A note on my start, I pumped everything into song and decided to wait and see if I got any stealth junk before I had enough xp for mastery. So those melee points you see weren't invested until later.

I've been feeling pretty survivable with song of mastery around these depths. I put enough into melee to get charge, so I can run up and beat people down while they sit there doing nothing. I really only do it for the first few kills of a species and the xp.

The issue is this helm. Listen is AMAZING, but I'm not sure I can take on anything stronger with my current set. How bad is the encountering worse creatures thing?

I also have no idea what the shield could be, and I'm hesitant investing further into perception for loremaster with my song so low.

About your current set: Especially with song being your main defence you should try to get rid of opponents as fast as possible before you stand breathless and thus defenceless.

Lore master is by far not the only way to identify items, it needs a bit of experimenting and metalore otherwise, but with a char with only investment in song so far, I would hardly go for Lore master next. (Let me guess: Your shield is a red ) on the floor?)

The typical shield enchantments are wrath and resists and you can test both fairly easy by 1) looking whether you aggravate opponents 2) taking the required elemental damage while wielding it.

I went 5 melee and charge because it was a cost effective way to reliably kill things quickly while mastering them. The extra dice sides help a boatload killing things.

Usually I just tap Elbereth to herd people into the stairs instead of fighting. Mastery rounds out the defensive benefits to include spiders and wolves, and allows me to kill the first couple mobs of a type I see with charging.

The shield is a red ), yes. Found on the floor.

I'd feel a lot more comfortable use-iding my consumables if I had a list of possibilities somewhere. I can't guess the effects without them having one.

You should definitely keep it, but just not wielding the shield now is almost as good as charging. (+1 to hit and 2 more damage sides w/ bastard sword.) Also I would seriously consider lighter armour (further increasing your melee) to hit better - trust your voice. (Sil isn't a heavier armour + heavier weapon = automatic profit game.)

Learning about possibilities: Easiest way would be to look in the object memory of one of your other chars that took lore master. (Or a new char from such a file.)

Loremaster ended up being worth it. I saved a potion of dex and a potion of grace by taking it and it earned back its cost already in xp. The additional points in perception also stack well with listen from the helm.

Most importantly, however, is that I can see the will of any enemy I come across before I see them through walls.

As I understand it, mastery is an opposed check of 1d10 + song against 1d10 + will + 5.
That would mean I'd need 14 song higher than the opposing will in order to lock them in place. If I'm wrong PLEASE tell me.

The grace point is next from song no matter what. After that I'll probably dump some points into melee so I can actually hit things.

The distance to the enemy gets subtracted from your Song value.

Does being adjacent count as +1 to difficulty or +0? I've been running on the assumption that adjacent was +0 with every square after that being +1.

It was a very good run, the best I've had by far. Loads of fun with a lot of tight spots to get the blood flowing. I learned a lot. Attracting dangerous foes is scary stuff. Listen is absolutely amazing. Loremaster's most useful trait is seeing enemy stats. Staff of recharging can recharge staff of recharging.

I should have used my staff of warding to make a safe escape path, and I should have not underestimated the danger of that darting horror. Looking at the vault postmortem, it had nothing I wanted anyways.

I could have killed the cat prince if the horror weren't there, and I could have easily escaped with one extra round of mastery working. I downed the potion of quickness a round too late and it killed me.

Next time I make a mastery build I'll use concentration instead of charge most likely to see if it works better with the grace bonuses. It might also make all the perception stuff too expensive, I won't know till I try.

Adjacent is distance 1.

Fun character, anyway! Glad to see it was pretty successful.

Remember you got Listen for free, if you have to pay for Keen Senses + Listen and want Concentration (which requires Focus) and the stat bonus... Lore Master starts to look seriously expensive.
