive, so there's no hurry to pump up my smithing as much as in my Noldor archer's game.
