A trick I find useful with Spiders, and dragons is to lure them back to a corner.
If you can go around the corner without them following, then they wont chase since they are territorial, and you can basically 'scum' for good RNG by backing off and resting if they hit you.
Doesn't work with fast monsters though, so don't try it against a Deathblade or Smaug!

What strikes me as a bit dicey (besides being injured) is that I can't see a source of clarity on your dump. It's will 13 vs 10 if it confuses you. I would of been happier stepping back & backing behind the doorway then returning healed up. You've just got more leeway at full health & from the doorway your odds of getting out of sight quickly if it confuses you are much better.

As a bonus 1 square back the ruby serpent is more likely to do some of the work for you!
