Unzipped the precompiled XAngband 1.3.1 Windows binary and ran it on WinXP SP3 without much of a hitch. The only issue is that the precompiled binary has the font set Courier 11. Set the font size to 10, and it wil look 100% normal. I don't knlw if there is a Mac compiled version of this.

Overall, XAngband is easier than PosChengband. Has only ONE dungeon and multiple easy access towns. The only gotchas so far are the quest monsters at clvl 6, 12, 24, etc.
