Gained two more levels from basic enchanted equipment, at which point I discovered that if your standing on a shop, your patron fails to give you the item it wants to.
Then gained more levels from the boots Wormtongue dropped.

Trivia; androids cannot be polymorphed, but they can still mutate just as well as their fleshy counterparts.

The first pattern vault I found I didn't get to finish because of things more than double my level, but the arti I did get boosted me 6 levels. A couple non-arti/few-excellent vaults later (and a few where I just barely didn't have enough stone-to-mud) I found one of eccentric rings, where most of the nasty things were neatly blocked off-- without nearby diggers to release them...at least, until something summoned an abyss worm mass I didn't immediately spot and kill; gave me a scare as it neared where the ancient white dragon & nightblade team was waiting. Then after collecting from the weaker areas, I opened another part I thought I could handle; having forgotten about It. The most notable thing It did was remind me it had Amnesia then blink away; leaving artifacts and excellents bringing me up another few levels-- apparently the crown of telepathy gives two more levels than the cap of Sam; I value speed a lot more highly than the game apparently (also Detect everything anyway).

It's refreshing to play a character with both hitdudes and hitpoints and super-fast-leveling; the Pattern weapon I was using killed basically everything, even Jurt, and Sting is even better-- nothing great by most player's standards, but I always find getting huge damage hard for some reason. (Playing a non-randarts-only game this time, mostly because I was sick of completely losing the effect of the Stone of Lore.)

Bought a potion of dexterity and then went to the chameleon cave because why not and

Too amusing not to respond to.
Sadly, chameleons consider themselves too interesting for Interesting Rooms; the option doesn't seem to have any effect there! This did, however, give me the opportunity to see what normal vault generation is like without having to play an unInteresting game. A rod of detection, a strength potion, and a couple randarts (spear 'Delta' and fur cloak of the Arcane [which I don't use, but caused an Augmentation from patron]) later, I've gotten about 50 wanted corpses and 20 wanted skeletons-- I turn them in, and the bounty day ends.
I scum Camelot 1 for the GHB, get the t-shirt, but not before fighting the Dwar, the Dog Lord of Waw, who brought me down to 1/3rd hitpoints once, then gave me one of the Rings of the Nazgul. I put it on expecting a few levels, but that was only because I'd forgotten that rings/lightsources don't effect Android Cst.
Dived the orc caves, and as I was about to go down to level 24, I noticed a magenta asterisk in a glass vault; a stone {unidentified}. I checked for dangerous things, and although there were, they weren't the kind that could get to me in the few turns it took to reach where the stone was, and...

giving me 3 new levels, one of which somehow made me very fat (3 speed -> 1 speed, 2 more con), another gave a junk item, and the last allowed me to summon mold.
So of course I decided to try out my new chaos resistance in the arena to kill Barney, but kept going until the Dark Elven Sorceror, which I thought was that level 20-30 thing but was instead a level 41 thing which brought me down to about as many hitpoints before I luckily got the last hit (while technically blind). It's only the arena, but it gives me an idea of how fragile I still am relative to my level/hitpoints.
I need speed, but I'm not sure where to get it.

A couple arts were there, as well as Restore Mana, but this character cares about none of them.
Did Barrow Downs, gaining Healing potions, another junk art, and the randart cloak Aether Flash, which was apparently Merry? I thought arts were only converted to randarts in a randarts-only game.
Randomly bought a potion of intelligence (no spells worth an inventory slot yet though), then went off to visit (aka finish) the Labyrinth, and check the Lonely Mountain/the Volcano.
Along the way to Volcano, I ran into the vault I still need to work on, and I notice the tags for placing objects under the summoners didn't seem to do anything; there weren't any light sources at all in the vault. Oh, and wilderness orcs gave the shortbow 'Gospel', while the paladin vault gave 5 scrolls of mundanity, in case I ever want to try out permacursed stuff.
Began the Cloning Pits, bringing a wand of clone monster to test if these uniques were clonable that way too (they weren't; no Jurt armies for me), and shortly into it (during the trolls) I found the cloak of Aman, which apparently grants +3 speed and one level. Then, halfway through the level (after a filling up on arts), I found some elvenkind boots granting another +3; enough to more reasonably be doing this quest (mostly running on 800hp and healing before). Then for more speed, I found the rod! I think my speed gap has been filled.
Other than Aman, the only artifact I used from the bunch was Benten, and the only other item was the crossbow of hellfire (combining to give one more level).
Then I bought blkmkt constitution/intelligence/healing potions, and finally felt like posting.

Did the Angband 24 quest, which was kinda scary because Itangast was right there behind only glass. Couldn't tell which loot was from the quest monster, since an ancient multi-hued dragon walked up first, but I got another poison needle and a dexterity potion. Then I did the nearby patternvault for more arts and my third book; not that I can use it, for some reason.
Next dip (L27 Lonely) found a +6 ring of speed; +13 total right now.
Did the Graveyard/Zul/Mine circuit; taking out both Meneldor and Gwaihir because they bothered me around the Zul mountains. A fight with a random L50 ice giant worried me, but it never took more than 100hp.
More Lonely. More arts. More lesser uniques.
I remembered my spell levels and looked up (again? Again.) which key is for learning spells if not [b]rowse; [G]ained ![Master] disintegration, which should make reaching vaults faster (its damage is comparable to the Bazooka I can already use; just more radius).
Anduril; it gives me a level, and more damage, but my hp goes down (Sting gives con).
Werewindle; also grants a level, and offers enough resists/speed that I can switch out my shield for it. Dual wielding mode; so I went on a practice mission to the Arena, where I brought a perfectly mundane longsword and smallsword and found things like stone dragons and warriors of the Dawn that couldn't hurt me much but could take a lot of hits (and provided plenty of misses, which raise skill just as well). There were a few close calls in there, but most things stayed asleep so long as I only spent a turn or two near them. Managed to get both hands above 40% skill.
Then, on my very next trip to the Lonely Mountain, I found a pair of genji cesti; they give me a level, which offsets the 4 con I lose from taking off the gauntlets of Corwin.
It took a long time, but I finally have comfortable levels of damage; 500 normal damage/round and decent accuracy against L50 things. Also, hit 16 speed with Werewindle!
I can still get breathed on to die, though.
Took one more Lonely trip, and the genji cesti have been immediately replaced by the cesti of Fingolfin, which grant similar damage/accuracy but also acid resist and 2 levels.

Then I went into the Haunted House for the first time.
It wasn't scary; I could one-shot most things in there, things spent a lot of time bouncing bolts at themselves, and the spectral tyrannosaurus didn't breathe at me. Only issue was the druj kept teleporting me away the instant I got into LOS. Smart, but eventually it didn't get a turn before me.
Continued visiting Lonely Mountain, collecting significant amounts of end-game healing (*healing*, life), stat potions (maxed two things), as well as a staff of holiness (healing and LOS attack and protection at once) and a wand of Dragon Fire. Biggest unique slain was Ashram the Ebony Knight, followed up by the Multi-hued Centipede; there have been plenty of other uniques, but I've gotten good at avoiding everything big and nasty (and thus notable).
First time Killing Fields as well.
Began sedately with bouncing Warriors of the Dawn around and setting off various mines, and ended serenely with all the WotD dead and the Maulotaur killed 3 turns after it woke up. There isn't a lot of creature variety, so I think this counts as one of the easier lvl50 quests. Since this didn't feel like a real quest, and since I didn't get any loot....
To the Old Castle.
To pick up the cloak of Jack of Shadows from the second Vampire Lord. (Gaining two levels.)
To clear the left half of the level with no greater problem than figuring out what loot to take.
To reach the right half wondering what the heck I'm going to do about 2 greater titans (and why there are a couple super-weak monsters in back).
To realize that good melee damage, corners, and plenty of healing makes originally insurmountable obstacles routine.
To be forced to search the level multiple times for a "shambling mound" that was stuck in a corner.
Tolerably good loot decisions; about 150k worth of spellbooks, 85k worth of armour, staff of power, 3rd scroll of acquirement and 2nd of Forest Creation, 3 *healing* potions (other other lesser heals), the Harness of Hell, the Pike 'Til-i-arc, and Jack's cloak of course. Also, quest reward not customized; just Crisdurian (which gave another level, but I prefer my resisty weapons).
Took too long to post this update.
P.S. I don't remember where I got the staff of healing.

The rapier 'Quickthorn' get. May actually use it if I can fill the resist holes left. (Also cammithrim or something.)
Some Icky Cave vaulting, some Lonely Mountain vaulting...and this:
a Ring of Speed (+12)
Total base: +19
Additional vaulting seems boring, so time for another quest; the Spawning Pits.
I remember hearing something about quylthulgs in this one, so I brought my two staves of power and my wand of dragon fire; and indeed, the entry detect revealed lots and lots of quylthulgs. Also, Malekith was 4 squares away at start. I guess he counts as a spawner?
Anyway, I brought him down, tried going for the first quylthulg but it was awake and teleported, and then Iketa (lvl70 unique I've never fought) starts making his way towards me from the other side of the level. On the way, however, he kills several quylthulgs, because apparently he doesn't like them either.
Then he drains all my staves because apparently I'm at that 'depth' now that staves become half-worthless.
Then when I kill him apparently Biketal of Fire (lvl73) gets auto-summoned; perhaps as an effect unique to Iketa? Hopefully. I teleport, landing me among a mere 4 quylthulgs and about 40 trolls (included the unique stone one).
I spend my precious turns before serious summoning happens to recharge (using 3rd Chaos book) my wand of Dragon Fire, and then use it; not nearly as much damage as I hoped, but one quylthulg down and one scared away. Then I recharge my staves of power and use one of those; this finishes off the summoners near me, giving me a moment to rest and pick up some supplies from the hoard...before Biketal comes and finds me again, that is.
He breathes on me for more than half my hitpoints, and I walk around a corner and wait for him to get closer, then teleport when he's about to get back into range; kindly, I end up on the other side of the map.
Recharge the staves of power, destroy most things in LOS immediately, then the rotting quylthulgs blink near my melee and die. I try to recharge my staff of healing, but the spell destroys it; its long-term loss is small compared to how much I'll need healing (didn't bring enough healing potions). I'll have to survive on loot now; luckily there's a lot of it.
Biketal comes and finds me again; I guess he has a long detection radius, because it's apparently bigger than what my rods give me.
I keep bouncing away from him with teleports, and kill the quylthulgs I get near, and the the hordes of monsters they summon when I have time. Mostly using the android abilities for shootiness, but I picked up a wand of dragon breath to go with my wand of dragon fire and staves of power.
I find a wand of teleport other (another thing I didn't bring with me, although I'm not sure if it'll work on Biketal) and a couple of ball rods to allow my sp to regenerate more easily.
I begin to think I might build up enough resources to take on Biketal.
Then Ariel comes to join the fun; she can't do a lot of damage, but she finds me faster, preventing me from resting as much.
Bounced away, got a potion of restore mana, then bounced back to get into a fight with a summoned great bile wyrm, followed by a great storm wyrm. Because I was in melee they didn't seem to want to breathe, but Biketal came and did it for them, taking a star off each and two off Ariel. The storm wyrm dropped a staff of healing, but I didn't get to pick it up; too many rebreathers in one place!
Next stop was a lone rotting quylthulg, getting off a ghoulking and a zephyr lord; something around there dropped a staff of holiness, so now I have two, and they can sub for staves of power much of time.
Biketal came while I was recharging things, and this time I used the wand of teleport other-- it works! And it apparently sent him distantly enough that he forgot about me; I was able to rest to full finally.
Next I led Biketal around the housing for the master quylthulg so I could pick up the staff of healing; I had to teleport him away again anyway to do so, and finally take out Ariel, but now I have semi-renewable healing again. Although, instead of spending time recharging it or resting, I made an assault on the master quylthulg. It died, but mostly because two great storm wyrms it summoned breathed towards it, and with those, the great bile wyrm, and Quaker, I bounced away again instead of trying to finish them.
They and Biketal then made a beeline towards me while I grabbed more supplies. Oh, and at some point I picked up the Star of Elendil, but it's only +1 speed.
What followed was killing everything except Biketal by teleporting away the first few things to come into LOS, killing one alone, then repeating. Next bounce, Bikki manages to kill another quylthulg; guess he doesn't like them either.
Being as I've collected a half-decent amount of healing, I decide to buckle down and try to take him down. I use a resistance potion I picked up, and my staff of holyness (which apparently makes him miss more?), then a few turns into melee he dispels all that, but luckily that staff allows me to bring back a buff, heal, and hurt him at the same time. Didn't notice for a few turns he dispelled my speed too (somehow I put it in a different mental box), and when I returned it he decided to shoot himself with my amulet of reflection. About half his stars down at this point, and the rest goes relatively sedately; he breathes on me for more than half my hitpoints several times, but what hard thing doesn't? Although, I did end up with only one healing left at the end, and he only refunded one.
The rest was basic cleanup; killing the last two quylthulgs, and collecting the best loot out of all the loot-- I was lucky in a way that I didn't have to drop anything important for artifacts. There were both fixed-arts and rand-arts, but the ones I consider important are the Robe of Eternity (which gained me 2 levels [and does it actually need sInv to find?]) and the cesti 'Rengoku-Kaen' (which gave one more), and of course the star of Elendil. This actually open up a couple resistance holes, but now all my stats are sustained; which means I can--
I think I'm going to go do the Rise* quest next.
After posting this monstrosity of an update. I think I tend to record more when I'm worried about a situation. Terrible.

I ditzed around in the Lonely Mountain a bit, then went and did Doom Quest 2 as well; it went about as smoothly as Rise & Fall, where I teleported to one corner to reduce crossfire possibilities then took down the iron liches one at a time-- it did take a few charges from my healing/holiness staves, but I prepared for far worse.
(Time gap here; I was tired enough before this to spend some time dancing around in towns doing nothing important, then slept. I wonder which virtues correspond to which alignment, though, because apparently "compassion" is lawful instead of good.)
The 3rd chaos book didn't seem to have anything else I wanted, and these spell levels are burning, so it's time to get the 4th book; by doing the Chaos Node quest. One uneventful trip to Zul later...
I detect as I enter the level, and there are far too many great Hell wyrms in too small a space. However, they all do me the courtesy of waking up one at a time, and leaving plenty of time between each awakening for the awake one to come out and get killed; no other creature was really significant compared to that (another point for the cloak of Jack of Shadows!). Lost my staff of healing here anyway (natch), and the Stone of Chaos didn't really make up for it since "greatly enhances fire magic" apparently means "slightly increase success rate and decrease mana cost" instead of any damage bonuses that would make the magic more worth the turns/item-slot. Also, hell hounds of Julian are about 30 levels above the wyrms, but do less damage and are much flimsier.
The 4th chaos book didn't really have anything I wanted either. :/ I think the second book might actually be more useful, if I ever feel like using Destruction on things.
Next trip to the lonely mountain involved messing around with a coiling walled-filled hallway vault where a great wyrm of chaos teleported out (or something) and followed me in while I was working on it. Then when I left I met That @$^%& Black Bat, which distracted me not for any of the things it's supposed to be annoying for but instead because it provided a steady but manageable stream of dragons.
Then Gerard snuck up on me with a "commands you to return" and got a round of earthquake in before I left; down to 1/5 hitpoints for that.
Loot made up for it; the cap of Indra, which allows me to sacrifice a bit of base and nexus resist for elec immunity and blindness resist. Not sure if good trade, but certainly less annoying one; was getting blinded way too often.
Angband 38 Quest; Eol the Dark Elf Smith. None of the nearby vaults were the open kind, the hallways were short and few, and although he got several turns, he died without landing a hit. Next.
Angband 44; only Shuten-Douji, but I was sandwiched between two diggable vaults, and there were grinding noises when he was at about half hitpoints, and when I finished him off and picked up loot a fire vampire, a greater balrog, a death beast, and Charon all showed up (in that order, additional LOS courtesy of death beast disintegration breath). Notable loot; metal shod boots of Thror, which give speed like my elven boots but trade stealth and levitation for con, str, more confusion resist, and level 49.
Next...I had become too tired to write down anything or successfully make memories; I do not know what more close calls I had or where I went, but I diff'ed the dump with my last dump, and these are the things which pop out at me:
Wearing a (+0,+20) ring of combat instead of a (+0,+7) (+2 DxCn) one.
Wielding the Rapier 'Silver Chariot' instead of Sting; I have high skill with it, and there are 2 mundane rapiers at home.
Scylla, Kavlax, and Ulfang mysteriously dead.
Carrying my rods of teleport other now.
Some more healing, *healing*, life, a lot less curing and cure critical.
Wand of Dragon's Frost.
More randarts than I want to bother counting. (Does Cupid's arrow do anything?)
6 poison needles total.
Rod of Mana Bolts.
Then right before posting I spent about 1mil on random rods, getting a curing, 2 life draining, and a teleport other. (Curing of course not yet worth the inventory slot, but it will be once I get more!)
I notice I need nether and nexus resist.

Once I find him again, he does about 200hp of damage but dies in 4 rounds. Also, I did this while forgetting that I'm already at stat max.
...
I played Poschengband.
My home inventory is ~2/3rds full of arts and randarts. ~1/4 full of end-game supplies.
I'm wearing the boots of Shiva's Avatar, using the bo staff 'Ruyi Jingu Bang' (w/Silver Chariot), and have ~900 normal damage a round.
Traded lightning immunity {Indra} for the crown of Amber.
The King in Yellow, Sleipnir, Itangast, Ghatanothoa, Scatha (the wyrm), Judge Fire, and Rolento are all gone.
I have sufficient rods that I need not worry about normal delving supplies, and sufficient money I need to worry about most loot.
(In the dump for this post I was trying to maximize Cst; the items I usually use are in inventory [as well as what I can't yet sell].)
P.S: there were a few times where if I had hit my 1.5% teleport fail, I would have died, but is this news?
On 24.1.2015 05:53 Nivim wrote: FR: Stuff like speed/searching/stealth in the C information columns can show green/red numbers like in the stat columns, instead of just plus/minus signs.
Went to the DL50 Quest-- Druaga. Accomplishing that in a few turns, I went down a couple floors, thinking of doing the next quest, but when I used detection and monster list, I noticed there were at least 17 uniques (+metal babble) in the nearby vaults (more purple than red). At least a few of those things could blink/teleport, and some of them could do the whole "commands you to return!" thing; so before I start doing the deeper quests, I need to kill some more of the much stronger uniques (or become more durable).
Oh! And I shuffled my kit around some; the dex of Yoichi, the slaying of Padre, and the acid immunity of Tuor were all too good to give up, and their side-effects neatly kept any holes from opening (except telepathy, but I have 11 detection rods now). And since the Padre armour gives reflection, I was able to switch out my amulet for more accuracy. ~960 normal damage a round now, and 30% of that goes through 200AC.
Then, of course, shortly after writing that I found another +12 ring of speed, and although (0,+20) slaying really should be better, I find I like the speed more; more likely to be able to survive those moments where a bunch of things come into LOS (|pull/send you into LOS) and do huge damage in the same round.
Made good headway on uniques-- 10 different ones in the top 20: Yibb-Tstll, Fafner, Garm, The Phoenix,( Druaga,) Glaaki, Ungoliant, Atlach-Nacha, Yig, and Azriel.
That last I didn't really do though; Azriel spent a lot of time in the middle of a vault fighting everything else there, and by the time I reached him he was dueling with a lone spectral wyrm at 1 star of hitpoints (probably around 1 hp too). (17 uniques total, apparently, but I don't remember what the other 7 were! Sorry, but they died too quick and I wasn't writing at the time.)
Finally, I've reached that point in the game again where I've run out of obvious things to get rid of to make more space for (rand)artifacts. The tally says I've found 122 fixed arts this game, and so far as I can tell, I'm only missing one (sling of buckland).
On 24.1.2015 09:59 clouded wrote: Not sure what your fixed art comment is about, there are approximately a million. Character is looking decent, good damage and AC. You should really prioritise Nether resistance though, breaths go for 700 damage (if I remember) and there are a lot of nether breathing uniques. Light and Nexus are the only ones I feel safe going without.

The list on ~1 versus the list in ~8 in other words.
Oddly, I hadn't been tempted by nether resist, since even against the Spectral Wyrm its lack didn't bother me...I think I've been just hoping that another (rand)art pops up that I can replace something with without losing much, but yeah, vain (thoughtless) hope and all that.

Went to the dragon's lair; there were huge piles of loot, and then they were destroyed. Repeatedly. Not so good for supplies.
Then I searched my home for nether resist again, and realized I was being foolish; I had a bow that could do it all along!
Swapped Faramir's amulet for the Sacred Pendant as well, just to test out what warning is like.
Anyway, too many things are boring, so it's time to do a quest; the Royal Crypt. During this quest, I had vaguely remembered something about investigating, and assumed I needed to kill everything (vidyagame quests in a nutshell). However, after destroying the last druj, I didn't get a quest complete message, yet it was marked as complete, so apparently there was something else I did along the way which finished it.
This is of course, after using a staff of summoning a couple times hoping for supplies, and taking out Rhan-Tegoth because he came instead (ending the staff). Moreover, looking at the message log, quest completion had nothing to do with the drujs at all other than the stairs, but doing both druj rooms cost me the most healing potions by use and destruction (at least, until I realized again in the last one I should use Confusing Lights). Edit: debo suggested there were only a few things I needed to kill, and although it could have been the black reavers, it was probably the archliches, since those were set-up to be hard to reach, even though I killed them first because "commands you to return!".
I am unsure what the Palantir of Westerness' activation is supposed to do; it says "list uniques" but isn't that what already happens in ~3? Edit: clouded explained; it's actually detect uniques, for on the current level or in the current area.
Next trip to the dragon caves I learned what "warning" does; it prompts you when you're about to move into LOS of something dangerous. It's only triggered on Nidhogg so far, but that might be because of my decent hitpoints. (A new, better ring of Nazgul I also won't use.)
This is the dungeon: Mount Olympus. Reputed to be a good place for an artifact creation scroll, and at the end of a very long levitation. It seemed 'just as good' a place to read as any other, but I will hold off on renaming such scrolls-- and it was certainly exciting there! I had visited without the scroll, then recalled back with it, and thus had no stairs. So I spent a while running/teleporting from a lot of different scary things (cyberdemons, star spawn of cthulhu, fenghuang) and uniques (Wahaha-man, Saruman); parting shot went to Hephestus, but he's amazingly wimpy for his stature...not even as much damage as a tonberry!
5 departed uniques displayed on the list; Beld, Baphomet, Daoloth, Narse, and of course Rhan-Tegoth-- but 12 total.
Deciding how to store or sell loot is taxing on my patience and ability to not ragequit. Some players ragequit to statswap or hounds; I get the same feeling from running out of inventory.

On 2.2.2015 18:24 Nivim wrote: Cleaning time! Museumed all the hobbit items and the elemental daggers, as well as something special (total smith costs: 1.1mil). Refreshing. There will be more later.
I think I want to go metal babble hunting, after a few more supplies (not Dragon Lair; Castle).
One of the first significant 'supplies' I found was a potion of polymorph; after I noticed it was a mutation thing and not a race thing, quaffed it, and it brought me down from two bad mutations to one; replacing coward with fearless.
This was after killing Dworkin Barimen, who apparently has that constantly changing glyph now; I didn't think he did when I last died to him.
He also counts as an amberite, and I consider myself lucky I only got a few summons and a cursed weapon from his death curse. Also lucky that the out-of-LOS-in-LOF spectral tyrannasaurus didn't breath at me at the same time.
Next trip did not bring supplies but instead Saruman of Many Colours who didn't put up much of a fight. Did about 100hp damage total with fireballs, teleported me away once, then tried fleeing and finished dieing. The wanted list gave weapon branding; something I've heard Psions can get infinite quantities of.
Maybe chameleon cave for a bit?
No, that's not it either.
Back to cheering up the Lonely Mountain?
Only a little; I was sure there was somewhere I could take a bunch of summoning staves and expect to come out with a few healing potions each trip.
Ok, time to take Indra and my stack of cloning wands and find a Great Storm Wyrm.
Only 2 healing and 1 *healing* from ~20 wyrms, and just as many artifacts; a bad ratio. So I finally checked the changelog again; potions were indeed nerfed, and it's amazing how big the effect of 50->40 is.
Kept raiding the Dragon's Lair anyway, mostly hovering at the same amount of various healing, although with a steady drop in curing. Sold a few wimpy randarts for space. Found Y'golonac in one of those checkervaults, and decided to actually fight him despite its level/hugehp. Apparently it does sad damage in melee, and maybe has a preference for melee when it could summon instead-- however, the fight made me really want a way to keep monsters from teleporting. The level was too big.
The robe of Kamikaze Warrior. It actually has good resists, although no reflection of course. This time I reforged randarts onto blades of chaos instead of selling them; the result was almost liked I'd used [d]issapoint.
Trivia: Scrolls of acquirement can sometimes give nothing. "Acquire fresh air", "acquire 'thought that counts'".
For this post's pose, I wore Kamikaze Warrior, Stone of War, and my randart slaying amulet, berserked, and used enlarge weapon. Total avg.nor.dmg.: 1263.
...
Maybe the difference for all this effort would be more noticeable if my class wasn't "hybrid"?
I mean, with all that ac loss, I'm going to be taking a lot more hits in melee, with all those terrible brands like drain charges. I might keep the slaying amulet, though.
On 2.2.2015 18:30 debo wrote: Umm that is pretty crazy melee for a chaos warrior? They're not really the best fighters. You seem to not be using your magic much :)
The dual-wielding seems to be trashing your to-hit, also.

On 3.2.2015 01:22 Nivim wrote: I see-- this class sacrifices a lot of melee potential for its magic; my confusion stems from how Chaos is mostly high-fail ranged attacks with some utility thrown in, and the android attacks are better and don't cause status effects when I cast them from hp, while my utility is already mostly covered by rods/scrolls with both lower fail and not requiring mp/hp. To top it off, my mutations have nothing to do with my realm. (Confusing lights might have been worth a hundred or two end-game damage, and Arcane Binding did sorta save my life/quest in the Spawning Pits.)
Perhaps a race/roll higher in int could have been played more as a mage? I don't remember getting more than 230mp though, even when I equipped for it, and I'm not sure how I could boost my spells high enough to do decent damage (I recall that's hard even on a mage).
-- Oh right, and I'm planning to use Word of Destruction eventually to get rid of summons (or something).
On wielding; I've almost got enough resists covered to switch to genji gloves. (Also, I'm apparently 4 above max str.)
On Te: I have a crossbow that does that! But sadly, not nether resistance.
On 9.2.2015 00:18 Nivim wrote: You know Ultimate Magi? They breath disintigration, and it can be really suprising since they know to do it through walls.
Nyogtha was another one of those things that seemed like it would be really bad but then wasted its time using mostly acid melee which I'm immune to.
Thuringwethil didn't have a message for me again.
(Dragon's Lair gave scroll of *acquirement*, so I took yet another risky trip to Mount Olympus. Predictably, I got junk, but not so was that the upstairs were only about 20 steps away.)
I'm deep enough to meet Morgoth randomly now; he's really good at getting out of vaults and heading straight towards you, then ruining any good terrain you were using.
Brand came to visit me similarly on an open level (very little cover studded with vaults), but instead of threatening two-turn death his logrus breath hit my 72% chaos resist, and when I accidentally killed him without antimagic no curse triggered.
Cthugha was like Nyogtha; despite its success blinding me, it didn't make any more hp headway than Brand did. (Long sword of the Dawn get, and it's hilarious because it summons a bunch of those Warriors on activate. Good distraction?)
Also, apparently there's an activation that reveals Shadowers! On "The Inro of Mito Koumon". Sounds like something I might carry around at some point, since knowing what I'll be fighting is survival in interesting-land— although so far Shadowers haven't been that common.
The Robe of Incanus looks like it would be great on a real mage character.
I should go find some dungeon guardians; maybe they can tell me how they're guarding when adventurers can trapeze about almost all the floors of their dungeon without ever meeting them.
On 14.2.2015 14:23 Nivim wrote: Finally went and flagged the Mountain, killing both Petshop and Dio Brando. Time stop is scary; I really aught to remove Moronic so I can use Confusing Lights reliably again.
Shelob next; slain easily after checking a few different instances for one where she wasn't at the very end of a greater vault. Did a shorter vault anyway, and ran into a bug. 10+1 poisoned needles.
Must've killed some lesser (to me) unique, because fame went up by 5 instead of 3 or 4.
Chameleon caves next. I detected it on Quaker, did some damage on Shouten-douji, left Smaug, Rinaldo found me and I left him too, met Scatha (who got a breath in), shot at Stormbringer, and killed Zhar (the Chameleon Lord). Saving the polymorph potion (which is a mutation; not a race change) for when I have enough to try replacing the mutation set I have now.
Utgard-Loke was kinda difficult to reach because stuff kept earthquaking out of LOS and Utgard was only one of many giant breathers in the vault I could find him in. Discovered that quest/guardian artifacts get randarts made based on them when you've already found the artifact in question (reason for one I was confused about earlier).
Suddenly went collecting stuff for reforging, since I seem to be getting randarts so steadily. Method 1: Sheer summoning staves. Method 2: Find an ancient dragon and start cloning it in a perpetual battle with all 72 of my charges. Method 3: Use summoning staves instead of hunting, then clone the best thing.
In the middle of this, Julian came to visit, and he was about as hard to kill as the Great Venom Wyrm right beside him. Granted two artifacts at once; stone of death and katana of Musashi.
Found an interesting Pendant which gives a (900 turn recharge) activation for 'Star Ball'; which apparently shoots multiple times for explosions, but when I tested it I had the targetter set somewhere else, so I didn't get to see if it does much damage-- it sure has the graphic for it though!
Gothmog came and pulled the same trick Morgoth did; making it really hard to do things because he leaves his vault and finds me very quickly and reliably. It's almost like it's just not reasonable for me to be wandering around DL70-72 when the vault uniques end up being end-game material. Gotta go deeper to completely erase any noticeable difference between the OoD creatures and normal generation.
New 'tech': find a large greater vault with very few open spaces near it, then dig out an area for yourself near the vault. Various creatures fighting inside the vault will get down to low hitpoints and teleport themselves or each other right into the space you made.
In other news, I killed Nidhogg with basically no effort.
Fiona would just not quit going after me on various dungeons trips, so she finally met her end.
Went down and crunched Layzark, who apparently doesn't have quest loot. Just there to be defeated heroically? (Also bye Bast.)
Bothered Thorondor, but did not kill him for some reason.
Went after the slightly higher level great hell wyrm Shooting Star, and it's nice that lava doesn't auto-destroy all loot. This granted another staff of mana storms, which I haven't really used.
I dived down to the Vecna next, and darnit Lems, I can't fight anything if you keep earthquaking everything! On top of that, earthquaking a vault apparently makes it tele-into-able, so shortly after that various archliches and such started summoning me, and it's really dangerous in Vecna's vault. I missed my power staves, and when I couldn't figure out what to do with the vault I used a summoning staff I picked up hoping for supplies, and got Hoarmurath, followed by Hastur. Not sure why I keep doing that in dangerous places, but luckily neither of them were as scary as they sounded-- mostly because they were already in melee where casting is less likely. Ran low on supplies/space at this point, so after watching Lems smash things a bit I retreated.
Take two; with staves of healing, power, and holiness. So of course, instead of the mess of undead from last time, it's just Vecna all alone in a river, and she drains my staves and manastorms once. The ProtEvil from the holiness staff helped, though. Got a mage-y crown (of the Emperor Lich) I might use, since it's like a magi crown but gives plenty of resists/speed.
Found the Jewel of Judgement on L70 of the Dragon's Lair! Hopefully this can replace the enlightenment potions I was carrying around, and if I can find a way to make it recharge faster maybe it can replace my rods too.
Out of curiosity, I equipped for casty-ness in this dump, and it turns out I can get 483mp and good fail rates for all my biggest spells, but at the cost of having horrible resists (and of course losing a lot of melee). Also apparently that equipment does great things to my device skill; 1% fail healing rod.
My notes are now officially longer than the dump.
Time for celebration or time for atonement?

On 22.2.2015 23:52 Nivim wrote: Went back to the Dragon's Lair and Tiamat, who proceeded to be right beside the staircase and blast me. Did a vault and Ahtu instead-- did you know that when a friendly creature is cornered by an enemy the virtue system blames you?
Found the harp of Daeron, which seems really nice because of the healing and con (and reflection), but I still have that nether resist problem. Which is to say, an AC problem, because I'm now using the robe of the Kamikaze Warrior for nether resist.
Tested my lower AC against Nappa and a few other things in the arena and it looks fine so far; amazing how little difference there is between 180 and 130.
Going after Tiamat again, but just took Moire and Glaurung down before running out of space for goodies.
Next shot resulted in a bad fight with (and feeling from) the Norsa, followed by a number of different fights leading wyrms away from Tiamat, and finally with Caine coming to join the party; the bloodcurse triggered, but luckily the only significant thing it did was curse my robe. I also got bored waiting for wyrms to walk up, so I summoned the Demogorgon, but this mostly just meant a few blades of chaos from the entourage.
Third shot found Gothmog again, but this time I dodged into a perma-wall vault, and instead of following me he waited around a corner, giving me time to think "I should at least use probing on him instead of just leaving the level". I took care of some stuff in the vault that could suprise me at a bad time (Gothmog not moving a step), then charged out, probed, and wondered if I could take him.
Berserk, Enlarge Weapon, Confusing Lights (feared him for a couple turns so I could close range), +52 speed, and a bit of healing did the trick. I was worried about his breath, and his Cyberdemons summon spell, but all he did the whole fight was try and hit me (some scary crits though!). [I think I actually lost berserk partway through the fight; the harp of Daeron's healing apparently removes it.]
Fourth shot the Norsa was right beside Tiamat in the depths of a vault, and digging in, it came out first too (lots of non-unique stuff was teleported out for some reason during this). The fight was long, and I technically lost a few thousand hp, but I remembered to bring 4 healing staves this time, and Tiamat decided to just sit around with her wyrms instead of coming and complicating things (she was awake the whole time). And that's as far as I got, because none of the team of dragons moved at all; they're in a position where they can all breathe on me at once when I walk around the corner, and the AI changes apparently mean they know it.
Fifth shot gets Mycen, Bramd, and Fundin as the uniques in the same vault as Tiamat, and they're friendly for me. Sadly, all but Fundin get teleported away by the gravity breath of a sky drake. All of them teleport level themselves when they get into combat with Tiamat; apparently there's code to keep friendly uniques from helping you with dungeon guardians.
[Using berserk is actually a lost cause because I lose it the moment I need to use any healing, which is first or second turn with Tiamat.]
Anyway, two or three neardeaths later to heck with this.
Angband 56 quest-- Habu the Champion of Chaos. Apropos. He used manastorm, which I certainly can't do reliably, so I replied with Confusing Lights stunning. Then I closed into melee, where I did about 22x the damage he seemed capable of. Also, darnit Lems, quit embedding everything in rock!
A few more lesser uniques down; Rinaldo surprised me eventually when the "ancient foul curse" (from his death) on my harp amnesia-ed and summoned in town-- for a moment I thought the message meant I had appeared somewhere else that looked like where I was, Crawl Abyss style. (FR: temporary abyssing twilight-zone scenarios from curses.)
Eric's Stronghold is technically at a lower difficulty than the dungeon floors I've habituated to, so it's time to send Corwin's regards.
Result: Disappointing. The hardest thing was him teleporting away when he successfully hit me, and even then the area was small enough he just came back to get stabbed again. Got a scroll of vengeance and a death scythe (not that I'll use it), and all from the last creature in the place (a sorcerer).
Testing Needles: Metal Babble edition.
I snagged a couple uniques on the way down the arena, needing to take multiple trips because loot and supplies. After reaching DL:80 I had a couple false starts (where it must have been on the other side of the level), but then on the third try it came to visit me with immense speed-- it's rare to find something faster than me, and this thing is +80! It also is really good at maintaining range, so I got blasted a few times before (testing a staff of power and) teleporting away in the hopes of finding better terrain. When it tried to follow me, I discovered that it can't open doors; if only I had dozen of door creation items, then I'd be fine. Instead, it kept teleporting away, and I recalled to get my *Tele item so I could follow it (breaking news; it only works on teleports, not those constant blinks). Also, scroll of vengeance to see if that helps (update; it doesn't).
Not only that, but the insta-kill effect of Poison Needles isn't what lets you kill the Babble; it's the fact that Needle hit-chance doesn't seem to care about ac or accuracy. Which means with my Kamikaze robe I get 1d2 for each of my two needles, which means I stilled needed to get lucky and successfully close in melee several times. Doors helped a lot, as did my stack of healing staves.
Going to use the scroll of artifact creation on a blade of chaos. (Wasn't as good as the other one I made.)
Started diving various dungeons to see if they had bosses or not (since I didn't remember), then went to castle because it had a depth that seemed nice for collecting money.
I found Sauron.
He summoned a bunch of stuff as I slowly brought down his hp, but Confusing Lights saves the day again; everything but Sauron, Judge Fear, and a Spectral Wyrm was suspended, and those three were stunned. I expected more from the "DL:98" semi-boss creature, but I guess stunning is good!
Granted the ring of Cower, which is apparently like a ring of power but with all the positive things negative instead.
Flagged R'lyeh.
Found the Railgun; it apparently provides immunity to fire.
I was busy collecting money for more reforges, and getting really bored (and maybe malnourished?), when a tonberry walked around a corner and ended the game.
R.I.P. Dead to the monster version of my last char +44 levels.
I feel an intense lack of emotional reaction here; I guess I'll go have a meal.
