Fun character. Thanks for sharing. Never seen anyone take smithing up to 20. Seems like it would have been cheaper to invest in Aule instead of those last few points, but it wouldn't have the same style.

Thanks HM. Forgot to name the helm which made me sad :(

@phaethon, taken it higher now :) I think that is my highest ever investment in smithing. Smithing points of course count double for the final masterpiece. Though with this char I forgot that masterpiece requires enchantment so I need to put it on my gear, but I've already wasted experience crafting those, which is a shame! I may yet take Aule. Need to do some sums...

Gutted I can't put grace on a cloak any more. That's just mean.

Awesome! What was the smithing cost? Do you remember?

It cost 98 including 28 smithing from masterpiece.

Tictac is not a bad archer with that bow and arrow despite 0 investment.

Interested in trying a smithing build myself since it looks like a lot of fun. It looks like you didn't start out with smithing this game though. How did you learn armoursmith, jeweller, and artifice with 0 points in smithing?

I actually invested 28 points in smithing. The masterpiece ability allows you to "spend" your skill points to cover additional smithing costs on an item. Therefore I used up all 28 points when crafting my sword.

Oh, I see. Forgot to ask. Do you recall how many forges you saw that game? My deepest depth was 500 feet, so it seems incredible to me that you were able to forge that many artifacts (20? maybe more?), some of them even after reaching 1000 feet. Can you basically scum for them infinitely?

And what did you use to pump your smithing to 98? I know Song of Aule, grace potion, +smithing gear, and +grace gear can help, but I must be missing something.

28 smithing (base) + 4 smithing, 4 song (war hammer) + 3 grace, 3 song (dagger) + 4 smithing (gloves), 4 grace (crown) + 4 song (cloak) + 4 grace (robe) + 3 grace, 3 song (amulet) + 2 grace (lamp) + grace potion.

28 + 8 smithing + 14 song + 16 grace + 3 grace from potion

36 smithing + 19 from grace + 8 smithing = 63 smithing

6 song (base) + 19 song (from grace) + 14 song = 39 song

Song of Aule grants you 1 point of smithing per 4 points of song for another 9 smithing.

63 smithing + 9 smithing is only 72.

You can scum for them indefinitely once you have killed Morgoth which is what I did here. Other than the lamp, everything in the dump was probably forged post throneroom.

28 base skill points
28 skill points spent using Masterpiece
20 from maxed grace (4 from char, 16 from equipment)
10 from Aule (40 song)
8 from hammer + gloves
3 from enchanted forge
1 from being Feanorian

98

Think I double counted 8 smithing by accident. So the real number would be 64. 34 smithing unaccounted for?

Oh, I didn't see your comment. Looks like I missed a bit here and there, but the largest portion was from misunderstanding how masterpiece worked (doubling your base smithing). Thanks for the insight!

Would probably be tough if not impossible to forge half of those things before being forced down to 1000 feet, but still, looks like end game smithing is a lot of fun! Something to look forward to once I get good enough to beat the game I suppose.

Heard from a friend that smithing builds aren't too great in 1.3.0 and they had gotten overnerfed though (not the way you did it, but starting out with Feanor or Nogrod and just going Armorsmith/Enchantment from the getgo).

On 15.12.2016 18:53 Psi wrote:
So yes, masterpiece doubles your smithing for that one item, but then that's all your points gone, so you better make sure it is worth it!

Smithing has generally been nerfed version by version. However for 1.3 I think it is more that drops in the dungeon have been improved so there is not a lot of point in early game smithing. As you'll see from my notes, other than using jeweler, I didn't forge anything until 950'.

Patashu's recent thread somewhat reflects that as well. Jeweller (29), Weaponsmith (24), and Artifice (17) are the three most commonly used skills in the smithing tree in 1.3.0. Looks like people have shied away from relying on smithing to create early defensive sets due to higher quality dungeon drops. My guess for why weaponsmith and artifice are frequently used is to help create a weapon capable of hurting Morgorth, and perhaps weapon drops are not as generous as armor drops in the dungeon.

One reason I can think of to use armorsmithing early on still is to get loremaster on an artefact for only 500 experience (and skipping over lorekeeper entirely). Of course, you still need to dump experience into smithing for artifice/smithing, find a 3 use forge, use up some turns, and probably dump experience into perception later anyways for better trap detection. But smithing can be used for other purposes down the road, whereas the experience sunk into lorekeeper and loremaster is a one time deal.

Feanorian archers often taken weaponsmith as an easy way to replenish arrows for minimal outlay.
