Trying melee+evasion only. It's mostly been going well, but there was a nasty moment on 600' when I got sandwiched between a shadow and a shadow spider and had to use several healing herbs/potions while hitting stuff until I had an opportunity to move. Enough other monsters were coming that I still couldn't run away very far, but I was able to get to a chasm and jump in. I was then quickly forced to run to 750' and then false floored to 800', so I was definitely too deep for comfort for a while... but things seem to have stabilized again.

Getting momentum and using a 2.0 lb deathblade is pretty tempting...

I had Angrist on my melee/evasion run, but I think it broke on the second Sil so it took me 100 turns to get the next two out - so I can sympathise there. Hiths are an annoyance on the ascent, but Glamdring would probably have been enough to get you past them.
