also this was a nice little variant of wobbly's song of the trees strat. although i'm not sure the light gained by dropping a stack of lesser jewels is as much as i thought.

You really want the mithril for fenorian lamps. Although a lesser jewel is still better then nothing against shadows & sometimes the difference between seeing things or not.

some initial testing reveals: a stack of lesser jewels in one spot does not add more light than one. spreading them around does. is this intentional? also vs light-sensitive enemies, it is better to put the light around them rather than yourself.

Not 100% sure. The manual lists the morale penalty as the light level on the players square. I think for seeing things with a small light it's often easier if you get them to move on to the light. You'd have to check the rolls window to be sure.

i checked the rolls. -2 when i threw the light under a monster. -1 when i dropped one (more had no effect) on my square (next to the monster). scatha's comment here also confirms part of it. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=18612
