Tried the enchantment start, and have to say, I really like it. I didn't think I was going to like it, because it seemed pointless to waste 200 XP on forging gloves when you could find them later in the dungeon fairly reliably. But it really smooths out the early game.

Normally, it's a 9 smithing start + 1 (Feanor) + 3 (grace) when I try to make +2 rings of accuracy on my first forge at 100 feet. 13 smithing total.

Instead, I only need 6 smithing + 1 (Feanor) + 3 (grace) + 2 (gloves of the forge), for a total of 12 smithing when I do the enchantment start. I can grab the extra point in smithing anytime before I see my 2nd forge (since you still need 13 for the rings), which gives me a lot of time to establish myself. That point also costs less because you're not as reliant on your stats due to the gloves of the forge. You still need to get jewelry for 1000 experience...

Or perhaps this game was only easier because I tried to ID stuff early on and got that boost in experience instead of hogging it all waiting until I make my loremaster crown?

Either way, this run looks quite good. I checked and I have enough smithing to craft grace amulet, jewel, and crown. So no more smithing investment needed for quite a while. I'll have to put masterpiece and weaponsmithing on a glove or warhammer artefact eventually, but that's not for a very long time. Smithing kit and a faenorian lamp of brightness probably next on my list. Then perhaps a smithing warhammer and a cloak/helm with resists. If I can make more sources of con, that would be great too. Or a branded/sharpness/vampiric weapon. Or a boot with great speed...lots of option when I get there

I have better combat stats than my last run thanks to the round shield of deflection. And if I can find a !constitution or an herb of restoration, I'll have a decent pool of health as well so I don't get cheesed by raukers and giants.

Nearly had a heart attack clearing the whispering shadows out of that room though. The entire room was flooded. Thank god I had that longsword of final rest around or else I would have had to given up on that forge probably. Also the staff of light. I'm glad I kept it around.
