...but I can also note that in the process of going to Angband to get a broken dagger (real quick!) I defeated Mauhur, and, unlike Azog, did not have to work around creatures double my level to do it!
Then I went on to disintigrate/manastorm the Mother Hydra and also get another randart.
Also, I sold my Mass Genocide and museumed my Phial for space, got a 1/4th of vorpal (I though I couldn't because I didn't get any from the first Sharpness weapon), finished getting Acid brand, and dropped both Prayer and Perception to carry more loot (and I think I'll leave the first gone because I have Stoneskin-- which is better, right?).

...from a rare -4,-12 cursed broken dagger.
Although, I'm beginning to wonder if reforging actually costs fame instead of just using it as a cap/determiner.
Oh, and since I noticed my levitation I went to Zul to discover it does not have a teleport service, and along the way met the Windlord, who was annoying and dealt around 1000-1400 damage total, but I had my 3 slurpy rods, my explody rods for when he ~blinked away, and every time he tried to summon nothing appeared among the trees and mountain crags. Also I forgot I was carrying a chest for half the trip, then I opened it in a mountain clearing, and got another *healing*, acquirement, some good-to-sell (shopkeeper max payout) armours, and some food for the Ely's soul.
I visited the Anti-Magic Cave from Zul, then recalled to Camelot and immediately left to turn in Gwaihir's corpse.
(The "Dungeons" section does not include maxdepth and current recall depth seperately.)

On 26.3.2014 22:45 Nivim wrote: The cursed & negative enchantment part doesn't seem to matter; the super-bad broken dagger wasn't going to stack with the others, so I used it first. Anyway, since the stronger|weaker the base type the worse|better the end enchantment, and since I only care for enchantment I go for the worst thing I can find...and I'm not sure broken daggers are the worst, because they still have "Pow: 4" (where daggers are "Pow: 20" and Ely is currently "Pow: 261717" [go Ely]).
Also, the [w]eapon enchant screen will bring bad enchantments up to par for free, not that it matters. As will it enchant stacks of items for the same cost as one, not that I have quite that many daggers.
On 26.3.2014 23:27 CrabTaco wrote: interesting! I still feel lost with some of the terms, but I really want to learn. When you say:
"Also, I sold my Mass Genocide and museumed my Phial for space,"
I think i got part of this, you sold a scroll of Mass Genocide. Not so clear on the museumed part, do you get cash for dropping items there? I haven't used the museum much, its kind of a mystery to me.
For all the hours I spend playing this game, it feels like I am still missing some pieces of the puzzle.
On 27.3.2014 02:58 HugoTheGreat2011 wrote: To "museum" your stuff means donating your stuff...no charge and get nothing in return. The museum is more like a display showcase than anything else.

...from a broken dagger (Pow: 4) and the "The Set of Leather Gloves of Pippin (+1,+1) [1,+7] (+1) {SpDx;-St}" (Pow: 14971).
By opening the reforge screen again I can see the "Pow" number for the result, which is 8189.
Fame no longer seems to go down with reforging since I looked explicitly this time. I think it's mostly just that the rate of fame increase for killing uniques is scaling instead of flat, so even though I've killed Sir Galahad, the Nibelung King, the Variant Maintainer, and one of those Captains, only 2 fame can be attributed to them. Fame might also go down every few in-game hours or so.
I should probably note that these reforges are actually being forced early because of inventory space concerns; I sold a wand of striking, I no longer carry +AC consumables (?Prayer, !StoneSkin) or more food than I can use in one dungeon trip, and those 28 potions of CLW are for an experiment in "virtue". I've also considered getting rid of some rods, but they are all things I've used and have saved me a lot of time, life, or both. (Somehow, I'm still miffed The Hoard got one of my Escaping rods, though; feels dangerous to not be able to teleport multiple times in a row, but I guess that just means I won't be trying the Anti-Magic caves again [out-of-depth for there is totally absurd, especially with unusual_rooms].) I will soon, however, have to start making choices between artifacts instead of between extra items, because every time I go out to get {excellent} items to sell, I usually end up with one (or two) {special}.
One more note on this subject; dang is it tedious to clear up all the objects in a big vault. This is especially obvious when the fight wasn't very dangerous.
Is it unusual for Galahad to drop the Holy Grail? It seems extremely (and flavorfully) good just because of that "Healing" activation...if I could use it at all, that is.
Finally, there is no dump listing for "randarts", but I have found >7 of those now, and luckily they've mostly been weapons (I could just eat).
On 27.3.2014 20:35 CrabTaco wrote: Where do you find the money for the reforges? I have been saving pretty diligently, always sell off my {excellent} items and i still can barely grub together 100k. I did spend a lot on a few stat potions from the black market and also an ill advised reforge on my cap of Sam, thats probably where i lost it all.
I do have pretty much every {special} item I have found sitting in my home. I plan on maybe selling off the weaker ones to see if I can reforge a nice offhand dagger tonight.
On 28.3.2014 06:33 Nivim wrote: This might have seemed off-topic, but do you know what each of the birth options at the bottom of the dump do? I essentially play every level either in tiny short hallways or the vaults they connect, and for most of the game, especially early game, I've had to do a lot of NOPEing as horrible things come out of those vaults to find me. Never entering any dungeon without plenty of teleport, detect monsters, and magic mapping, has allowed this character to survive. Take a look at the current "Dungeons" overview (with extra detail like this):
Angband : level 11
Camelot : level 2 (deepest lvl5)
!Orc cave : level 23 (first floor lvl10)
Anti-magic cave : level 40 (FFlvl40, deepest 41, which was insane)
Icky cave : level 10 (FF10)
And current time: Day 10, 00:29
For a level 33 character, it doesn't seem I've gone deep at all, does it? That's because there tend to be at least 2 creatures nearly 40 levels above the dungeon level on every single floor-- sometimes even a dozen or more. But you see, I can still sometimes get the nearly 40-levels-above loot by avoiding the stronger guardians-- or getting the ones I can just barely handle by themselves-- then teleporting&recalling with the best stuff when things get rough.
That best stuff including all free spaces full of {excellent} or {special} items (IDed during collection, of course), the former usually selling for 40-70k total...and the latter usually taking at least 200k each...so although I'm working with somewhat bigger numbers I still basically have money problems.
(As another statistic, about 3/4ths the floors I visit have the "special" level feeling, and in about 1/3rds of those I've gone into the room with the indicated item(s) before getting the level feeling.)
Oh, right-- in the case of both Angband and the Orc caves I've done even fewer of the total floors there; I keep using Pattern vaults to level-port. Such as in the O.C. I went right from the second or third floor to the second-to-last floor, and am doing a similar thing with Angband; going from level 6 to level 11 (the quest creature is on 12, right? I didn't miss it or something?).
Also apparently I answer so many questions I can't get any questions answered myself; they're just considered rhetorical or something.
On 28.3.2014 20:56 CrabTaco wrote: Ah I see. Thanks for the explanation. Wish I could help your questions.
On 29.3.2014 00:56 Nivim wrote: v) The Broken Dagger 'Cammithrim' (1d1) (+19,+10) (+3 to searching) {InWiSr;Bs|Ca/UL} for OOF (267k at fame 72, Pow: 18360)
...from a broken dagger and "The Set of Leather Gloves 'Cammithrim' [1,+10] {Li;FaLu(Cn}" (Pow: $+45).
Again doing the above because I ran out of space; I am now carrying my Healing even though I don't use it.
I am also carrying a Rod of Havoc now, which I got around the same time an Elf Lord and I killed a Grand Master Thief, I ate a couple artifacts, and I discovered I have enough damage to take vault bosses 30lvls above me if I'm careful, they're not too fast, don't have great melee, and at least one of my many slays and brands works.
Since my damage is no longer mediocre:

...from a rare "Broken Dagger (-1,+2)" (Pow: 0) and "The Cloak of Merry (+1,+1) [1,+7] (+1) {SpDxSlSr;-St;Cf}" (Pow: 24491).
The previous daggers were "(0, -2)" and now I'm wondering about how it will still tell me "You're not very mystical..." even when I k-destroy bad items; it might determine power by adding the basic values then droping the sign. So abs(2-1)=1 while abs(0-2)=2. And enchanting the usual broken dagger +1 gives...Pow: 79. Blast. On the other hand, this is definitive proof that enchantment value matters somehow, even though that really bad cursed broken dagger was still Pow:4 like the not-cursed/only-basic-bad broken dagger. It might also be in the fact I paid a bit to enchant usual one, or in how the object was generated; that the dagger I just used was pseudo-ided as "good" instead of "average".
Oh, and I know I could learn almost all of this just by reading the code, but that's cheating!
Also, apparently the "several hours" message can mean more like "maybe two", since I entered a while into Day 11, and it's Day 11 3:25 immediately after.
In news: the Havoc Rod has poor effect even though it has a high fail-rate and sells for max, so will so follow the following; I have sold my Pesticide (cause it doesn't scale) and CCW (since I have enough healing/curing now); I now have rDisenchant without any idea where I got it (even though I ID things to keep track of what I get); nearly have vampiric; nearly died to Shuten-douji (auto-parry) at Giant's Hall (it's ok there), and a Great-Wyrm-of-Venom/Fire-Vampire combo (wait you're not just an Ancient) in the Dragon's Lair (I was just visiting! Augh!).

Well, I haven't been able to follow oook for a bit, but I'll give it a try. Better late than never, right?

Stoneskin is indeed better than Prayer. Stoneskin eventually gives +50 AC and for the Death-Sword, is a nice thing to stockpile since low AC is one of their weaknesses.
>Is it unusual for Galahad to drop the Holy Grail?
Somewhat, but it is a fixed drop for him. Many uniques (several dozen or so) have a chance of dropping a specific fixed artifact when you kill them. The odds vary from unique to unique (e.g. Sauron rarely has the One Ring while Hagen very often has his spear).
>do you know what each of the birth options at the bottom of the dump do?
Preserve Mode "preserves" artifacts that are generated on a particular level but fail to be recovered for whatever reason. Without this option, artifacts only get generated at most once, and if you miss one, then it is gone forever.
Small Levels and Unusual Rooms should be obvious. Levels are normally a certain size but Small Levels forces them to always be smaller than normal. And vaults are generally very rare, but Unusual Rooms forces every room to be a vault.
Arena Levels are generate with no walls at all, except for room boundaries. They are quite nasty, but rather uncommon. Keeping them turned off is prudent.
>For a level 33 character, it doesn't seem I've gone deep at all, does it?
No, but this is normal for Unusual Rooms.
>the quest creature is on 12, right?
Yup.

After slight work, getting distracted, and doing life stuff... Turns out that the reason this feature didn't exist was probably because it would require rewriting and testing much of the code interacting with inventory items, because that's all based on item index, needs to keep from updating the indexes until the completion of everything using them, and the same function that usually updates the index also removes inventory items-- that last is what this feature would need to do halfway through stuff using the indexes.
Now, I thought I officially gave up on this, but when I opened the game I realized I still couldn't stand taking the few dozen turns to take trips back to my house (or even just dropping some daggers if I could be sure they wouldn't vanish).
"We'll see."
Oh right, and as per my last post, I've cheated, because I skimmed the reforge_artifact code at some point.
As for the game, I had reached Angband-24 but could not find my quest target, got filled up with loot, and used Recall to leave because I expected the Angband-level Quests would work like dungeon guardian quests. They do not, Recall does not give any warning like stairs do, and this apparently knocked my fame down from 74 to 36 (automatic code search caused me to notice it's always halved on fail). The rest of my time was spent frustratingly trying to get my fame back up while avoiding looting special levels, and searching for a renewable source of fame (result hint: fame is supposed to be a limit).
During that time I burned through a lot of Speed and sources of healing, such as for doing the Cloning Pits before it's time and diving into Lonely Mountain for my second dungeon guardian (the dungeon guardian alone would've been ok, it's parents and friends were not; the dragon duo of dragonfire definition descriptions is doubtlessly deadly). Nearly died to sudden Pazuzu, but that didn't take any consumables.
I did get vampiric for a while, and it was good, but soon lost it to fighting so many higher-level things. Some gains include +1 speed, +2 AC (which actually gave more AC on the status indicator), regeneration, "heroic" device and melee skill, and eating that 50-stack of daggers enchanted to +8 for a somewhat earlier +1acc/dam, while some not-gains include over 75% resist for base elements, actually getting vorpal (whatever that is) for at least a few turns, and any fame at all for killing Malekith (automatic code search caused me to spot that it's probably just a 0-something die roll; not smoothly based on yourCL vs. creatureL like experience is).

Yes, even if some of the answers aren't quite so useful, thank you.

Sadly I have used them already, and I think one even broke. Apparently they aren't very common.

Does this stop working if you've pseudo-ided the artifact by walking over it, but have not picked it up or IDed it properly?
