On 17.1.2017 23:30 ripforareason wrote: Should have made 2x acc+2 and either crown of grace or boots of FA at that 200' forge. I don't get why you keep making helms of clarity... you don't need it until you start getting Dragons. Of the non-elemental resists, light > free action = rFear >>>>> everything else. Clarity and true sight are nice if you find them but not overly important.
On 17.1.2017 23:42 protopulse wrote: I couldn't have made any jewelry. This run was all sorts of fucked up. What happened was I spawned on an island with chasms on both sides. I reckoned there was a good chance there was a forge on the level judging by how many turns has passed since the last one, and my only choice to reach it was to pump all my experience into evasion and grab leaping. I was 100 experience short so I ate a random herb. It turned out to be terror.
So I had 75 XP left when I reached the forge. Could only craft armor/weapons. I was between getting a helmet of brilliance and helmet of clarity, but I went for clarity because I didn't want to have to deal with grace drain that early. True sight was way out of range. And I never make defiance helmets unless it's rather late and I still haven't found a source of rFear, because defiance helmets take experience to craft.
On 17.1.2017 23:45 protopulse wrote: I try to avoid making gloves of the forge/archery, rings of perception, and helmet of defiance as much as I can because I want to maximize the experience that go to stats/skills. The dungeon can semi-reliably drop some combination of them (e.g. I found a natural +3 gauntlets of the forge in my last run so I didn't need to toss 300 experience).
I originally didn't want to make the +2 gloves of the forge at all, but after fiddling around with other builds, I concluded it was the best compromise so you aren't completely gimped early game.
On 17.1.2017 23:57 protopulse wrote: Jesus. I'm 2000 turns faster than my last game to reach 650 feet. But I'm also down 6000 experience. Hope I don't encounter any death blades. I really need to come up with a way to deal with raukos fast. I don't think it'll be long before they start showing up, and I still haven't gotten a chance to craft a rauko-slaying weapon. I also don't have rFire...or rFear. And arrows of sharpness. Or song of sharpness. Maybe scum 600 feet a bit more?

with a +17 bonus to smithing, you have a few interesting breakpoints for this char. here are some items I like:
at 30 smithing:
Amulets of Con/Gra <+2>
at 32 smithing:
- crown (+1)[+1] (rFear, Clarity, Song of Slaying, Woven themes)
at 33 smithing:
-Rings of Acc(+4), EV[+4]
-helm (rFear, Clarity, Con<+1>) with an attack and ev bonus for 33 smithing
at 36 smithing:
- boots (+1)[+1, 1d1]<+1> dex and free action
- shadow cloak [+4] (rF, rC, rFear) with stealth +0 (this is a useful trick, numerical - special bonuses are bad on shadow cloaks because you can't adjust different bonuses individually, so you HAVE to increase stealth when taking e.g. a stat)
at 37 smithing: cloak (+1)[+2]<+1>, rCold
at 38 smithing: helm (rFear, Clarity, Con<+2>)
at 39 smithing:
-cloak (+1)[+1]<+2> dex
-rings of damage <+2>

As for options, that's a lot. I'll probably get a source of con for sure. I'll have to think it over. I generally feel rings of damage should be worth more than dex, especially when flaming arrows adds extra hit dice. Another thing is as an archer you really don't want to get hit at all, so I value offense over defense. e.g. why you see me making 2 sets of +2 accuracy rings rather than one of evasion and one of accuracy. And also why I'd prefer 2 +4 accuracy rings to 2 +2 dexterity rings.

On 18.1.2017 04:58 ripforareason wrote: I had 17 revelations charges. You have Belthronding already. fwiw, I think Masterpiece should always be used on a weapon, since a weapon gives the most improvement at the margin to your character. You found 7 forges and have about 8k turns left, so ideally you can expect to find 3-4 more. Since you haven't made a smithing warhammer you are sort of in a bind with regards to being able to make useful things because you're running out of time. You might just want to make a war hammer with smithing<+3> and masterpiece, and gradually burn some smithing points on rings of damage<+2>, improved free action boots, a helm with rFear and a con bonus, etc. since you might not have time for a masterpiece bow. You really want to make the smithing war hammer earlier if possible...
On 18.1.2017 05:00 ripforareason wrote: Oh, if you have no revelations you'll be lucky to find 1 or 2 forges, but you'll get a decent amount of experience, so you should be able to afford abilities you might want for the throne room (song of slaying, woven themes) and also take Dexterity. Hopefully you find Maeglin and kill him for his armor, but this character is probably destroying everything easily enough.
On 18.1.2017 05:05 protopulse wrote: Okay, here we go. My first 3 use forge after hitting 950 feet. I found Dagmor, so rFear is no longer a concern. I'm a bit anxious I won't get to make much stuff, but it feels shitty to back out of smithing now just because I haven't found _revelations. So I'll go ahead and sacrifice this forge to make a warhammer of smithing with masterpiece. I concluded the same thing. Putting masterpiece on the hammer over the extra smithing point is more efficient, well, as long as your base smithing is below 25.
On 18.1.2017 05:07 protopulse wrote: If I take dexterity, get song of slaying/woven themes, I won't really have much experience to pull towards smithing though.

If I just run around 950 feet forever, I doubt I'll die. It's 1000 feet I'm worried about, especially because I haven't done it before. My low HP pool is a bit concerning since that means I have less room for mistakes.

On 18.1.2017 05:14 ripforareason wrote: You don't need that much more XP in smithing. You can hit 48 difficulty with masterpiece, which is good enough for a 2.5lb (+3,2d7) bow with rapid fire and Danger. The only real difficulty is making rings of damage<+2> if you want them, for which you would want another 3 points in smithing. You only have 58k XP so you can expect to pool another 15-18k clearing 900-950 a few times looking for forges.
On 18.1.2017 05:15 ripforareason wrote: You definitely want an amulet of con<+2>. Since you're using Dagmor as an rFear/Light stick, you may want to go with a helm with con<+2> to get up to 8 con.

Once I realized that the key to the ascension is to keep moving, ignore monsters, and just go through the first stairs you see, it wasn't too bad. As for getting the sils out, I ended up breaking Saithnar on the third sil attempt. Somehow got the last sil out with just a greatsword lying around the floor of Morgoth's hall.

Some other thoughts in no particular order.
I'm really glad this run made it all the way, considering the forge troubles both early on and when scumming 950 feet (Only found 2 forges in 9k turns because of a lack of _revelations. In fact, there were no revelations all game. So I only made half of what was actually possible and ended up tossing experience into archery/evasion/song/will instead of smithing).
Belthronding was nice, but by the time I found it, it really didn't matter that much. Game was by far the hardest in the mid game and post throne room.
Smithing with Aule is annoying. Smithing already takes a large number of turns. Having to wait to "catch your breath" just makes it worse. And as an aside, I have no idea how Psi was able to smith after the throne room, with such a ridiculously high monster spawn rate. I bet it took a lot of patience. Seems like Sil just wasn't desired with a "post-game" in mind.
I was -7 stat drained at one point on the ascent. I almost never made out of 950 feet alive. Even with permahaste, it didn't matter because every door I opened, there would be a pack of vampire lords, troll pack, unrelenting horror, or gwathrauko behind it. I just couldn't find a stairs up. And by the time I realized 950 feet was too dangerous to stay on and what the ascent was all about, I couldn't even backtrack to a stairs down to refresh the level and get a second chance at 950 feet. 3 sil curse didn't help either.
Throne room wasn't remotely dangerous for this build, though if Tabber didn't warn me about the tension mechanic or the side hallways, there was a definite chance of something going wrong. If I had _revelations and could see the floor layout, that would have been entirely different. I really hate how much _revelations completely changes things.
The surface level wasn't too bad...although the abnormal number of monsters certainly gave me a scare, especially the trolls. A look in the postgame screen showed that if I stayed to try to clear everything, I would have very likely died or ran out of arrows or !voice first. It feels like archery's really great at shredding single targets (e.g. Morgoth was no issue when I had 80+ arrows of piercing/rapid fire/flaming arrows/song of piercing/permahaste/halving his evasion), but not great at mob clearing compared to melee (who get access to opportunist, zone of control, whirlwind attack, rage herb, follow through, flanking, and have no need to worry about arrows).
MPA-Sil has a nice feature where if you take a save file from vanilla Sil over, it will show you what artefacts you missed. I checked and found that I missed Tinfang Gelion, Azaghal, Dramborleg, and Anglachel. Honestly probably wouldn't have made a difference, although Anglachel would have been very welcome. I took a ridiculous number of turns trying to cut out the last sil after it broke my Saithnar. Had I known how hard it would be, I would never have dropped Nargil.
I keep forgetting to name my artefacts...
Wonder where I have room to cut turns and improve my score. How is score calculated here anyways? Definitely a lot of things to improve upon though, especially if I found _revelations. Still got a lot of other builds to try out as well. I suppose melee is up next. Then I'll mess with naugrim and edains.
On 18.1.2017 15:37 ripforareason wrote: The main thing you can improve would be diving faster while gaming the turncount. Finding rev would also help...
On 19.1.2017 02:18 debo wrote: Playing a smith makes it difficult to win quickly, I think. Trying a more straightforward melee build will probably help reduce your turncount if you're interested in improving your scores.
On 19.1.2017 20:59 protopulse wrote: I tend to play really sloppy on pure melee builds. It's fun for a couple levels because I just afk tab away any enemies and feel like a demigod, then I get bored and stop paying attention. When something finally arrives that poses a real threat to my survival, I tend to overestimate my combat ability and try to take it head on, forget to use consumables, and just die. Smithing keeps me focused since I constantly have to balance my experience usage with forge generation.
#1 on the ladder or highscores doesn't really interest me, but #1 in a specfic race/class combo on 1.3? Sure.
Is score just a function of turncount?
