Rage-Mages are hard :-(

I've tried them a few times and generally they die very early in their careers.

Grizwold here is probably only alive because of the artifact axe 'Amanitaceae Aroma' which has drain life (among its other enchantments), but his actual melee damage output is really low, AC is a pitiful 28 and I had a lot of trouble locating Rage spellbooks for him.

Still, he has got a couple of decent bits of equipment like Elvenkind boots I found early on. If his AC was a bit nicer, I'd probably attempt to make him ride some beasts.

Ah, another class from Chengband I haven't gotten around to playtesting. I don't think they are supposed to be strong in melee, but rather are designed to be effective against spell casting monsters (via distance stunning with shout).

I'd like to hear your thoughts/opinions on this class design as you play.

I've been meaning to go back to the rage-mage after I finish with my current psion. Perhaps with . . . an android, maybe.

Just wait, chris . . . we'll get you to give a little love to all the underused classes yet!

Hi Chris, these are my thoughts so far.

Rage-mages are very fun... but frustratingly vulnerable. I suspect you need a really tough race like a half-troll to keep them alive. I went with Cyclops to get the boulder throwing racial ability (something to use when I have no SP)

They get some large penalty to AC, so going into melee would seem inadvisable, but on the other hand their SP depletes every round unless they hurt something or get hurt, so paradoxically you do need to get into the front line. The shout spell they have available at level 1 is pretty powerful.

I haven't experimented with it, but because taking damage gives you SP, potions of poison might have some value to Rage-mages, as well as damaging curses.

Their spell list is actually quite good; every spell in the first spell book gets a great deal of use (basically, light area, phase door and sustainance type spells, plus the damaging Shout spell, Focus Rage which essentially trades HP for SP and Veterans Blessing which gives you heroism. I'm not quite so sold on spells in the second spell book. Crude mapping has such a limited range it really is useless. Awesome blow is useful but only if you are confident enough in your HP should it fail/miss, and it has to be lined up correctly to make the most of it. I have a spell called Spell Reaction, which sounds awesome but I haven't yet triggered it. Rage-mages have a large SP pool, but the more full it is, generally the more close to death you are, so you might be teleporting away before you can make the most of it anyway. Regeneration doesn't seem to affect SP in any way (or if it does, it may only slow the rate of depletion? I'm not sure).

Because of the penalty to AC, I'm always looking out for some way to increase it. I think later in the game the range of equipment probably covers the penalty easily, but earlier in the game you just get smashed because of it.

Probably a good ranged weapon would come in handy so you can pump up your SP at range easier. Riding might be a useful way to go, Grizwold rode a Carrion for a while but it got killed early, so back to square one.

Life sucking weaponry is very desirable :-|

One of the beasts from the Vapor Quest swapped my Int and Dex, do my Dex is way crappier than it needs to be. I don't really need Int to do what I do.

With my AC currently at 67, at provides a meaningful boost to my survivability.

Quite tough now. Although my melee damage is still rather low, Grizwold can still go toe-to-toe with enemies and win. Level 25 spell was Whirlwind, which is cool. I've changed my mind about the second Rage spellbook, it is also very versatile (except Crude Mapping. Still rubbish).

Really for now, the challenge is stat gain.

Grizwold the angry one-eyed mutant is doing well enough for himself. Got Sting - which immediately got partially disenchanted by Mime, the Nibelung. But I kicked his ass. Loge, Spirit of Fire, was in the vault. I drank a potion of resistance I found and pelted him with thrown boulders, stunning and harming him. Killed him quickly. Although I am using Sting at the moment, Amanitaceae Aroma might be better in the long run.

Dex is rising and is almost back to where it was before the scramble.

The level 27 spell, Resist Curses, might be useful but I doubt it will get a great deal of use. Whirlwind attack is fantastic, as is Greater Shout [17d8 damage in a breath attack... Fus Ro Dah! Line the enemies up right and I recover all the SP I spend] although spell failure has been pretty inconvenient when it happens. Not only to I waste the SP, but unless I get hurt, I lose even more from the Rage-Mage drain, which tends to rot my tactical planning. The notable omission from the spell list is anything healing, although maybe those are covered in 3rd and 4th spell books? I haven't found any of those yet. Sucks that I'll have to get 8 of each to complete my spell list - assuming Grizwold lives so long.

Equipment is questionable. I swapped White Dragon Scale Mail Armor for an artifact armor which covers heaps of resists - but my AC took a big dive for it. Grizwold is a lot more vulnerable now.

I don't mind burning the spellbooks to learn Rage spells, it's an interesting difference to other classes and it means you don't have to lug around a collection of spellbooks (I know Rage-Mages aren't unique there though). Plus, the spells in the first and second spellbooks are formidable- both in damage and utility, though it is weak on healing and detection. Hopefully one of the third or fourth books has a *heal* type effect - and not just some kind of stink "regen" type spell.

Is there a list of the spells Rage-Mages can learn out there?

Grizwold the infamed curmudgeon has learned all the spells in the first two spell books. He's pretty dangerous, but dispite having 400hp at L28 he is still quite delicate - it isn't uncommon for him to lose 2/3rds of his HPs in one round, and having to beat a retreat. Might have to focus stat boosts on Con for a while instead of Dex.

Although he has access to Shout and Greater Shout, more and more often I choose to have him bomb enemies with boulders. Good damage, stuns, no having to keep track of my SP (Throw Boulders both feeds off and recharges my SP, same as do all my attack spells, but goes straight off HPs if necessary, so I don't have to waste time using the spell Focus Rage), no chance of shattering potions.

I wasn't keeping track of class titles much, but apparently he's "Pissed"

Grizwold. Ungrateful sod extraordinaire.

Found some amazing Gauntlets in the Weapon shop in Angwil. The Set of Gauntlets 'Shambler' (+10,+9) [2,+18] (+4){Dx;ElPoBlNtFe;FaSiHlLv}. Had to sell a vast stack of equipment in order to afford the nearly 200000 to buy it, but I think it'll be worth it. The only bit of equipment I may regret pawning off was the White Dragon Scale Mail.

Found Mook in the Labyrinth. Also down there I defeated Kharis, Alberich and Jaian. None of those cheapskates dropped anything of value though.

Equipping Shambler and Mook gave Grizwold a rather meaningful increase in AC, and he's now fairly dangerous with his current weapon, Sting.

One thing I've noticed is that although Str is the primary stat for Rage-Mages (as their magic keys off that ability and of course it helps their melee), their need for it actually tapers off. Grizwold has 243SP [Level 29 when I'm writing this], but it is rare for his SP to crack 100, and most of his current spells are already sitting at 2% fail rate. The first two stat boosts Grizwold has had went into Str, but everything else went into Dex and Con. I suppose it is worth noting that he gets a total +9 to his Str from is Race, Class and Personality.

This may all change later in the game, but I have a feeling that if Grizwold even lives long enough to get something as amazing as Ragestrike from Dire Ire, we would have already maxed out his stats from potions anyway.

Having not gotten as far as you, I can't vouch for their effectiveness, but 'Armor of Fury' and 'Mana Clash' from book three look good, as well as 'Greater Rage Focus,' 'Spell Turning,' and 'Antimagic Ray' from book four. Perhaps the 'Summon Foo' spells are worth looking at, too.

"Throw Boulder" is a bolt for 104 damage.

There is also "Whirlwind Attack" which is brilliant - attacks every adjacent enemy with full attacks, and "Awesome Blow" which does some very nasty damage [especially if Grizwold is berserk] if I can pin an enemy against a wall, although with Sting I do comparable damage with a full attack. Typically I use Awesome Blow to push enemies away from me.

So ranges and average damages are:

Shout: 9-36 (22.5)
Greater Shout: 21-168 (94.5)
Throw Boulder: A constant 104

Looks like your racial power actually is the most reliable ranged option against single targets . . . methinks the shouts could use a buff--maybe being berserk should give some extra damage to them.

On 6.2.2015 10:18 Cardinal Rob wrote:
Maybe, although it is worth mentioning that Greater Shout can damage (and possibly stun) a couple of dozen enemies at a time in optimal conditions, which I am now finding quite frequent around DL35. Doing that also gets my SP's right up to maximum capacity. Say I collect 20 enemies with one Greater Shout spell, I'm inflicting upwards of 2000 points of damage or so in one turn. Few enemies seem to resist Sound damage.

Throw Boulder is more an attack of convenience, but a good one. I could live without it, but it certainly makes life easier.

The shouts may have greater damage potential, but you're probably not going to be able to make the most of it later on, when it becomes dangerous to have a multitude of enemies within view of you.
