Thanks for the help, though it turned out that a helpful fire demon opened up a hidden door, so there was another escape route.

The Throne Room with Vanish was seriously strange, but even stranger - no matter how I tried (including swapping in Glend, and the Mattock, and shooting arrows), the crown didn't fall off. I wore out my constitution potions trying, so decided to explore the Throne Room instead. Killed several uniques, but Glaurung decided to breathe at me when he was down to one star.
