I had a map around 150 feet where there were no stairs down. My guess is there was a secret door leading to the rest of the level somewhere, and my perception (6 or so due to a lot of perception ring finds) wasn't enough to root it out.

Though from my point of view, enchantment isn't worth it unless you're going for some niche builds in the first place. Armors of deflection/protection is inferior to artistry products. A +1 grace amulet or crown doesn't seem all that appealing either, considering dwarves have no easy way to restore grace (lembas). And gloves of the forge can be found on the dungeon floor semi-reliably without you having to invest 200 XP into it for nothing. So really, unless you were going for boots of speed, a gondolin weapon, a crown of brilliance, or early boots of free action, there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to go enchantment.

With regarding to smithing gloves in particular, if you want to hit 12 smithing early on, you can just sacrifice a bit of XP from melee/evasion. You can survive just fine by spawning the forge on 50 feet, and sneaking around instead of fighting everything. I don't think it has any major impact. You do lose 1100+1200 = 2300 XP, and you only save 200 XP, but when you get to your first forge, regardless of what you make, your odds of survival should skyrocket.
