I really don't think it was any lower than that or I would have quaffed a potion. Since I automatically dismiss more messages, I didn't see my HP warning messages. I just find those messages get in the way of gameplay too much.

I had enough smithing to craft robes of great speed at the time of my death. If you check up there, I had 20 smithing, but I wasn't wielding my +3 gauntlets of the forge, lesser jewel of grace, or crown of grace.
